It s getting cold and I was looking through coats online when I found this monstrousity.
Last week I was agreeing with parents who called their teenagers ridiculous for refusing to wear a coat in bitter cold weather.
Now I so sympathise having remembered my mother buying me this horror in year 9.
It was long wine coloured and sectioned like picture.
I was a skinny kid and looked like a long and very cold earthworm.
This thing came off as soon as I approached the school gates and stayed in my bag till hometime (shoved in my locker).
So aibu to ask you to share coat or other clothing shame teen memories and to ask parents of teen dc to consult them before buying clothes of shame?
Here it is

Laughing at the imagery of a giant earthworm.
Mine is my own fault but in the late 90s - early 00s the fashion was those really wide flared, super long trousers that draped on the ground and got wet and dirty as you walked. My dad has a photo of me in jeans like that up in his kitchen and every time I see it I plead with him to replace it but it's a group shot with loads of my cousins and he loves it.

I was a teen in the 70s, my favourite dress was almost identical to this one and nearly touched the ground...I thought I was the bees knees Grin

My mother made me wear a pair of trousers with one fluorescent multi-coloured leg and one black one. With a matching fluorescent green grandad shirt.

I hated it. She made me wear it to a family barbecue. I spent the whole day in a full-body cringe.

recklessruby · 27/09/2020 19:00

It (the worm coat) went from my neck to my ankles. In sections. I was long and thin with droopy long hair in a plait.
I was Worm Girl.

Nothing can beat the Bridesmaids' dresses we had made from a Simplicity Pattern.

I have tried to google the sort of thing, and this was the closest I found, but let me tell you, I would have fallen to my knees praising God in gratitude if I had been able to wear one of these instead of the abomination I found myself in.

Ooh I had a poncho! My Mum crocheted it.

I was very proud of it.

I also had a muff.

No sniggering there at the back.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/09/2020 19:10

Here, hold on you lot. It looks like you've been rifling through my wardrobe.

Just please stop it will you?

Therunecaster · 27/09/2020 19:10

@D4rwin

80s jumpsuit. I thought I looked like Ace from Dr Who. My Mum used to buy these velvet skirt with matching waistcoat numbers for both of us to wear for parties. Now they were dire.
I had 3 of those delights. Velvet Burgandy, bottle green corduroy and a hideous orange and yellow flowered number in cheesecloth.

Ah, you young things! (Nods fondly and in an infuriating fashion). I was born in the mid-1950 and had to wear a Liberty Bodice (ask your grannies) AND a vest under my clothes. The Liberty Bodice was finally ditched when I was about 10 or so, and then I "just" wore a vest until I got my first bra, aged 14 or so (mother was against them)!.

@BalloonSlayer I d forgotten simplicity patterns!
My auntie was always buying material and making dsis and me dresses.
I got lucky with the blues and greens but dsis is the youngest and she got pink frills and patterns (she was chubby and would have suited plainer styles). Auntie didnt have daughters so we got "lucky".

I'll mention Adidas poppers as they haven't been mentioned. Cringe.

GuyFawkesDay · 27/09/2020 19:15

Hideous smocked dresses. My mum made me wear them and I loathed them. I was/am a tomboy.

I also had the boy style short haircut aged 7. I was mortified.

My mid 90s teendom fashion mistakes included NafNaf t shirt in black with neon clashing bits. A tartan bomber jacket. Ugh.

TheRIDs · 27/09/2020 19:16

I had a luminous blue and green ski jacket in the late 80s (from that long gone style Mecca known as C&A).

Also had a pink and white shell suit. I remember the way it rustled when I walked. Hideous Grin.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/09/2020 19:16

Houndstooth everything back in the early/mid-eighties I think.

lidoshuffle · 27/09/2020 19:17

An afghan coat which moulted horribly so I looked like a goat even after I'd taken it off. It stank goatlishly too, especially when wet.

@NancyPickford thanks. My mum and granny used to talk about liberty bodices but I had never seen one.
I kind of imagined them like Scarlett o hara s corsets in GWTW I dont know why.

I was kind of a skater chick in the late 90s early 00s. I used to wear Punky Fish tops with lots of zips and cargo trousers with tassels.
I actually had this combination, well bery, very similar 😳😳😳

@Lantern156 "The more ragged, tattered and unkempt your hems, the cooler you were"

I wear all my jeans until they have holes, splits and ragged hems. Can take up to 10 years to achieve as I don't wear jeans every day. But my daughter pays extra money to have the rips, tears and fading from new Hmm.

@recklessruby as a teen lad I had a kipper tie in pink paisley, which I used to wear with patchwork-style wide flared jeans. Even 50 years later I can remember some girls calling at me across the street "tasty geezer" Blush

I had that bridesmaid dress too, my mum made them for me and my two nieces in peach watermarked faux silk, but we had an added cummerbund with a huge bow attached to our bum.
bellinisurge · 27/09/2020 19:25

Jumpsuits. I mean, going to the loo was a nightmare.
