We found a backpack belonging to a girl in my daughters class on the pavement and took it home for safekeeping until the next day. We let the mum know we had found it. There was a lunchbox in there too (we had to look in the bag to see if there was a name in there). Should I empty the lunchbox of all the rubbish or just give the bag back as we found it. Not sure how the mum would feel ?

Assuming it’s going back to school today, I’d just return it as is. If it was over a weekend or at the start of the holidays in hot weather, clean it.
