To think drink driving does not mean lose your license?

Regular poster but name changed.

DH was arrested for drunk driving last night after crashing his car. He blew 104 on the breathalyser then tested 57 at the police station several hours later. He broke his wrist so had to go to hospital before the station.

He's the sole earner in our family- I haven't worked since 2014 since I had our first child- we have 3 DCs (age 6, 3 and 1). If he loses his license he won't be able to get to work which is 15 miles away and not near public transport.

He seems to think that because of this he may be allowed to keep his license. I am desperately clinging to this.

I know what he did is wrong, I know what could have happened so please don't lecture me- he's in more trouble at home I assure you.

I haven't stopped crying all morning. He's such an idiot.

OP, Brew my heart goes out to you, as whatever consequences your dh faces, you face them too, and you’re not at fault. I wish you strength in the coming weeks and months.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 27/09/2020 13:17

What really pisses me off is that they'll use the 57 and not what he blew at roadside. That needs to be changed. These scumbuckets need to face the stiffest penalties possible.

I hope this a wake up call to you, OP. It's very unwise to be financially reliant on a person like this. He doesn't even give a shit what he did, only wants to get out of it.

LindaEllen · 27/09/2020 13:17

Sorry that you're going through this when it really isn't your fault whatsoever.

I would suggest either:

  • You get a job and he stays at home
  • He gets a job close to home (seems like something nobody has suggested so far even though it would be the ideal solution - something within walking distance, no matter what he ends up having to do)
  • You take him to and from work every day
  • He gets a bike to either go the whole way or at least to the nearest public transport
  • He pays for a taxi for the duration of his ban

I would think him getting a different job closer to home would be the most likely, but obviously that depends on what he's working as now, and whether taking a job - any old job - would bring with it an unaffordable wage cut.

Pebblexox · 27/09/2020 13:18

He absolutely should lose his license. He was an idiot. Simple as that.

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 27/09/2020 13:19

Just read that he is a shift worker, so that will make it harder for him to get a lift unless a colleague lives nearby. How could he be so irresponsible...

Also, as others have said, he can't drive with a broken wrist, so don't let him anywhere near your car.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 27/09/2020 13:19

Hang on a minute
So your happy for home to drive with a broken wrist whilst awaiting a Drink drive ban
Hmm

OhCaptain · 27/09/2020 13:19

I wouldn’t be driving him. He can get a bike. It’s not that far.

I’m going to err on the side of optimism and assume this will make you look at what type of husband, father, and man he is.

Selfish prick.

LagunaBubbles · 27/09/2020 13:19

What is he saying about the mess he has caused?

berks · 27/09/2020 13:19

Thanks all. Noted that a ban is imminent.

He doesn't need to drive to do his job so will not lose his job. He earns more than my earning potential so swapping roles isn't a viable option.

I will start job hunting tomorrow. I feel so massively vulnerable.

Parkermumma07 · 27/09/2020 13:19

It’s an obligatory ban and it works on a tier structure so he will likely get a lengthy ban due to him crashing his car as well as being over the limit.
He will get offered a course for drink drivers which will give him a 25% reduction.

Sorry that your going through to this, you have every right to be mad with him

Newkitchen123 · 27/09/2020 13:20

Not a chance would he be driving my car, broken wrist or not.
Bike sounds like only option

DowntonCrabby · 27/09/2020 13:20

He will lose it and so he should.

I don’t believe are any circumstances that should allow a drink driver to not receive at least a year’s ban. There needs to be a deterrent.

Flowers for you OP obviously none of it is your fault but you’ll have to deal with the fallout.

OhCaptain · 27/09/2020 13:20

Also, yes - how can he drive until his court date if his wrist is broken? Confused

Devlesko · 27/09/2020 13:20

as whatever consequences your dh faces, you face them too, and you’re not at fault.

Not unless she leaves the drunk potential murderer.
He'd be gone, no way would I support someone like this, he deserves to lose the lot, and OP let alone the kids deserve better than this low life.

Palavah · 27/09/2020 13:21

If he's broken his wrist then he won't be able to drive or cycle - he'll need to get a taxi/ lift somehow until it's healed.

Sorry you're going through this. Does he understand it's his fault? Does he have a dribking problem?

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 27/09/2020 13:21

His insurance after this will be huge and in some instances, he'll have to resit both parts of the driving exam again, with a longer, more expensive, practical/road component. I'd highly recommend you stop relying on this man for much of anything. Wouldn't sort his transport problems out, either.

Smallsteps88 · 27/09/2020 13:21

As well as all the arrangements that need to be made for work, he also needs to deal with his alcoholism.

FinallyFluid · 27/09/2020 13:22

I am sorry that he is putting you and your family through this.

I lost my childhood friend, the driver, and two rear seat passengers to a drink driving. They were all 19.

The fact that the driver died as well, was no comfort to me for long time.

berks · 27/09/2020 13:22

I have never seen him drink drive before. He went out last night and made a stupid decision to drive home- it would have been a 25 minute walk. As I said, this is all his fault.

His wrist isn't plastered just sore. Obviously he wouldn't drive if he's sick but he's not banned yet was my point.

OP posts:
Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 27/09/2020 13:23

He'll need to arrange lifts. It is possible to use an electric bike with a broken wrist.

FippertyGibbett · 27/09/2020 13:24

I suppose this shows that we should never be dependent on another person. We should always be able to keep ourselves and our children. If he had died in that crash you would have had to get a job and look after your DC.
InescapableDeath · 27/09/2020 13:24

Do you think he would be able to swerve suddenly if needed with a sore wrist? I know this is hard but he really shouldn’t drive with a broken wrist esp. with no protection!

Allywill · 27/09/2020 13:24

hardship is only applicable if you are a “totter” eg you get points that take you to 12 or over. it is not applicable in drink driving which is a mandatory ban e.g no exceptions. just a warning he should not consider driving whilst disqualified that is more often than not a custodial sentence.

TheShapeJaper · 27/09/2020 13:25

Thank god he was caught. He has probably done it loads of times and would have continued to do so. That’s one less dangerous driver off the roads.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 27/09/2020 13:25

Wow. You seriously think it's okay for this guy to still fucking drive around because he's not banned yet? FFS, zero sympathy for you. This is why the law needs to be changed and these twats jailed until their court date so their entitled arses don't get back on the fucking road!
