To reuse hot water bottle water?

Not to be tight or even conscious of anything environmentally....

I've got bad cramps. I made a hot water bottle earlier which has since gone cold. I'm off to bed now so I want to refresh it.

Ive poured the content of the hot water bottle back into the (empty) kettle, reboiled it, and put it back in the hot water bottle.

Is that grim?

I used to do that but I then read something about the rubber from the hot water bottle contaminating the water with something (?!) and that you shouldn’t really be putting that into something that you essentially drink out of (tea, cooking water etc from the kettle) Sorry I’m not sure that makes sense but the short version is that you shouldn’t! Confused

Mysa74 · 29/09/2020 20:33

I wouldn't myself, mainly because it might make your next hot drink taste rubbery...

katy1213 · 29/09/2020 20:34

Odd and I wouldn't fancy the next cup of tea from the kettle. Why not just fill it from the tap?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/09/2020 20:37

Why not just fill it from the tap?

The hot water bottle? Because it wouldn't be hot enough.

Why?

Jellykat · 29/09/2020 20:38

That is why not fill the kettle from the tap?? bizarre

SaltyAndFresh · 29/09/2020 20:39

Ick Hot water bottle water stinks. Why put that in your kettle?

pinkbalconyrailing · 29/09/2020 20:39

I wouldn't but I collect the water for my house plants.

WhoUsedMyName · 29/09/2020 20:40

Just abit odd if not for saving water etc then what was the benefit?

SallySolardel · 29/09/2020 20:40

I did it once. My next drink tasted so rubbery I've been put off it for life

DobbyTheHouseElk · 29/09/2020 20:41

I fill the kettle with hot tap water. It uses a whole kettle to fill the bottle so I refill with cold after. Boils faster.

MJMG2015 · 29/09/2020 20:42

No

You need to wash your kettle out properly now. (Wasting way more water than just using fresh water)

However WTAF did you do it?

user1467300911 · 29/09/2020 20:45

Using the same kettle as for hot drinks may make you hot drinks taste rubbery! We used a spare camping kettle just for hot water bottle water one winter when we lived without central heating.

JustGetThroughTheDay · 29/09/2020 20:56

Can you water plants with the hot water bottle water instead?

Biancadelrioisback · 29/09/2020 21:00

Oh god I did this all the time when I was younger!

Rarely used the kettle for much else other than hot water bottles and instant noodles.

Haven't done it in ages but I hate throwing away all that water!

Kittytheteapot · 29/09/2020 21:00

Blimey. How much water are you wasting really if you just poured the cold water from the hot water bottle down the drain and started afresh with water from the tap going into the kettle? I agree with others that I would not want to make a drink from a kettle that has had rubber-tainted water poured into it previously.

RefriedBeanz · 29/09/2020 21:01

I wouldn’t put it in the kettle but I do use it for the plants

WunWun · 29/09/2020 21:02

This is so weird! Why?

StarLines · 29/09/2020 21:03

I did once when our water went off on a miserable day. Huge mistake as all my drinks tasted weird once I could use it again.

WildCherryBlossom · 29/09/2020 21:04

I pour the water from hot water bottles into the plant pots outside my house. Same with the water bottles the children take to school: emptied onto plant pots and refreshed in the morning before school.

user127819 · 29/09/2020 21:04

I do this but I have a kettle in my bedroom just for hot water bottles. I never use it for food or drink. I wouldn't suggest reboiling water more than once, twice at a push because sometimes it overboils if it's been boiled too many times. I wouldn't do it with cold water though, I don't see the point. I do it when the water is still warm but not hot enough to help with the pain/cold.

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/09/2020 21:04

What about the water you've boiled eggs in? The old wives tale was that if you used that for anything you'd get warts, so I've always thrown that away. Still get warts though.

MattBerrysHair · 29/09/2020 21:06

I bet the inside of hotwater bottles is black with mildew Envy

I use the water for house plants or the pots outside. If nothing needs watering at that moment I put it in a watering can for another day.

winterchills · 29/09/2020 21:06

I don't understand why you would do that and surely now your drinks will taste rubbery

Genuine question: what does "overboils" mean here?
