To think that Costco just isn't that cheap?

I know you can buy stuff there you can't get elsewhere, but with the rise of shops like Home Bargains and B and M, a lot of the items just don't seem that cheap anymore...I usually come out with next to nothing.

DebbieFiderer · 02/10/2020 12:20

It's not cheap, but I think it's often better value, so more expensive but for better quality. Plus I like buying in bulk.

Thehop · 02/10/2020 12:21

Sometimes worth going but I never go and browse.

My DJ hates going with me because I price check online to prove it’s a bad buy 😂

Thehop · 02/10/2020 12:21

The ice cream though 😍

Sirzy · 02/10/2020 12:22

I always check prices before buying but often it does work out cheaper

Timeforanotherusername · 02/10/2020 12:23

It depends whether you prioritise price over quality!

We buy a lot from Costco- things where we prefer brand names or their own brand.

For us it's not about cheapness.

Shelby30 · 02/10/2020 12:24

I agree mainly with food and toiletries etc. I've found the toys cheaper though like something that is £35 elsewhere £25 at Costco. The birthday cakes are fab value too but I'm not paying £30+ membership for it. Last time I had membership we went twice in a year and hardly bought anything.

Oblomov20 · 02/10/2020 12:28

It's not about price. It's about quality. We've been members for 20 years. We spend a lot. When I go, we can't get out the doors for less than £200-£300.
But the fresh meat quality is good. We happily buy their frozen ribs, burgers, chicken burgers & kievs.

thenightsky · 02/10/2020 12:28

The quality is good though, much better than B&M etc. We used to go quite a lot as we had to pass the door on the way to my parents, plus we'd shop for them too. Since they passed away we've not bothered renewing our cards.

BigBadVoodooHat · 02/10/2020 12:29

I honestly think it's much better value. Some things can be bought for a similar price elsewhere, but I honestly can't see how things like trays of tinned tomatoes for £3.79 or a 16kg sack of rice £8-ish is better value in standard food shops.

Are you looking at the ticket price of things, or taking account of the cost by weight/unit?

LeSquigh · 02/10/2020 13:50

Another one who says it’s about quality rather than price. Costco quality is EXCELLENT in so many things, meat especially. Things like cans of drink/bottled water is much cheaper than anywhere else and mine has a petrol station so it’s worth the membership fee alone.

This.

I do laugh at Tesco price matching Aldi when that was never the point to me - Aldi and Lidl produce is so often superior in flavour and quality.

And I love me a bulk buy. If you can afford it, why go shopping more often than you need to?

JuiceyBetty · 02/10/2020 13:55

I always make big savings but I mainly go cos I LOVE the food! Such good quality

LGY1 · 02/10/2020 13:55

It’s so much cheaper for Catsan litter & cat biscuits but I see what you are saving about a few food items.
I never find the toiletries a good deal when you can always pick shower gel etc up for £1

Yesterdayforgotten · 02/10/2020 14:00

You can pick up some good deals when they have their offers on and some great prices on toys, tree ornament for Christmas etc. Overall though on a normal basis they can be expensive and alot dearer than they were afew years ago. We are finding we can get similar or the same products online or in other shops cheaper and aren't paying for a membership for those places. We joke that our local costco has increased their prices to pay for their petrol station. Their quality has gone down hill on a lot of things esp the meat and baked goods recently as well and isn't what it once was.

IsThisNameTaken · 02/10/2020 14:04

Vast majority of the time it's cheaper - and the own brand quality is so much better than supermarkets.
I make my membership back in cat litter alone! Oh, and Nando's gift vouchers.

Picklypickles · 02/10/2020 14:06

I have no idea, I've never seen a Costco, is it like B&M?!

BarbaraofSeville · 02/10/2020 14:07

Some things are cheap, others are similar price for very good quality. Some things are no better quality and more expensive. You do have to be careful.

We buy catfood and litter, toilet roll, ciabattas, screenwash and deicer, Lavazza coffee, mouthwash, sometimes dishwasher tablets, cereal bars, paneer, some alcohol, sometimes books, which are generally the cheapest available for the brands/types we like.

Yesterdayforgotten · 02/10/2020 14:08

@picklypickles no it's a large spacious american warehouse with bulk buy products and charges an annual membership.

Picklypickles · 02/10/2020 14:08

I'm in Devon, apparently my nearest Costco is in Cardiff, how bloody unfair!

Yesterdayforgotten · 02/10/2020 14:10

I do agree with a pp on the books, they really are fantastic deals and you can get some unique items and lovely gifts for people esp at Christmas.

ShivD · 02/10/2020 14:11

I agree in the main, the fruit isn’t any better than supermarkets and more expensive e.g. Lidl sell Driscoll berries for much cheaper.

You do get the odd bargain and the Kirkland kitchen roll and toilet roll are fab especially if you have a garage to store the spares in. We’re a family of 7 so the larger pack of things are good for us especially for kids packed lunches when they have offers on.

This has reminded me that I need to renew my membership.

Yesterdayforgotten · 02/10/2020 14:12

Oh no pickles; it's probably for the best as the place is too bloody tempting. Me and dh tried not to rejoin and have blooming joined again even though we know going in there is fatal and we end up moaning about the prices of some of it!

ShivD · 02/10/2020 14:12

I have my online shopping app open to check the deals when I’m there Blush

AndyMurraysCat · 02/10/2020 14:13

Your nearest one is in Bristol so not that far

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 02/10/2020 14:14

I've bought plenty of good value items such as Shark Vacuum, Oscillating heater and tall Tower Fan but what I really like is the 5-year guarantee on TVs and laptops.

I do think their meats are expensive but the quality is superb. I love their carrot cake and all their cakes are really good value as are books.
