Social distancing

Pollypocket89 · 02/10/2020 16:45

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but social distancing... At work, are you guys passing stuff to anyone or are you sticking to the 2m, put something down, move, they pick it up?

Settle an aibu for me!

First option for me. But we are seated 2 meters apart etc, and I think we’re disinfecting our hands about 1 billion times a day Grin

Pollypocket89 · 02/10/2020 16:51

You can reach 2m?

@Pollypocket89

You can reach 2m?
OP if you are 2m away from someone and want to hand them something you don't need to be able to reach 2m.

Have a think about it.

Pollypocket89 · 02/10/2020 17:02

No need to be condescending! We have 2m spots at work and if myself and my colleague both reach out we still couldn't reach to pass one another something

Toothsil · 02/10/2020 17:07

I remember my primary school teacher saying if she stretched both arms out, that was around a metre, so you'd struggle to reach 2m even with 2 people passing to each other I would think!

Pollypocket89 · 02/10/2020 17:08

Thank you lol

Pollypocket89 · 02/10/2020 17:13

My focus was more on the would you stand closer than 2m and pass someone something?

OP posts:
charleyfarleysaunt · 02/10/2020 17:17

I remember being told by my grandmother that in the east end a measure for a yard (approx 1 metre) was nose to outstretched fingers - and sometimes sellers would turn their nose to shorten the measure in their favour... all very apocryphal

But - I just held a tape measure to my nose and at my fingertips it was 37 inches, 94 cm (I'm 5 foot 6)

So basically with arms outstretched, passing pretty much complies with the 2 metre rule doesn't it?

Pollypocket89 · 02/10/2020 17:21

But would you stand closer and do it?

OP posts:
Pollypocket89 · 02/10/2020 17:23

Essentially, one of my colleagues used another colleagues lanyard today as they were going off site and stood closer than 2m and passed it back and forth, hands touching and no sanitiser

I picked up someone's glasses yesterday, she had been in front of me in the co-op, older lady hadn't noticed she'd dropped them. I didn't even think about not picking them up and handing them to her. Then had a thought, maybe I shouldn't have? Anyway what I mean is it's instinctive... as to a work situ then yes, I would and have briefly broken the 2m rule to pass things on. (And not then furiously sanitised).

quarentini · 02/10/2020 17:38

I'm a chef and social distancing isn't an option

roarfeckingroarr · 02/10/2020 18:05

You're upset about this OP?

Pollypocket89 · 02/10/2020 18:12

I'm not upset lol a 3rd colleague wasnt happy. She said what's the point of social distancing if you're taking something that you've had round your neck and breathing over and giving it to someone else touching their hands

OP posts:
Ponoka7 · 02/10/2020 18:17

I think people need reminding that it doesn't enter our bodies via our hands. The hands have to touch our face. If everyone is maintaining hygiene then a very occasional happening like that, isn't going to transmit it. But it should be avoided.

BusyBB · 02/10/2020 18:19

@Toothsil arms outstretched distance is meant to be the same as you height, so 1metre in primary school but probably more now!!

Pollypocket89 · 02/10/2020 18:19

At work we keep being told 2m, 2m, 2m so I think 3rd colleague is coming from that angle. They didn't sanitise either. We shouldn't be sharing things was her point

OP posts:
slashlover · 02/10/2020 18:46

At my work we share pens, keyboards etc. (retail).

Fiddlersgreen · 02/10/2020 18:54

I work in retail, a small independent store.
We cannot social distance. Our two computers/tills are at a distance of around half a metre from each other

Pollypocket89 · 02/10/2020 19:15

If you don't have a choice, I get it. But I didn't think we were supposed to share something, especially from around someone's neck... I don't think I'd do it

OP posts:
pincertoe · 02/10/2020 19:20

Yes we pass things at less than two meters. Occasionally stand next to someone to look at comp - very shirt periods though and sometimes wear masks (colleague kept his on today when he came to help me in my office). We do sanitise a lot but i know I could sanitise more.

lanbro · 02/10/2020 19:29

I can't feasibly social distance from my work colleagues...coffeeshop with small space behind counter and small kitchen. There are only 3 of us,only 2 working at a time, and we trust each other to be sensible. I need to keep my business going so it is what it is!

Laureline · 02/10/2020 23:23

@Pollypocket89

You can reach 2m?
Well, I do get up from time to time to talk to my team, or they come over to talk to me or ask me to sign papers etc. I’m pretty sure we’re then at less than 2 meters. Hence my remark about washing our hands a lot with gel.
