To tell you, you don’t need a separate app to scan a QR code if you have an iPhone

All you need to do is open your camera and point it at the code. It will take you to the site.

I only know this because school sent home two pages of codes for learning songs for dc. I was downloading all the different QR code apps go find there were hidden costs!

A quick google showed me that I didn’t need a separate app, thank god!

So for those who have an iPhone (not sure about android, sorry), just open your camera. Don’t worry about a fancy app

Yes androids have had this for a few years too.

AmayaBuzzbee · 02/10/2020 06:34

I had no idea- thank you!

BarbaraofSeville · 02/10/2020 07:13

Same for Androids and all smartphones I assume. You don't even need to take a picture you just point your camera app at it and it all happens automagically.

I only learned this when I went out for lunch a few weeks ago and I was doing my middle aged luddite squinting at the instructions trying to work out WTF I was supposed to do and fiddling with my phone when the restaurant greeter lady swooped in and rushed my through it all with the resignation of someone used to this situation all the time.

OldEvilOwl · 02/10/2020 08:05

Didn't know this either thank you Smile

Bump up for those who didn’t know

Ah great thanks. Didn’t know that!

im5050 · 02/10/2020 10:48

It’s basically the same as my fitness pal App 😂 when you point your camera at the bar code it tells you what the product is

AgentProvocateur · 02/10/2020 11:02

I didn’t know you could even get an app. I’ve always used the camera 😂

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/10/2020 11:09

Older phones need an app. Newer phones don't.

In the same way as newer phones can run the "NHS" Track and Trace, older ones can't.

BananaHammock23 · 02/10/2020 11:10

I only found this out recently since lots of menus are accessed via QR in restaurants. Such a handy tool!

IwishIwasyoda · 02/10/2020 11:14

I only found this out today despite having an iPhone for years! I never really found the need to use QR codes previously (when you did need an app) and was googling the very thing about 8am this morning

DilysPrice · 02/10/2020 11:15

This is true in general, and a very handy thing to know, but it doesn’t apply to the NHS Covid app QR codes. Your camera won’t read them unless you have the app.
I have an iPhone 6. If I go to a pub which wants me to login in their website and order from my table online, I can just point my camera at the QR code and it will take me to their website to do all that.

But if I point my camera at their NHS QR code it just gives me an error message.

Mamadothehump · 02/10/2020 11:44

Also came on to say it doesn't work with the COVID app.

DappledThings · 02/10/2020 12:38

My Android doesn't do this. It's really annoying. Was in M&S cafe the other day. The NHS app didn't recognise their QR code. Pointing my camera at it did nothing. They had no non-electronic method of recording my details. All somewhat pointless really.

Phone is only about 18 months old. Galaxy 8 (I think)

GreyBow · 02/10/2020 12:42

A restaurant told me that the other week. I had had no clue up to then and was still opening an app I'd downloaded years ago abs just transferred to all new phones.

SageRosemary · 02/10/2020 12:56

I gained some "cool Mum" points with my teen DC just recently when I just took a photo of some QR code with my old iPhone and went straight to a webpage, they were just starting to call out a complicated http-blahdiblah-987654321digitcombinationwithaddedrandom!@#$%^&*()_+symbols to me.

Plussizejumpsuit · 02/10/2020 13:16

Same for android
