Colleague is blaming me for speeding fine

LivingLifeInPink · 27/09/2020 06:55

A few weeks ago I called a friend a colleague with a work related query and he answered while he was driving (handsfree). I didn't know he was driving - we work remotely at the moment.

A week later he received a speeding fine and he's looked at the call logs - it shows he was caught speeding 1 minute into our two minute phone call.

He is saying it's my fault as the call distracted him. It was a static speed camera, not a policeman - ie. the camera is always there and it's a route he takes every day.

I really don't think I'm responsible for his own mistakes.

I think you're responsible.

Thepilotlightsgoneout · 27/09/2020 06:57

I hope you laughed in his face.

Heygirlheyboy · 27/09/2020 06:57

Ridiculous.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 27/09/2020 06:57

he didnt have to answer the phone, while driving

Catnuzzle · 27/09/2020 06:58

You are not responsible. He shouldn't be taking calls whilst driving if they distract him.

Mariola321 · 27/09/2020 06:58

Tell him sorry for pushing on his right foot.

Kolsch · 27/09/2020 06:58

You're not responsible, of course not. Only the driver is responsible for their driving.

OlympicProcrastinator · 27/09/2020 06:59

What a cheeky git! No you are absolutely not responsible in any way.

He chose to get hands free.
He chose to answer the call.
He chose to continue the conversation despite driving.
He was the one driving.
You don’t have a crystal ball.

What an entitled wank stain. Tell him to jog on and pay his fine.

eurochick · 27/09/2020 06:59

Of course you are not. If he chooses to use a hands free kit that's up to him but he's still responsible for operating the car, not the person on the phone. If he can't drive properly while using it, he needs to bin the kit and not take calls whilst driving.

LakieLady · 27/09/2020 07:00

He's a dick.

If he's incapable of driving safely and legally while taking a call, he needs to turn his phone off while driving.

And he's being a shit trying to say it's your fault. Htf were you meant to know he was driving?

footprintsintheslow · 27/09/2020 07:02

I bet he's a nightmare in all aspects of his life. I bet he can't take responsibility for his actions and always finds someone to blame that isn't him. Laugh at him and don't apologise.

orangejuicer · 27/09/2020 07:03

You are not responsible. Don't give it another thought.

Cheeseandlobster · 27/09/2020 07:05

@HarryElephante

I think you're responsible.
Are you him? Only the driver is responsible
PelicanBill · 27/09/2020 07:06

Of course you aren’t responsible! He shouldn’t have answered the phone while driving. It is completely on him.

Aragog · 27/09/2020 07:07

He chose to answer the phone.
He chose to allow himself to become distracted.
It is his fault.

Sexnotgender · 27/09/2020 07:08

His choice to answer the phone. If he’s incapable of multitasking then he shouldn’t take calls whilst driving.

I wonder if he’d have blamed a man? Bet he wouldn’t have raised it.

Parkandride · 27/09/2020 07:09

Hilarious, of course you're not responsible.

Reminds me of when I was a graduate and accompanied a director on a trip. We stopped for lunch and he parked on double yellows and got a ticket. When the fine came through he appeared in my office to tell me the price and what my half would be! Hmm

Shooglywheel · 27/09/2020 07:11

This is where the phrase “Aye,right” with a raised eyebrow works well.

AllsortsofAwkward · 27/09/2020 07:11

Hes trying to pull a fast one and get you to pay the fine its his own fault.

makingmammaries · 27/09/2020 07:11

Ask him if he does this every time he gets a call while driving.

happinessischocolate · 27/09/2020 07:13

Tell him you agree and that he should reply to DVLA.with his reason and get them to send the fine to you 🤷‍♀️

0lapislazuli · 27/09/2020 07:17

“ he was caught speeding 1 minute into our two minute phone call. ”

Either he was already speeding, which is unlawful and he just got caught
Or
He sped up within one minute to a speed that was too fast? Who puts their foot down when they answer the phone? If he does, he shouldn’t be on the phone at all while driving.

No one to blame but himself.

toomanyspiderplants · 27/09/2020 07:19

He is a twat.

Gizlotsmum · 27/09/2020 07:21

I wouldn't have been able to stop myself laughing at the suggestion. You called but he answered, didn't say he couldn't talk because he was driving, obviously didn't pay enough attention and yet it's your fault?? Unless somehow the phone call caused his car to go faster (not his foot?!) in which case he probably needs to get the car checked...

MinesAPintOfTea · 27/09/2020 07:21

It would be a disciplinary offence for me to answer the phone whilst driving if on work time/work calls. So I don't...
