Consulting children when moving house

This is a case of 'was I being unreasonable' as it's in the past.
We used to live in a very rough inner city area on a large estate and spent ages looking for a house exchange to a rural area. By the time we got an exchange the kids had grown into teenagers and hated living out in the sticks. After a few years we moved to a smaller town with more going on for the kids and they've loved living here.
I asked our son today if we consulted him and his brother when we moved out of the city and he said no, we just moved because my husband and I wanted to and that their teenage years were miserable because they couldn't go anywhere or hang out with friends all the time.
I know it's past and done, but WIBU moving without properly consulting our children?

If you had stayed in a rough inner city area for their teenage years they could have ended up worse off than just bored. So I wouldn’t beat yourself up about that.

The thought of moving my kids away from all their memories and friends is heartbreaking but we probably will have to do it in a few years for secondary school. Dreading how my eldest will cope with it when the time comes, he’s already said he never ever wants to move house!
