Friend spent this much on a light!,

Have a great friend who is renound for being a bit stingy! Other than that is lovely, but it’s a bit of a running joke that she usually gets out of paying for things. If we go out for lunch she just has a drink, or maybe a starter, takes her own coffee to coffee shops etc!

Was shocked the other day when she said she’d just spent £6000 on a light! I nearly fell over!

Obvs none of my business but made me chuckle....

Meanwhile there is another thread where a single person is going to spend £525000 on a pointlessly big house but no one bats an eye lid at that I remember when houses were a couple thousand

I know, Longdistance. I was bloody angry but at the same time, embarrassed for her, as it was such an unnecessary, mean spirited thing to do. I didn't say anything as I didnt want to put her in a position where, against the evidence, she'd feel compelled to deny it. But, well, awful behaviour. Friendship rapidly cooled.

@FjordFiestas

Her life. Her money. Leave her alone. This woman chooses not to squander her money on things that won't exist in five minutes time and instead spend it on something she'll enjoy every single day for years and the drama police on here are saying how awful she is. Would I spend that much money on a light? No. But, equally, I wouldn't spend money on half the shite many women on here do all the time and get praised for.

Hello, OP's friend! Grin

It's not a high-minded choice when you use your friends to disguise your stinginess. If you're taking a seat in a coffee shop, bringing your own coffee is a shitty thing to do. And in the current economic climate, if you do that and can afford to drop 6k on something like this, you ought to be brought up sharp by those 'friends'.

My db/DSIL saw a light they fell in love with in a high end boutique shop in Edinburgh, the price tag was £2,500. They spoke to owner who gave them the big sell, hand made by artists in France etc etc, they negotiated down to £1,700, but said they'd go away and think about it first.

They found the exact same light online for £800. While looking on the site, which was monitoring their views, it went on sale for £600, then next day £450, then they got a pop up saying final price £350 😱 if they buy in next 15 min, so on impulse they bought their hand made in France light, delighted with their bargain.

Couple of weeks later they got a letter to say it was stuck in customs from China 🤣🤣🤣 They still love it, but it just shows you it pays to research and shop around.

£6k is ridiculous and probably from China too!!!!

£6k! Bloody hell. I’m still trying to justify the price of this to myself, I’ve seen it reduced to £199 before so if they reduce it again I might take the plunge

My nana: won't call me on my mobile phone, even with the assurance that I can call her straight back because of the cost.... and spends £8000 on a (very small) shed.

‘Takes her own coffee to the coffee shop’

That’s a shitty thing to do and I wouldn’t stay friends with someone who thought that was remotely acceptable behaviour. After all, it’s not that she’s on the bones of her arse but deliberately choosing to treat the coffee shop owner with such disdain.

Inhave a similar friend. I stopped going for coffee with her when I saw her surreptitiously pocket the tip I'd left for the waitress. Not on. Not at all.

Except that doesn’t sound like OP’s ‘friend’ at all. (just like Fiona doesn’t)

I was wondering if it were hand blown Venetian glass. How awesome to have such a work of art in your house

20 years ago I used to work in a lighting shop. Even back then it was very possible to spend 6k on a light.

@Sniv

I have just looked at various shops and I can't actually find a light for £6000 - not even a chandelier (This may also be the first time I have used 'sort by price: high to low' in my life). It must be some hand crafted one-of-a-kind thing?

Check out this beauty for a mere £3600 at John Lewis, though. It better be twice as nice as this.

That light is how much Hmm??
I reminds me of some ancient ugly thing my Grandfather had in his garden shed. Grin

Got to agree here. If every one took their own coffee to a coffee shop the owners wouldn't make any profit. The only exception would be food or drink for very small children. I do sometimes buy and eat one of their own sandwiches bought in the Food Hall in an M&S cafe because at the moment their selection in the cafe is not good but I make up for it by behaving an extra coffee and a pastry even though I really shouldn't

Anyone taking their own coffee etc to an establishment should be asked to leave. That's not being frugal or watching their money, it's being a rude fucker.

Report
Porridgeoat · 01/10/2020 05:08

she is out there, accepting drinks and eating food she didn’t pay for. Putting her friends at a disadvantage when she clearly doesn’t need to.

^
But this is not what’s happening. There’s a massive difference between being generally tight with expenditure and using friends cash for your own means. The first doesn’t rely on friends finances, the second does.

Is her name Lizzie? I knew a Lizzie who would wait till she was the last person to pay her share of the bill, then say quietly to the waiter 'put the rest on my card' which meant the tips other people put in paid for her food rather than being the tip

I need to see this light. Is it actually possible to pay £6k for a light!?!?

No word of a lie, and this is outing except I doubt she goes on here but my friend paid €13,OOO euros for one.

How do I know? I was with her in Venice and they ordered one to be hand made in Murano glass and shipped back home,

It was a huge ornate glass one with lots of tiers and drops and hangs proudly from their ceiling over their minstrel gallery.
