To think corporate wardrobe is over

Just that really. I don't see office attire ever coming back after covid.

I shower, do my hair and makeup and dress for work even though I WFH. I change at the end of my shift and close my office door. Work/life balance and all that.

OhTheRoses · 27/09/2020 20:58

I don't work in a very corporate environment but I wear my work dresses at home (sometimes trousers and a top). I don't wear heels at all but I cannot work in slippers. I have bought some clogs.

I like to do my hair and make-up and the perfume is for me.

I like there to be a divide.

Callipygion · 27/09/2020 21:04

I like uniform, saves having to decide what to wear (I’m very indecisive! 😁)

julietmanchester · 27/09/2020 21:04

@BlueJava

I have noticed a lot of clothing retailers are struggling, but I assume skincare products are selling more (everyone I know now is more into their skincare routine for pampering or relaxation during lockdown).

I don't think all retailers will be worse off. Just my thoughts.

My firm (pretty strict and old-fashioned!) has really relaxed the dress code. Casual wear is fine if you want to go to the office.

The only thing they ask is that you have a smart top if you have a video meeting with clients.

I can't say I'd never go back to wearing business dress, but whilst the world's still pretty topsy turvy I'm happy to stay in what's most comfortable for now.

I've completely stopped wearing makeup too. Pre-covid I wouldn't have dared go to the office without a full face.

sergeilavrov · 27/09/2020 21:20

I've been teaching online (university, so undergrad and doctoral students), and hell would freeze over before I stood up and revealed I'm in floral pyjama trousers. I've always been the type of person who is dressed for the parents in law even if I just intend on sitting at home alone all day, and I've found myself become more relaxed since more of my time is at home.

jcurve · 27/09/2020 21:21

My company had “dress for your day” pre Covid so we had a mixed bag of attire but as I’m client facing, my work wardrobe is a mix of business formal and casual.

I’ve adopted a pretty steady wardrobe of Lululemon since 100% wfh but if I’m speaking with a client, I tend to put on a silk shirt & some makeup (with jeans off camera).

I don’t think business formal will die; people will return to the office next year. Clients don’t appreciate jeans. Certainly near my office in the City, people are already dressing formally for their days in the office.

grenlei · 27/09/2020 21:22

Totally depends where you work...certain companies are still VERY keen on a smart dress code , as demonstrated by this recent article

Like @sergeilavrov I’m a lecturer. I’m wearing nice clothes and makeup, but more the kind of thing I would wear for lunch out than actual work. I often wear midi dresses, or jeans and a top, last week I cracked out some lovely cord culottes from Cos. I always wear perfume too.

I teach in a creative subject so am never suited and booted for work anyway. I don’t even own heels.

At the end of the working day I pack my laptop away and go for a walk, then change into comfy loungewear.

I read a piece somewhere the other week - possibly in the Guardian - that sales of tailoring were right down, and also “smart” coats.

jcurve · 27/09/2020 21:32

@PamDemic I did the same last week Grin Thank goodness for cameras from chest height upwards...

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 27/09/2020 21:33

If I wear a suit to work people assume I'm at court that day 😁, always been that way

jcurve · 27/09/2020 21:36

@Judystilldreamsofhorses I’m not surprised that sales of tailoring are down. There’s a few current pieces that I would have bought in a heartbeat pre Covid but I genuinely don’t know when I’ll get a chance to wear them.

I bought a beautiful pair of Sergio Rossi heels from the Outnet just as lockdown started & they’ve never been taken out of the box Confused

Thisisworsethananticpated · 27/09/2020 21:39

letmethinkaboutitfornow

I’m now imagining you in a full suit and shirt every day in your living room

Surely not !

God I agree , I need to upgrade my gear to more luxe , so a cashmere hoodie and some really swanky leggings

I’ve really let myself go

fiorentina · 27/09/2020 21:41

I still wear a smart blouse or top to work from home. Or a smart jumper. Always wear jewellery/make up/door my hair. I feel far more professional that way on video calls.
I don’t think smart work attire will disappear completely but maybe a toned down version.

grenlei · 27/09/2020 21:42

@PamDemic I've heard similar. Definitely wasn't surprised when I read that article!

I'm also a lawyer although I work in-house so it's a permanent dress down. Very different from when I started my legal career and it was all suits, absolutely no bare legs or trousers for ladies, and no short sleeve shirts for men (if it got really hot they were allowed to roll up their sleeves Grin).

grenlei · 27/09/2020 21:43

Currently WFH I am mainly in athleisure. Or occasionally my pyjamas Blush

jelly79 · 27/09/2020 21:45

I used to dress up for work day's and dress down for days off with the kids. Now it's the opposite I am 100% WFH

Thisisworsethananticpated · 27/09/2020 21:45

I don’t really do video calls unless it’s clients
And even then we don’t always
But - I do feel the need to get some nicer comfy Casual gear

We have a very well known tech client and it makes me laugh that I was shocked when I first met the client and they turned up in scruffy jeans
Suits feel really old fashions now

EinsteinaGogo · 27/09/2020 21:46

Like lots of PPs, my early working days meant skirt suits / trouser suits / Austin Reed, and moved to tailored shift dresses and jackets.

Things had relaxed anyway over the last few years and now, even more so.

WFH means 'had a wash / made an effort'. There is definitely no corporate inform in my colleague & client circle....

Nacreous · 27/09/2020 21:50

I'm still wearing nearly the same thing as I wore in the office: dresses, usually fairly structured but still comfy. But my entire goal with office attire was to look stylish while still being totally comfy: I often wish I could wear my smart stuff at the weekends. Some of it is a bit off the wall (I have a bright orange dress that I love but it is a bit mad) but it's all definitely smart so no one could complain that I'm not dressed appropriately.

The change is that I wouldn't usually wear a cardigan to the office - would wear a jacket instead, but would wear a cardigan at home. And then thermal leggings and thick socks (and hopefully sheepskin slippers once they arrive) underneath because my house is freezing already.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/09/2020 21:50

Agreed. Back in the day I had some lovely workwear. Dh went from Hugo Boss / Givenchy etc suits to jeans and steel toe capped boots. His latest suit came from M&S...

WrongKindOfFace · 27/09/2020 21:57

We went to a relaxed dress code during lockdown but are now back in office wear. Apart from my feet - despite having shoes at work most days I can’t be bothered to change out of my trainers (I often walk to work now). Nobody can see under my desk and we don’t have face to face meetings any more.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/09/2020 21:57

@jcurve I was initially going to be doing some face to face teaching, but that was canned when cases started rising. The week before we started I took all my beautiful Cos wool trousers to the dry cleaner (I wear them with trainers for being in work, but they are really lovely and could be worn in a much more formal way by someone else). And now they are in bags on the back of the door in the spare room. See also my leather skirts.
