To think corporate wardrobe is over

Just that really. I don't see office attire ever coming back after covid.

We’re not dressing as formally as we did, but we haven’t gone as far as hoodies. Women tend to wear a smart top and necklace and the men will wear a shirt, but the bodycon dresses and the ties have gone.

SpikeyBaby · 28/09/2020 08:16

I'm a lecturer so I've always erred on the casual side even when in 'the office' 5 days a week, but I've lived in jeans and yoga pants for the last 6 months and loved it. It's utter bliss not to have to think about what to wear every morning. I don't miss 'workwear' at all and in fact took a whole bunch of stuff to the charity shop last weekend as I know I'll never ever wear it again.

I do slap on a bit of lippy and brush my hair if I've got to spend the day on Teams, though. And if I'm filming a lecture I'll sling a smarter shirt on.

I might even shower, keep those professional standards up Wink

DuesToTheDirt · 28/09/2020 08:55

Our office has always been casual. We are not customer facing, and nobody cares what we wear. There are many scruffs casual dressers, and if I turned up in a body con dress or a suit people would think I'd lost my marbles.

tectonicplates · 28/09/2020 09:44

I recently asked a question about trying to sell a good quality suit that hasn't fitted me for years, and was told more or less not to bother as I'd barely get any money for it.

Frappuccinofan · 28/09/2020 11:38

When posters say casual, what sort of items of clothing are you referring to?

I just want a frame of reference as I work in banking and still wear corporate attireSad

user1487194234 · 28/09/2020 11:42

I like to wear my work clothes whether WFH or not
Makes me feel more professional

MacOrMc · 28/09/2020 12:01

There's no way I'm wearing my work clothes at home. Certainly not the trousers and jackets, maybe a couple of the tops. I'm back in my office some of the time, so I wear the smart stuff then, and I make sure my top half is presentable for any meetings, but after years of tights and restrictive waistbands, I'm enjoying the comfort.

Lyricallie · 28/09/2020 12:33

I definitely agree. My work is not customer focused and is in STEM so was pretty causal before. I had plenty of smart tops that I wore with jeans before lockdown to work.

However now it's strappy tops and leggings. Usually with a fluffy jumper as it gets colder.

I wouldn't wear strappy tops to work, I'd feel to naked but kicking about the house no issues.

I've stopped wearing PJs as I definitely think it wasn't putting me into the right mindset.

However I will note, I've never worked in an industry where smart clothes were expected.

Thirtyrock39 · 28/09/2020 12:36

Like some previous posters I do wear work clothes when wfh - helps me get in work mode- but very much the casual end of my work wadrobe - eg cords with smart shirt and comfy cardy. I like having the distinction between work and 'home' clothes

Thisisworsethananticpated · 28/09/2020 12:39

Tights can completely do one

Oh yes , hell yes

My 'casual' at work would be black jeans, sweaters, loose shirts, cardis, converse, DMs, etc. I did wear 'smarter' clothes now and again but that would mean eg: midi skirts with bike boots and a jumper or a pair of cropped trousers with a linen blazer and converse.

I have never and would never want a job that required me to wear traditional corporate attire eg: a 'blouse', pencil skirt, sheer tights, heels. I agree Gillian Anderson looks hot AF in those silk blouses but in real life it's a bit of a cliche.

Today I'm wearing a Toast fair isle jumper, blue jeans and slippers. I had to film myself for a lecture I'm giving next week so I kept my feet out of sight Grin

nosswith · 28/09/2020 15:12

I think it will but perhaps less often as wfh for part of the week may be common place for many office based jobs.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 28/09/2020 15:33

I haven’t ever worn formal office wear - I’ve never owned a suit - but my current job is pretty laid back on dress in the office and probably more so now we’re all WFH. Obviously we have to be decent (when it was hot I kept a T-shirt to hand incase anyone video called as I was wearing a bikini) but I don’t think anyone dresses up or bothers too much with makeup. In winter my every day clothes are dresses or skirts and sweaters, with leggings and I can’t see that changing.

luckylavender · 28/09/2020 15:37

It's been 6 months. Like being on mat leave. Plenty of people go back to corporate attire.

ChavvySexPond · 28/09/2020 15:42

I've worn stretchy jersey shorts for so long my jeans feel weird. I might go full trackie bottom for the winter.

My heels have gone to the charity shop. My wardrobe full of wide legged trousers and pussy bow blouses has been boxed up on top of the wardrobe.

What's left is mostly jeans and athletic wear. But I don't see any reason why I couldn't wear a plain charcoal coloured running top with thumb holes on a call. Grin I'll just bung a necklace on. Wink

Jewellery's another thing I haven't been wearing. Not even earrings. But earrings would probably zhuzh things up on a call where they can only really see my head and shoulders.

God. We think we've adjusted.

We haven't adjusted.

I love my brooches to, but because we haven't been wearing jackets and coats they haven't seen the light of day since March. I love a smart coat too. Usually.

ChavvySexPond · 28/09/2020 15:49

When I started we all bought "workwear" from Next which was barely one step up from school uniform without the tie.

Things change. We change.

I'll channel Lauren Bacall again one day for face to face work stuff but I'm never going to do that sort of performance of being at work on a call.

I work. My work is the evidence of that. What I'm wearing is unrelated.

Office dress codes are going the way of the Dodo. (Because people like me will no longer tolerate them)

I am with you on this (to the barricades!).

Fuck off to dress codes.

PigletJohn · 28/09/2020 16:00

I wonder if I could wear a suit and tie to go shopping?

I'm not going to get much use out of them otherwise.

thepeopleversuswork · 28/09/2020 16:05

I quite miss nice tailoring tbh although I'm damned if I'm buying suits at the moment and it seems a bit daft putting smart clothes on to sit in your bedroom all day.

I think there's going to be a backlash at some point and people will reembrace glam. I hate the feeling that I'm slobbing around all day and not having a reason to spruce up.

I hate not having the distinction between work and home clothes and I actually miss heels.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 28/09/2020 16:07

YANBU

MustWe · 28/09/2020 16:16

My boss has been wearing Hush style clothing even for meetings for a few years now. She looks smart but not corporate. I think it’s going that way. Everyone wants to be a bit cooler and edgier in the way they design their offices and the clothing needs to change to go with it.

PigletJohn · 28/09/2020 16:20

It's acceptable to wear a velvet smoking jacket in your own home, but I'm finding it difficult to source one with frogs.

Bankingswitch · 28/09/2020 16:23

I have pets crawling all over me so happy to be more casual at home

Ihatefish · 28/09/2020 16:30

Most professional firms I Know have a dress for your day policy, ie if you’re sitting at your desk jeans and top, meeting clients= business attire. I’d already noticed a real fall in the number of women’s suits in shops even before covid
