Turns out Parliament bars are exempt from the curfew.
I can’t quote but Animal Farm is trending on twitter. For some reason.

They should at least pay the tax on booze like us plebs, for the economy like.

contrmary · 28/09/2020 10:40

It's a workplace though, not a public bar, so it's exempt.

notsodimwit · 28/09/2020 10:41

Its bloody shocking! ..

twoshedsjackson · 28/09/2020 10:41

I was amazed to hear this on the radio. If anybody should be leading by example......but then I had a reality check and reverted to my usual cynicism.

Mrsjayy · 28/09/2020 10:41

Thirsty work the waffling though poor lambs deserve a drink at 10.30 Confused. Yanbu obvs

Rumblebear · 28/09/2020 10:43

I see the logic for the physical space being open as they hand round waiting for late sessions I believe as a lot of offices are quite a bit away from the Chamber. But no need for alcohol to be served post 10. Is that the case or is it just the space is still open?

Mrsjayy · 28/09/2020 10:43

It's a workplace though, not a public bar, so it's exempt.
Oh that's brilliant

chomalungma · 28/09/2020 10:44

Optics. It's all about the optics.

OP posts:
Hmmph · 28/09/2020 10:46

I don’t think they should be serving alcohol in their workplace at all at any time.

But definitely not exempting themselves from the laws that they make everyone else follow. I don’t care that it’s not a public bar - they should be leading by example.

Are university bars exempt to?

PaulineScrambledPhones · 28/09/2020 10:53

It’s a “canteen”, apparently.

To think tthe 10pn cufew should apply to Parliament bars as well ll
unmarkedbythat · 28/09/2020 10:55

Those bars should not exist, let alone be subsidised and made exempt from the restrictions applied to the rest of us.

Bad optics, and this is a government elected all about appearances rather than actual substance, so they really shouldn't be getting this sort of thing so very wrong.

happinessischocolate · 28/09/2020 10:56

@contrmary

It's a workplace though, not a public bar, so it's exempt.
And how many workplaces have their own private bars 😂 a canteen yes, but a private ---- bar not so much
TheQueef · 28/09/2020 10:57

How many workplaces breathalise staff!

CitizenFame · 28/09/2020 10:58

YABU - they just set the rules, not follow them, that’s just for the plebs (I’m joking, you are obviously not being unreasonable).

Thisisnotnormal69 · 28/09/2020 10:59

I think it’s likely that though they are technically exempt, they will follow the same rules as elsewhere. Same with the smoking exemption.

iVampire · 28/09/2020 11:00

I can see why they might want to keep a cafe open - they work long and strange hours

No reason to keep a bar open

corythatwas · 28/09/2020 11:00

It's a workplace though, not a public bar, so it's exempt

Since the rule is about the consumption of alcohol they could easily meet this by simply stop serving booze after 10 pm. Problem solved.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/09/2020 11:01

I don’t think they should be serving alcohol in their workplace at all at any time

I agree. Within the public sector we are absolutely not allowed to have alcohol on the premises, not even as a one off for a Christmas lunch event that we have, or when someone is leaving. We are also not allowed to claim for alcohol as business expenses.

Funny how neither of these rules apply to MPs, nor does the endless pay freeze that everyone else has been subject to.

We're all in this together. Are we fuck like Hmm

Mrsjayy · 28/09/2020 11:04

Ah of course a workplace canteen well that's alright then 🙄

Brighterthansunflowers · 28/09/2020 11:09

They shouldn’t be drinking alcohol while working at all regardless of the pandemic. It wouldn’t be acceptable in any other job.

I agree with PP, I see why the physical space may need to be open but it absolutely should be subject to the same rules about serving booze after 10pm

It’s another case of rules they make not applying to themselves, which only encourages everyone else to ignore them as well, since even the rule makers can’t be arsed to follow them

Mrsjayy · 28/09/2020 11:15

Apparently there is 19 hospitality places in Westminster funnily enough the information isn't available right now. So I'm assuming they are not all opened past 10 just the private members "canteen"

RuggerHug · 28/09/2020 11:19

contrmary By that logic a public bar is a place of work for the staff.

Sally872 · 28/09/2020 11:20

Ridiculous!!!! How much work gets done in a canteen after 10pm???? Most people working late are at their computer getting on with it.

Shouldn't be drinking at work anyway. They should be following the same rules as everyone else even if there is a loophole they should want to lead by example.

They are so arrogant they couldn't forsee how this will look.

Sparklesocks · 28/09/2020 11:25

They don’t give a single fuck

MandosHatHair · 28/09/2020 11:28

Wow, they really are a law onto themselves aren't they?
