It s getting cold and I was looking through coats online when I found this monstrousity.
Last week I was agreeing with parents who called their teenagers ridiculous for refusing to wear a coat in bitter cold weather.
Now I so sympathise having remembered my mother buying me this horror in year 9.
It was long wine coloured and sectioned like picture.
I was a skinny kid and looked like a long and very cold earthworm.
This thing came off as soon as I approached the school gates and stayed in my bag till hometime (shoved in my locker).
So aibu to ask you to share coat or other clothing shame teen memories and to ask parents of teen dc to consult them before buying clothes of shame?
Here it is

@NancyPickford I remember those. Child of the 60s.they buttoned onto my school skirt I think.
Liberty was a misnomer. I think of them like a corset. Worn for warmth apparently...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/09/2020 19:26

My DMum used to make all my clothes (whole thread in itself . DSis (older) managed to get money to buy clothes . DMum used to find fabric and decide to make me something )

She had a thing about brushing up jumpers or coats to give them the halo of fluff all over .
She made me a coat and matching bag and she brushed up the bag I wouldn't let her near the coat even though she was desperate to fluffy it up.

On the rare occasions I bought something she'd take them to "alter a bit" and I never saw them again ! Hmm

I had a hideous red shiny puffa jacket with sheepskin hood in the late 80s, also some burgundy corduroy ankle boots that really weren't suitable for winter weather. By 14/15 I was dressing very rock/goth, while everyone else was in shellsuits with bubble perms, luckily my mum was very chill with what I wore. I have teenage girls myself and I never, ever pick their clothes 😁

Supersonic I still have some Punkyfish jewellery and love it!

TheOrchidKiller · 27/09/2020 19:31

@BalloonSlayer
I too had a muff. Excellent handwarmer.Grin
My mother made me party dresses from those Simplicity patterns. The blue checked one looks familiar. I had one in green that looked like curtain material. That was the 70s, before I was a teen.

I loved my teen clothes, including the pink legwarmers worn in defiance over maroon school tights.

I had a black knitted leggings-&-tunic ensemble that I was especially proud of. Was probably channelling my inner drama student. (I did not end up studying drama).

I also had one of those navy blue jumpers with the red cherries on, worn with a very full skirt. Wore it for a few weeks at Poly until it dawned on me that it was perfectly acceptable to wear jeans to lectures & no one would tell me off.

Velvet floppy hat with a front that you folded up.

Proudboomer · 27/09/2020 19:33

Bay city roller trousers.
They had a high waist, flared, didn’t touch your ankle and everything was edged in tartan.

When I was 16-17 the popular outfit was a bodice/corset top with bootcut jeans - the mid 00s were something of a wilderness for fashion

@Lantern156

Mega wide leg jeans that acted like sails and constantly trailed in puddles and caught on your shoes. The more ragged, tattered and unkempt your hems, the cooler you were Grin
I had some like this and I bleached them with toilet bleach in parts and they looked awesome...at the time. I'm so embarrassed to think of them now. I was proper rock in my teens Grin
NancyPickford · 27/09/2020 19:35

When I finally emerged from my Liberty Bodices (see above), I plunged wholeheartedly into the last days of the 1960s, wearing bum-skimming mini-skirts, knee-length patent leather boots, and over-the-knee black socks, only to be sent home by the headmistress of my Catholic High School. Recently seeing girls on their way to the local high school, I find myself saying : "Tut! Look at the length of those skirts!" And then remember how I would leave the house wearing a regulation, just-on-the-knee school skirt, and when I was out of sight of the house, would roll up the waistband until the hemline was just under my pants.

I don't pass judgement on DD's unique style either. She buys nearly all her stuff from charity shops & especially likes mens' patterned jumpers from the 80's & 90's. To be fair, she looks good in them.

CatsArePeopleToo · 27/09/2020 19:38

This. Early 90s... almost everyone at school wore them. I didn't have and I felt so left out. Hard to have parents with some sense of taste Grin

It still goes on. I gave up on that with DD when she was at school. In her final year they introduced a new school skirt which was supposed to be resistant to rolling up & of a modest length. All girls were to wear them, but they let the year 11s off for that year. I think they knew they were going to lose that battle!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/09/2020 19:43

Trim jeans!
Was I the only one who wore them outdoors thinking they were 'the thing'?

Hmm I think I was... Blush

VeryQuaintIrene · 27/09/2020 19:45

I had this oversize men's jacket covered in safety pins, badges and other bits of random metal. I thought I looked so cool and punk...

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 27/09/2020 19:46

Shell suits, or the more recent velvet trousers and top. Oh the horror

I used to have one just like this. I felt so cool. I was mortified when I came to my senses lol!

AuntMasha · 27/09/2020 19:52

Puffball skirts. So-called because they made you look like a giant, Fuchsia-coloured mushroom

SociallyDistantPenguin · 27/09/2020 19:53

90s Adidas poppers... bright blue and orange ones!

I loved them, don't know what I was thinking!

@supersonicginandtonic SNAP!

My grandma made most of my clothes when I was little. I remember the liberty bodice- it was made of flanalette bound with satin ribbon which tied in bows fastened it up . It sort of wrapped round quite tightly

Sorry, that was early 60's.

LadyCatStark · 27/09/2020 20:04

@supersonicginandtonic

I was kind of a skater chick in the late 90s early 00s. I used to wear Punky Fish tops with lots of zips and cargo trousers with tassels. I actually had this combination, well bery, very similar 😳😳😳
😂 I had those exact pants 😂, worn so low on the hips that I have no idea how they stayed up and a diamanté thong artfully peeping out of the top of them 🙈 and jeans which soaked water up to my knees when wet. We used to make fishnet “tops” out of neon fishnet tights. You cut off the feet and the crotch and popped your head through the crotch and the legs made the arms, teamed up with a wonder bra of course and worn to “rock night”.
averylongtimeago · 27/09/2020 20:05

I also did a lot of sewing- as a tee in the 70's, including my bridesmaids dress, ina fetching blue floral design. I had a matching style in white nylon lace. We both wore huge floppy hats.
