Is this a boy?!

LauD2020 · 29/09/2020 10:53

Hi everyone

I had my 20 weeks scan a few weeks ago. At 15 weeks we was told boy At hospital was scanned for around 40 minutes, then at 16 a girl at a private clinic scanned for no more than 5 minutes and then at 20 weeks a boy at my anomaly scan which took 55 minutes .

She gave me this picture and said this was the boy bits. It is a front shot so the bladder is above it and I have circled what she told me was balls and penis. Do you all think this looks like a boy shot?

Is this a boy?!

Does it matter? Really? Looks like a lovely baby to me.

Congratulations!

KTD27 · 29/09/2020 11:43

Didn’t you post this thread yesterday?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/09/2020 11:48

Just look forward to a healthy baby - you can confirm the sex when s'he is born, and you will love that baby more than life itself no matter what.

FourPlasticRings · 29/09/2020 11:49

@Seeingadistance

What happened to waiting until the baby was born?
People find out earlier for lots of reasons. I did in my first pregnancy largely because I knew so little about the kid I didn't feel like intentionally denying myself the little bit of information I could find out. I also didn't like the sonographer knowing more about my kid than I did. Some do it to bond or to prepare an older sibling (and yes, some do it so they can pigeon-hole their child into narrow gender roles at the earliest possible opportunity). I've not found out with my second (due any day now) and do actually prefer not knowing thus far, but don't see anything wrong with wanting to know. The first time around we still went for neutral colours with everything, but it was nice to not have to use 'it' as the pronoun and I did feel more bonded to DD as a fetus than I do to DC2.
IndiaMay · 29/09/2020 11:54

Just wait until its born! Why is everyone so impatient nowadays?!

MazMcG · 29/09/2020 11:54

Hiya,

I don't know what gender your baby is, but please ignore all of the negative people on here. For some reason some of the people on this site see it as their personal mission in life to make others feel bad about themselves. Congratulations on your beautiful little baby, regardless of gender! I can completely understand your annoyance/confusion at this, given that you want to know the gender of your baby and have been told both genders.

Icantrememebrtheartist · 29/09/2020 12:00

I’ve had three children and the shape of the skull was different for my son compared to my daughters. Although I always wanted a surprise so never found out.

Buy beautiful white baby bits and once baby is safely here and you know for sure you can buy other bits.

Good luck!

Illberidingshotgun · 29/09/2020 12:20

IME boys are pretty obvious on a scan if the correct area is examined, so I would probably think girl based on this, but it's difficult looking at a single scan photo as opposed to the actual scan. Personally I would assume nothing and prepare for either, just to be on the safe side.

HattonsMustard · 29/09/2020 12:25

At my 20 week scans with both boys the sonographer was able to put the probe thing under the baby's bum and their legs were apart, it was incredibly clear that there were a set of testicles and a penis. There was no hmm I wonder what this is. None of the "burger" bits a really clear boy on both occasions.

However I didn't really go into the blue for boys, I had white vests and either white or bright colour babygrows. So had he been a girl then it wouldn't have mattered anyway. The room at home was in a neutral shade and the bedding was white!

Just wait till your baby is here to be absolutely sure.

Ultrasounds are hard to interpret. That's why professionals do it. Don't worry about what random people on MN think, go with professional advice.

@BarbaraofSeville

There was a 'Daily Mail sad face' type story featured on this morning's BBC breakfast where a woman who'd had two scans during pregnancy that had said that her baby was a girl had given birth to a boy.

This was a dreadful disaster because she had picked a name, bought loads of welcome baby girl balloons and girly clothes, and decorated the nursery in pink.

If there was ever a lesson about stereotypes and not making choices based on scans that are fairly accurate, but far from 100%, then she definitely learned it Grin.

This with bells on.

@BarbaraofSeville please run for PM.

@Cocomarine

I’m a sonographer, 16 years experience, mainly in antenatal, though I’ve done some fertility clinic work pre-conception too.

No way is that a boy! It’s quite a common mistake - hormonally enlarged clitoris, really normal at 20 weeks. Definitely a girl.

If that has you wondering... that’s why the internet is not better than your medics.

I Specifically said I didn't want to know sex of baby...And the Sonographer said ''There's his spine''...I said ''His??

She said ''Uh, we call all babies ''He''..😂

Sure enough, Out popped a boy.

Re. Dr Google/Internet...was told off last year by an experienced nurse at a hospital for looking up stuff online {But ironically it was NHS advice that had me hot-footing it to Eye hospital}

Eye hospital nurse said a lot of times people are given terrible advice online by completely unqualified people. Mumsnet warns specifically about this in their header.

Spidey66 · 29/09/2020 12:40

It looks like the baby's head to me. Which shows it's a bit pointless asking random strangers what they think!

Because if it is a girl you have to buy EVERYTHING pink, and start limiting your child’s life chances based on its genitals. Don’t you know a girl will turn out to be a lesbian if anyone “misgenders” her as a boy. EVERYTHING MUST BE PINK.

Also, if it is a boy and anyone mistakes him for a boy his willy will instantly fall off.

Babies’ genitals matter!

True science fact.

oakleaffy · 29/09/2020 12:45

Good grief......Having a baby's room all prepared {the Linked story above}
The name 'ISABELLA' on the wall....
Could be changed to ''ISABOY-A''

StatisticalSense · 29/09/2020 12:46

How can we say what gender they is before they have the opportunity to understand the world around them and express themselves as to what they identify as based off of a picture that takes no account of the internal factors that determine gender?

Hingeandbracket · 29/09/2020 12:46

We asked not to know (12 years ago) - were we weird?

I think that was my friend she had five boys was told number 6 was a girl then the midwife wandered out saying she wasn't in labour only for her husband to end up catching the baby she ended up going into shock (medically) and she had bought everything pink (literally) the store refused to take it back so she went to the papers they then decide as a "gesture of good will" they will exchange it for her 🙄 but she had several scans saying girl

MojoJojo71 · 29/09/2020 12:54

I’m also a sonographer and can’t call it either way based on that picture, I’d need to see it from different angles to understand the anatomy. Sometimes it’s impossible to tell one way or the other and even when it seems pretty clear it’s still not 100% accurate. Looks like you’ll have to wait until baby is born to see which genitals it has.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 29/09/2020 12:55

I had a scan with my PFB and was told it was a girl. I was a wee bit disappointed as I really wanted a son but I knew I’d love my child regardless. Anyway, I ended up having a son who spent his first weeks in pink outfits. He is a joy and very loving.
With my second, I did not ask for the sex (though dreamt he was a boy) and he was a pleasant surprise. I bought everything in white, yellow and green for him.

steff13 · 29/09/2020 12:57

That looks like nothing to me. 2/3 of the techs said boy, I would go with boy. If you're not comfortable with that, you'll have to wait until the birth.

PleasantVille · 29/09/2020 13:06

What is your AIBU, how can anyone vote on this?

As everyone else has said either what and see or get a trained professional to tell you
