To reuse hot water bottle water?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/09/2020 20:30

Not to be tight or even conscious of anything environmentally....

I've got bad cramps. I made a hot water bottle earlier which has since gone cold. I'm off to bed now so I want to refresh it.

Ive poured the content of the hot water bottle back into the (empty) kettle, reboiled it, and put it back in the hot water bottle.

Is that grim?

I always just use water from the hot tap for hot water bottles. I think it says on the rim not to use boiling water.

thriftyhen · 29/09/2020 21:08

I use the water from the hot water bottle to fill the loo cistern. I don't think I'd put it back in the kettle in case it left a rubbery taste!

Genuine question: what does "overboils" mean here?

It froths up when it reaches boiling point, and spills out the kettle.

sqirrelfriends · 29/09/2020 21:10

This reminds me of the time I stupidly boiled eggs in my kettle (I was a student and lazy). Eggy tea for days Envy

Speckledhen617 · 29/09/2020 21:13

I do this all the time but I've got a designated kettle for hot water bottles on my bedside table (its our old kettle that had limescale build up). Its a game changer in the winter, if I'm having a lie in I can make myself a new hot bottle without leaving my bed.

Pinkshrimp · 29/09/2020 21:21

@SallySolardel

I did it once. My next drink tasted so rubbery I've been put off it for life
I did this when younger. My parent were really pissed off that their coffees tasted Rubbery Grin

I can imagine that hot water bottles could contain bacteria and mold. If you want to reheat the water then do it in a pot.

AlCalavicci · 29/09/2020 21:37

I am glad I am not the only one that uses a kettle to fill my hot water bottle , I if I use the tap I would have to run over a gallon of water to get just about warm water thanks to the gazillion miles of pipe work .
I wash in bracing fecking freezing water in the morning unless the heating is already on or I use the just about warmer water out of last nights bottle
So there is no water to reboil

LadyofMisrule · 29/09/2020 21:47

My housemate at uni did this. It was disgusting. We'd been wondering for weeks why our drinks tasted so weird.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/09/2020 22:27

Another great water saving tip here...

Why not use half the flush from your toilet to fill your kettle, if it does not need a 'full force flush' (if you know what I mean). Just prop the kettle in the pan before you press the handle (or pull the chain for those in older properties) and you also benefit from no rubbery taste!

My DMum kept an old kettle (on the hob, not electric) specially for reusing hot water bottle water.

She's generally thrifty anyhow (wartime generation) but she took to doing this when she got a water meter.

Shizzlestix · 29/09/2020 22:59

Water your plants/lawn instead. Pretty disgusting.

SuzieQQQ · 30/09/2020 07:15

Yabu. Why would you do that?? Just boil the jug (with normal tap water), put a bit of cold water in the hottie and then top it up with boiled water from the jug!

Ethelswith · 30/09/2020 07:18

Why would you do that?

To save water

If you cannot have a second kettle, then watering plants is a good idea. Or any other non-drinking use

ScottishStottie · 30/09/2020 07:21

I did it once, when i was a student and had a kettle in my room. Thought i was saving lots of time by just emptying and refilling the same water from my hot water bottle.

Next time i made tea i was nearly sick... Never did it again.

FlatShite · 30/09/2020 07:22

I used to do this as a teenager, out of laziness.

I stopped when my dad started wondering why his coffee tasted "rubbery".

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 30/09/2020 07:25

Use the cold HWB water to flush the toilet? Then boil some fresh water.

nitsandwormsdodger · 30/09/2020 07:39

Why did you do that ?
Just boil a fresh kettle of water?
Use the old water for your plants

Emeraldshamrock · 30/09/2020 11:06

🤮 It wouldn't be my thing. Fresh straight from the kettle.

Lozz22 · 30/09/2020 11:12

Rank!! 🤮

Enchantmentz · 30/09/2020 11:16

I use hot water from the kettle despite their warning/advice not to. Kettle water can damage inside the hot water bottle and degrade the the rubber and at worst the hot water bottle can burst. So I wouldn't reuse water from the bottle as I imagine ingesting rubber particles and associated chemicals through cups of tea etc can't be good for your health. If you really want to use a spare or cheap 2nd hand kettle.

Angelina82 · 30/09/2020 11:26

If it’s not to be tight or environmentally friendly I would be interested to know your reason for doing this.

Sarah0824 · 27/03/2022 09:43

Put the used hot water bottle water in a pan to reheat. Don't use the kettle, hot water bottles are lined on the inside and it contains BPA so tastes yucky (I accidentally used the kettle, not knowing this and it's something you only do once).
Think we all need penny saving tips these days.
