Have a great friend who is renound for being a bit stingy! Other than that is lovely, but it’s a bit of a running joke that she usually gets out of paying for things. If we go out for lunch she just has a drink, or maybe a starter, takes her own coffee to coffee shops etc!

Was shocked the other day when she said she’d just spent £6000 on a light! I nearly fell over!

Obvs none of my business but made me chuckle....

This Light?

It is £6,000!

@Sniv

I have just looked at various shops and I can't actually find a light for £6000 - not even a chandelier (This may also be the first time I have used 'sort by price: high to low' in my life). It must be some hand crafted one-of-a-kind thing?

Check out this beauty for a mere £3600 at John Lewis, though. It better be twice as nice as this.

Good grief...and it isn't even harmonious to look at.
Absurd.

Misers like this are funny as fook.
They are so tight. Kids wearing scruffy clothes just so they can drive round in a range rover

I worked on a project a while ago where the interior designer was paid as a percentage of the fixtures and fittings she selected. Saw some very expensive lighting there!

I can well imagine.
I tried to get an Interior Designer to give me ideas for my house, I wanted to pay for a couple hours work on a consultancy basis, not have them buy stuff and sell it on to me.
None of them were interested the first question was how much do you want to spend? They all seemed to want to work on a commission type basis.

@custardbear

Is her name Lizzie? I knew a Lizzie who would wait till she was the last person to pay her share of the bill, then say quietly to the waiter 'put the rest on my card' which meant the tips other people put in paid for her food rather than being the tip

That happened to us, a group of ten usually, took us ages to clock on that the cash we paid plus a hefty tip went awol when this guy paid the bill. He would drink two bottles of red then order double brandies you know the rest. When we did clock we left our tip on the table for the staff.

The Coffee shop would be well within their rights to say "No food or drink from outside to be consumed on the premises" I'm sure it could be worded better.

It's quite cheeky to take up a seat, use the loo, enjoy with warmth of a cafe without purchasing anything.
The Cafe possibly let it go as they need the friends business or are worried she has some sort of diet allergy and are being polite.
@SarahAndQuack "If she were on her own, the coffee shop would kick her out as it'd be obvious she wasn't a customer."
The difference is that she ISN'T on her own. She's ONLY going to the coffee shop to see these friends. What other option does she have? She shouldn't be forced to waste her money on something she doesn't want and she shouldn't be forcing her friends to all sit on a park bench with her (like she'd be happy to). If she were on her own, she'd be costing the business money as they'd need to clean the tables etc but as part of a paying group (even if she, as an individual isn't purchasing anything) she's not costing the business anything at all.
Fine but if she doesn’t want to drink the establishment’s coffee she shouldn’t expect to be allowed to take her own coffee in.

Well, precisely.

She isn't on her own.

She's sponging off her friends.

Fairly obviously (hello 6k light), her other option is to pay for her coffee like everyone else, isn't it?

It's particularly cheap and shitty of her if she's still doing this at the moment, when a lot of cafes are going to go out of business.

@LongPauseNoAnswer

So many people haven’t actually read the OP. She’s not a sponger, she’s just tight in some areas and splurges in others!

She kind of is sponging, though, isn't she? If she were on her own, the coffee shop would kick her out as it'd be obvious she wasn't a customer.

I'd actually feel more uncomfortable with a friend doing this than with them expecting me to pay for their coffee, but both are kinds of sponging off other people, because in both cases you're expecting someone else to spend money so you don't need to bother.

If she were just frugal, she'd surely suggest everyone meet in the park with a thermos, or everyone come to hers/theirs for coffee.

If she isn't sponging off others, but not wasting spending money on the same stuff as you, leave her alone.

Is she going to swing from the chandelier?

Not when it cost six fucking grand, I hope

I would see a 6k light fitting as a total waste of money unless it was a spectacular feature in a statement house, that really added value.
I would consider spending that on Art, especially if I felt it had a chance of appreciating.
Cant stand tight arses though and lost a "friend" who I had subsidised for years (kids clothing/fixing car etc) when she announced she had booked a £10k family holiday to Thailand.Hmm

Of course it’s her money, but I think anyone with a friend like that would be bemused by this! As sensible as it’s sounds 🙄 to not buy things that won’t exist in half an hour you’re usually paying for the experience not the product, a catch up with your friends or if you pay to do an activity such as zip lining, it doesn’t last long but the experience will last you a lifetime!

Most tight arses I know have loads of money. We have a relative that cried poverty for years, making us all pay for stuff because we thought she was broke. She used to cry when to came to paying the bill.

Then she bought herself a villa on the Mediterranean.

SuzieQQQ · 01/10/2020 06:42

A typical shame faced tight arse! The reason she can afford a 6000 pound light is because she is happy to sponge of others and never contribute appropriately to presents, food, drink etc. I hate these type of people.

I need to see this light. Is it actually possible to pay £6k for a light!?!?

No word of a lie, and this is outing except I doubt she goes on here but my friend paid €13,OOO euros for one.

How do I know? I was with her in Venice and they ordered one to be hand made in Murano glass and shipped back home,

It was a huge ornate glass one with lots of tiers and drops and hangs proudly from their ceiling over their minstrel gallery.
