To think I’ve been had..

I’ve just bought myself some cheap gold plated jewellery.

It’s allegedly nickel free stainless steel plated in gold and they reckon it’s never going to rub off or tarnish or fade and I can apparently wear it everyday, go swimming etc.

But I’ve just been reading some reviews, a lot saying the ‘stainless steel’ rings have left green marks (so obviously contain copper and are not stainless steel)

And now I’m thinking I’ve been conned.
It wasn’t too expensive thankfully but I have a nickel allergy, I know that gold plated items sometimes contain nickel and if they’ve lied about the rings I bet they’ve lied about what I’ve bought aswell!

plate can wear off, it's only thin, where did you purchase it ?

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 02/10/2020 13:53

The trick is to read the reviews before you purchase 😁

dh, ex jewellery maker for corocraft, says that gold plate can last about 2 years if cared for properly but this sounds like you've been done over.

I know, I wear a gold plated ring that is now silver.
I just assumed that maybe there was a new playing technique now that meant it wouldn’t (as the manufacturer claims it won’t fade, wear etc)

I got it off a seller I’ve never used before on Etsy.
I buy all my (Sterling silver) jewellery on Etsy and always been really pleased but fancied some gold and thought I’d give this seller a go.
Wishing I hadn’t now!

i'd buy through a shop tbh but that's just me.

We had a lovely small independent I used to use but they’ve since gone out of business leaving me only with the big names; H Samuel, F Hinds etc.

They are way overpriced imo, I prefer small jewellery businesses on Etsy.

All the Sterling silver jewellery I’ve bought from Etsy sellers has been hallmarked and good quality.
I wear my jewellery constantly every day and have pieces that must be at least 6 years old now.

I’ve never used the gold seller I used today before and probably won’t again.

If you’ve only just ordered can’t you cancel? Or return the items once you receive them?

Swimminginroses · 02/10/2020 15:35

I’m not sure that I can cancel, but I am pretty sure I can send back because it’s an online sale.
I’m fairly sure you have 14 days for online purchases
