Bare with me. Please.I bought something from the internet, not realising it was coming from China and would take most of my life to arrive (3 months), anyway when it eventually did, it was the wrong thing. I messaged the company and asked for a refund saying I would return it but they sent me a series of bizarre emails n return, firstly saying I couldn't return it as it would just get lost and they didn't have returns label or insurance and other nonsense and then trying to negotiate a percentage refund. First they suggested 5 % refund, which I rejected then they kept going up gradually until I ended up saying I'd accept 50% just to end all the ridiculousness. So they said 'give us 7 days to refund' (stressing that they couldn't refund postage which I was fine with) but nothing happened. After 7 days I emailed them again. Nothing. Then I emailed again. THEN they said give us 3 days to refund. Still nothing. I eventually just thought I'd raise a paypal dispute as I'm getting nowhere. They have now contacted me to say they will refund me the 50% but I need to close the paypal dispute first. Am I being an idiot or will they just not bother refunding me at all again after I close the dispute? Shouldn't they refund me first and then I shut the dispute down or is that not how it works? I just don't trust them as been so much back and forth and wierdness. They have said they will refund immediately so why tell me I have yo wait 7 days initially? Once a dispute is closed you can't open it again so I am thinking they are being tricksy. Phew. Long post. You all deserve a gin. But what to do? I just want my money back.

Do not close the dispute.

Let PayPal handle it now.

lloe7 · 02/10/2020 18:13

If you close the dispute you won't see the refund, leave it open and let PayPal sort it!

TheSandman · 02/10/2020 18:15

Don't close the dispute till you see the dosh!

Tadpolesandfroglets · 02/10/2020 18:19

I have to escalate it if I want anything done, it's now at the negotiation stage but I don't want to close it before they refund me as I know they won't.

This exact thing happened to me, I imagine it must be very common. Just escalate and let PayPal deal with it.

Wordofwarning · 02/10/2020 18:21

They won’t refund, if they’re going to play stupid games then more fool them. Let PayPal deal with it.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 02/10/2020 18:25

There last message is a load bs. They have to refund, whilst the dispute is open. Don't close it.

EasterIssland · 02/10/2020 18:27

Let PayPal handle it. They should refund you everything if it’s their fault

Brogues · 02/10/2020 18:28

Just escalate. Sounds like the chancers I had the misfortune to deal with on Amazon last month. Wrong item arrived and they kept taking a day to say they could offer me another 5% refund as a goodwill gesture and if I wanted to return the item it would cost me. Err no it’s the wrong item!

Brighterthansunflowers · 02/10/2020 18:29

Don’t be silly, let PayPal handle the dispute that’s the whole point of opening it with them. Of course they want you to close it, they have no intention of refunding you!

ChocoholicMama · 02/10/2020 18:32

Absolutely not. They want you to close the case so they don't have to do anything and you won't be able to open a new case after closing it. Not a chance will they refund you if you close it, but if you escalate to PayPal, you'll get a refund (you may have to return it with proof of postage)

CrazyToast · 02/10/2020 19:10

Escalate and tell Paypal what they are saying.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 02/10/2020 19:26

Thanks everyone.

Agree with everyone, leave it to PayPal - they usually err on the side of the buyer anyway, so will refund first and then just recover from the supplier

Pinkpepper9 · 02/10/2020 19:34

This happened to me, don’t close the dispute! Escalate the claim and PayPal will refund you

sapnupuas · 02/10/2020 20:03

I put a negative review against a tradesman on MyHammer. We agreed a 50% refund if I put my review to neutral instead. I put it to neutral and he refused to refund then money.

So, don't close the dispute!

OneForMeToo · 02/10/2020 20:10

Don’t close it. I ordered in June and then found out China so they set they delivery to September!

In august they finally messaged to say “I hope you revive item please leave feedback or let know if not get” so I messaged nope haven’t received etc etc etc. They said they would refund. Then PayPal was having issues. Then could they confirm my email and just few more days. Just kept dragging it out until I could open a dispute to finally get my refund start of October.

JonasKahnwald · 19/10/2020 18:11

I wouldn't hold out for a refund d from PayPal. I've disputed an item from China that never arrived and paypal have just denied my claim. Absolutely fucking useless.

DynamoKev · 19/10/2020 18:15

Has anyone ever got Paypal to answer an actual question? "Live" chat (what a misnomer, every reply takes hours, sometimes days) is worse than a politician at answering questions.

PatchworkElmer · 19/10/2020 18:22

You’re doing the right thing by not closing it- they’re talking absolute rubbish, they can refund whenever they like! Don’t reply again and let PayPal deal with it.
