Turns out Parliament bars are exempt from the curfew.
I can’t quote but Animal Farm is trending on twitter. For some reason.

We are not all in this together.

Not one fucking bit.

This government is an abomination.

Mrsjayy · 28/09/2020 11:32

Its just elitism isn't it "they " are more important than "us"

CitizenFame · 28/09/2020 11:33

This government is an abomination.

The bars in parliament have always been exempt from rules regarding alcohol, it’s not just “this government”.

Wiredforsound · 28/09/2020 11:36

Totally agree. Alcohol should not be served at all in HoC. It’s bonkers that it is.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 28/09/2020 11:48

The bars in parliament aren’t even open at the moment anyway. Only some places that serve food where you can also get a glass of wine or similar (and there’s only a few that serve alcohol)

WalesAppearsToBeSlightlySaner · 28/09/2020 11:51

If it's a workplace they should be sober, if it's a bar it should shut. I live in Cardiff where we are no longer allowed to meet anyone inside we don't live with. There are no bubbles, no extended households, no exceptions for people who live alone or children. Meeting my parents in their conservatory for a cuppa is now a criminal offence. I think MPs can do without a pint.

Mrsjayy · 28/09/2020 11:57

why would somebody need a meal / wine at 10.15 just go for your "break " at 9.30 if you are working late. Hospital restaurants are not open late are they?

vinoandbrie · 28/09/2020 12:00

Parliament has moved quickly to shut this down:

CONFIRMED: A parliament spokesperson says: “Alcohol will not be sold after 10pm anywhere on the parliamentary estate.”

This is per a tweet by Aubrey Allegretti, a Sky News reporter.

Mrsjayy · 28/09/2020 12:03

Good they will probably sneak in hip flasks and g n t tins but least the bars are following the actual law.

Lilybet1980 · 28/09/2020 12:05

And how many workplaces have their own private bars 😂 a canteen yes, but a private ---- bar not so much

Plenty that I’ve been to. Anywhere that has private dining usually does, so lots of large corporates, professional services firms, lawyers, banks, etc. So lots of places in London, but definitely a certain kind of place.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 28/09/2020 12:05

Parliament have just confirmed that they will follow the rules and not serve alcohol after 10pm.

@Mrsjayy most canteens/restaurants are closed by 10pm anyway, in one or two you can get hot food until 10:30pm. It’s because if the House is sitting until late you might not be able to leave the chamber until then if you are speaking.

Elieza · 28/09/2020 12:45

There shouldnt be alcohol served to people who are working in the first place. None of the rest of government is allowed to drink and work.
Fair enough canteens opening late for shift workers to get coffee or dinner at midnight or whatever but not alcohol.

I don’t even agree with alcohol with meals when ‘working’ and hosting an event. Water, juice or tea fine. Expensive wines with every course paid for by the public purse, nope.

Potionqueen · 28/09/2020 12:50

@Mrsjayy when I worked night shifts at a hospital the only food available for staff was a huge vending machine with disgusting pies and burgers in it. You then microwaved them.
No one used them as the food was inedible.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 28/09/2020 12:52

@chomalungma

Optics. It's all about the optics.
Abso-bloody-lutely
Livelovebehappy · 28/09/2020 12:52

Why have a night time onsite bar anyway? I’m guessing they’re not actually working at 10pm, so it’s purely somewhere to socialise? If they need a drink so badly after work, do what the rest of us do - pick up a bottle of wine or some cans from the supermarket on their way home. Another case of ‘do what we say, not what we do’.

Only done so because they got caught out but it goes to show the contempt they hold us in.

Similar to when they have a vote on their own pay rises.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 28/09/2020 13:08

@thecatsatonthewall the Speaker of the HoC said last week that they would be following the new rules.... it’s a great story for newspapers but there’s no actual u-turn or change in policy. It’s just that it’s a technical exemption. And I say that as no fan of the current government!

thecatsatonthewall · 28/09/2020 13:13

@Thisisnotnormal69 then how come for the last week, MPs have been able to buy alcohol in bars - technical or not?

Had the 'papers not picked up on this, the exemption would have continued.

adawong · 28/09/2020 13:25

No they don't. They haven't done since 2009.

BashfulClam · 28/09/2020 13:45

It’s great subsidised nature that gets me. The taxpayer pays thousands to wine and find Mp’s who I’m sure could afford to pay in full in their wages. They probably claim it back as an expense.

thereisonlyoneofme · 28/09/2020 13:55

I dont think the 10pm rule was in force last week

Stop being mean! You know full well they stick to the rules and only claim permitted expenses and other essentials. Unless it's against the rules when they get caught, they always apologise though. Hmm
barskits · 28/09/2020 14:18

@Mrsjayy

It's a workplace though, not a public bar, so it's exempt. Oh that's brilliant
I know somebody who works on a military base. Their mess bars are closing at 10. If they can do it. so can the HP.

@thecatsatonthewall the papers have been commenting on the technical exemption, not whether they have in reality been serving after 10pm or not (since Thursday). They haven’t. It’s just today the press office have confirmed this due to the press stories.

happytoday73 · 28/09/2020 14:56

I think this is a good opportunity to close the bar for good. People shouldn't be drinking in their working day. Let's just offer tea, coffee, juice and water at cost price
