Suspected hip dysplasia - is 6 weeks too long to wait for an ultrasound?

DD has just had her 8 week check and has been referred for an ultrasound to check for hip dysplasia as her leg creases don't match up. This will apparently take 6 weeks. I've read that the earlier the harness is used for babies with HD the more effective it is - does this seem too long to wait? Considering seeing if we can get a private US, we don't have a huge amount of money but if the consequences of waiting could be surgery etc I think we'd have to find it.

Also, has anyone's baby been referred at the same age and been fine? No idea how likely it is that DD does actually have HD. I know it's usually very treatable if caught early but feel very anxious.

I was under the impression that's is best identified before walking or weight bearing (months and months away). So yes, younger the better but your dd is one where it HAS been picked up early.

My DD's wasn't identified until 12 weeks, she then wore the harness for 12 weeks. All resolved and no issues now (4 years later)

My son was referred at 6 weeks for the same reason - creases not matching up. Also I think the GP heard a clicking sound in his hip as she moved them.

He was absolutely fine. The physio told me that 99% of babies who are referred by GPs are fine. They can lay down fat unevenly, and that can be totally normal.

I remember my son’s referral went awry and I got a panicked call from the hospital one morning asking me to come in that afternoon because they had to see him before a certain point under their own referral protocol. Unfortunately I can’t remember what that point was, but I’m sure it was before 14 weeks. Could you try ringing the clicky hip clinic at the hospital?

Thanks all, that's all very reassuring. Phoning the hospital is a great idea, thank you!

My daughter had a loud clicky hip and uneven creases.i was very worried. They monitored her and did scans etc and it sorted itself out without any treatment

DD had ultrasound at 6 weeks, the harness went on that day, and came off at 6 months. I was surprised she needed it so long. A friends DD was referred as a toddler so it was more stressful.

Just read this thread, my eldest DD wasn’t diagnosed until 13mths as having CDH and there followed a year of surgeries and plaster casts. My next DD was scanned at 6 wks and only had a few months in the plastic brace.
If you have any concerns please push for an ultrasound/x-ray as my eldest DD is now 26 and on the waiting list for a Ganz Osteotomy, her current consultant has voiced concerns at how late it was picked up as a baby 😕
