It s getting cold and I was looking through coats online when I found this monstrousity.
Last week I was agreeing with parents who called their teenagers ridiculous for refusing to wear a coat in bitter cold weather.
Now I so sympathise having remembered my mother buying me this horror in year 9.
It was long wine coloured and sectioned like picture.
I was a skinny kid and looked like a long and very cold earthworm.
This thing came off as soon as I approached the school gates and stayed in my bag till hometime (shoved in my locker).
So aibu to ask you to share coat or other clothing shame teen memories and to ask parents of teen dc to consult them before buying clothes of shame?
Here it is

@HeyDuggeeWhatYaDoin what?! Why?! Totally impractical

Atalune · 27/09/2020 22:09

Tucker boots?

I had a pair of blue sort of shiny fabric boots that had a big cuff but they were ankle boots. Worn with black ski trousers with an elastic heel strap?? They made your legs look like an odd triangular shape.

Anyone?

Facelikearustytractor · 27/09/2020 22:09

@HeyDuggeeWhatYaDoin

Spliffy jackets 🤣🤣
I lived on a council estate and I remember our head teacher going apeshit that eight year olds were turning up to school wearing these. I mean who in their right mind would send their kid to school in in one of those?!

I did have a patchwork jacket with fluffy collar and sleeves in the late nineties which was rather 70's. I also donned a long camel coat on my nights out which got covered in kebab and drain juice. Underneath was a fetching ensemble of silver bra, white sea-through t-shirt, turquoise skirt and white platform shoes or maybe a leather skirt. Basically a cross between a flasher or a prostitute. I did all the ropey 90's trends in quick succession.

Thank fuck I want to stand out as little as possible now.

TyroBurningDownTheCloset · 27/09/2020 22:10

Ah, the ridiculously oversized jeans! I'll never forget learning the hard way not to ride a bike in those...

RomaineCalm · 27/09/2020 22:12

This was my going out outfit in the early 80's. Clockhouse at C&A.

I thought I looked amazing.

I had a bag shaped like a corset 😂

crumpet · 27/09/2020 22:16

Multi layered red ra-ra skirt. I looked like a pompom

1Morewineplease · 27/09/2020 22:18

Long skirts for posh evening wear in the early 70s.
Also kilts in the 70s. My heart bleeds for all those schoolgirls currently being forced to wear them.
Also high necked frilly collars on nylon ( BO enhancing) blouses.

malificent7 · 27/09/2020 22:22

I lovecthe earthworm coat!

recklessruby · 27/09/2020 22:29

@malificent7 you can buy it on Amazon Smile.
Also the thing never wore out, I never outgrew it either.
It got "lost" by year 10.

Love the thread!
I have to add with the pedal pushers I always wanted (but was too big of boob!) To wear those napkin tops does anyone remember them? Like bandanas were in style for your head too but a matching bandana and triangle top thing with pedal pushers would have been amazing. Can't remember what shoes tho.

AdvicePleaseThankyou · 27/09/2020 22:38

Trouser skirts - yuk!
Wooden heeled clogs in pale colors
Kappa popper joggers (P.E)
Velvet silky blouses

Shizzlestix · 27/09/2020 22:49

Brown nylon trousers. I put a hole in the arse sliding down the flyover slope doing a game aged 6 and walked home with my knickers on show.

NancyPickford · 27/09/2020 22:58

My liberty bodice didn’t have any fastenings, it was just like a sturdier vest. This would have been late-50s.
And until tights became freely available, I spent my first year at high school wearing stockings and suspenders.

pugmum123 · 27/09/2020 22:58

@Mellonsprite you beat me to it! I was also banned from a perm as I’d used too much ‘sun in’ on my hair😂

keeprocking · 27/09/2020 23:23

@zaphodbeeble

The Campri ski jacket (late 80’s), everyone had one usually in hideous neon colours. Mine was red, green and black. I also owned a lightweight summer version.
I shudder when I remember one particular pupil who used to wear one, horrible child!
NeonBella · 27/09/2020 23:30

Sweater shop jumpers.
Fucking hideous and worn with baggy jeans with a huge coloured back pocket.

Also the colour changing t shirt

shudder

No fashion thread is complete without a mention of Suzy Quattro's fat nan www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/3106919-Anyone-want-to-come-and-mourn-the-reality-vs-expectation-of-new-purchases-with-me

keeprocking · 27/09/2020 23:35

I'm loving all the talk about Liberty bodices, for once I don't feel quite so out on a limb, age-wise!
How many of your mothers made Clothkits clothes? You need to remember that in the 60s and 70s there wasn't the choice of clothes that there is now, sending for those to Lewes was very popular.

keeprocking · 27/09/2020 23:39

From the 80s I recall pie-crust collar blouses, a sticking up frilly collar popularised by the Princess of Wales, they were great if you had a long, elegant, aristocratic-looking neck, on most of us they looked hideous, like a big arrow pointing and saying Double chin!

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/09/2020 23:47

I remember neon coloured string vests which were worn over a contrasting neon coloured t shirt.

Disclaimer. It was the 1980s.

MrsDrudge · 27/09/2020 23:54

Our first school disco (1970) I wore a navy dress with huge white daisies and a massive white collar. My friends mum crocheted her a neon/lime green mini dress with matching beret (I was so envious!) . We both wore our white plastic wet look knee high boots. At the time we wondered why no one asked us to dance!

Lizzie523 · 28/09/2020 01:35

I'm sure it has been mentioned by now but: scousers. I had several colours from What Every Woman Wants Grin

worlybear · 28/09/2020 04:08

I remember wearing a dress made from a black bin bag with a knot tied artfully on the side.
Ait least it was cheap!

ginandgingers92 · 28/09/2020 04:17

Tassel trousers! 90s/ early noughties classic 😂
