AIBU to call my colleagues out on constantly spelling my name wrong?

I started a new job about 8 weeks ago. Certain team members spell my name wrong on every email, despite it being in the email address, on rotas, telephone lists etc. I'm finding it a little rude and careless to be honest.

Think Tracey/Tracy, Clare/Claire... but with more than one letter difference, more Sean/Shaun.

AIBU to call them out on it, and how do I tell them?

This happened to be in an old job, wouldn't have minded if it was every now and then, but it was literally written on the email they were replying to in a lot of cases. I would mention it, it's disrespectful.

passthepesto · 01/10/2020 21:14

This happens to me frequently. I used to get annoyed and now I have decided to ignore it because they are clearly just thick

toomanyspiderplants · 01/10/2020 21:17

Yes this happens to me all the time first and middle name. tbh I think you have to ignore it..its going to happen your whole life.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/10/2020 21:17

If by “call out” you mean ask them to please try and remember, then go for it. It’s a ridiculous expression.

Same has always happened to me and I couldn’t care less.

museumum · 01/10/2020 21:21

I have a name with many spellings like Katherine Catherine Katharine but more options. I always say to people that I don’t care if they spell it wrong but it’s important they know how to spell it for email.
It honestly doesn’t bother me unless they send emails that don’t get to me.

Heronwatcher · 01/10/2020 21:21

Do you think they’re doing it deliberately or is it just a spellcheck thing? If you politely remind them then this should suffice surely- maybe you could change the colour of your name in your email signature or increase the font? Unless you think it’s veiled racism or deliberate I wouldn’t get worked up about it myself.

dudsville · 01/10/2020 21:24

Names are so important, but getting them wrong is often just a mistake. I have a very popular name, people love it, but they still often misspell my surname. If it was mutt first name, honestly I'd correct it though.

AiryFairyMum · 01/10/2020 21:25

This is why I wince when people call their kids names with unusual or difficult spellings.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 01/10/2020 21:25

I’m one of the myriad versions of Catherine (not that version...), and have never been worried when I get presented with yet a different version of my name.

I did, however, get stroppy with somebody on the phone who insisted that it was me who’d given the entirely wrong spelling of my name. Oddly, I do know how to spell it.

Oh how annoying OP I've had this just last week I sent a few emails to someone on a different team signed from me - Lorraine (not my name but similar) and they kept responding with 'Hi Natasha'..... wtf

gretagreengrapes · 01/10/2020 21:27

@museumum Catherine/Kathryn is a good example of how different the spelling is. The same name with a completely different spelling.

It hasn't happened at any job previously. And I haven't been able to receive one important email because they couldn't find their spelling in the address book.
I do just find it careless, they will reply to an email I have sent and written my name on with the wrong spelling.

Of course if I brought it up I'd be polite! I'm just not sure what's the best thing to say.

I feel like you are a Lynsey. So many spellings. So many many spellings. We actually have a male and a female Lindsay and Lindsey with the same surname. One is the regional senior partner and the other is a marketing manager. They are not related. Gets embarrassing if people email the wrong one!
Dahlietta · 01/10/2020 21:29

Happens all the time to people with perfectly common names. From experience, this has plagued colleagues whose names were Clare, Iain, Rachel, Anne and Steven. I wouldn't call any of those unusual or difficult. Not to mention the fact that not spelling someone's name correctly when it's right in front of you is rude whatever their name is.

gretagreengrapes · 01/10/2020 21:29

@AiryFairyMum Me too! But I promise it is a normal variation of the name!

@Owlypants That is perfect!

It monumentally pisses me off when people spell my name wrong. It's just fucking rude.

It's right there, in my signature, in my email address and on the bottom of my emails. It's not hard.

I’d say something. Just to clarify for future emails my name is spelled x not y. I wouldn’t normally be so pedantic but I’m worried I’ll miss out on important emails.

Battlestaricedcoffee · 01/10/2020 21:33

I have a different role in same org and now work with someone in partner org called Carol with no e. I previously shared an office with somone called Carole with an e. Every time I write Carol I think about whether it needs an e. It's really not that hard to remember. Say something it's plain lazy of them.

WitsEnding · 01/10/2020 21:34

I was once called out on this by a Tracy, and accepted my mistake - but did point out she was doing the same to me. I did better than the colleague who spelt her name correctly but accidentally called her Sharon to her face, several times!

MrsToothyBitch · 01/10/2020 21:34

Call them out on it. My boss can't spell my name and (mercifully got my first name right that day) got my surname wrong setting up my work email address. I was too embarrassed/new to say at the time and it's been too long now. Blush I'd look a fool.

Boss complicates my first name- think Annabel/Annabelle type error and then dropped a doubled letter out of my surname on my email. So he thinks "Annabel Elliot" is Annabelle Eliot.

TheRIDs · 01/10/2020 21:37

My boss still misspells my name and we’ve worked together for two years. Drives me quietly potty, but how do you politely say STOP fucking getting my name wrong?!

Oldbutstillgotit · 01/10/2020 21:37

I had a colleague called Ann. Our then manager insisted on writing Anne despite Ann reminding her ( politely ) that she is Ann. No change.
Anyway there was a large conference and Ann was delivering a presentation.
Her first slide introduced the Topic and underneath she had Ann ( NO E ) Surname !
When people laughed she said that some people seemed to have a problem and stared at our manager .
Strangely she got it right after that !

HoldMyLobster · 01/10/2020 21:39

I recently apologized to a colleague for spelling her name wrong. She has the same name as my sister but spelled differently, and muscle memory means I automatically spell it my sister's way.

She replied saying it was no problem and that she was used to our other team member always spelling her name wrong.

In doing so she spelled the other team member's wrong.

user1490216514 · 01/10/2020 21:40

I actually laughed at classic Corrie this week when Emily asked Tracy if she didn’t have an E in her name

I have a name that doesn’t have a vowel. One person always spells it wrong because his daughter has that name. I made a mistake telling close work friends i don’t like it, they do it when trying to wind me up. I can live with this

What really annoys me is random colleagues, usually after some info or me to do something for them, track me down my e-mail then start the messages with the incorrect spelling!

I have been known to be so petty as incorrectly spell their name back to them

andadietcoke · 01/10/2020 21:40

I've given up. I work in an office with 80% non British staff and the version they use is more familiar outside the UK. Email is first initial_surname so doesn't cause any issues. It does grate a bit especially when they're replying to an email I've sent.
