AIBU to worry about this

DD is taking antibiotics for an infection in an ear piercing that topical antibiotic cream didn’t cure. Obviously antibiotics lower your immune system, I was quite laidback about kids being back at school, but now my mind is racing that I’m sending her into school Monday with a lowered immune system in the middle of resurgence of coronavirus, now I’m thinking should I keep her at home?

Did the GP say you should?

Superpanicky · 27/09/2020 06:39

No he didn’t

I think you're being a bit OTT. Are you in an area with high infection rates?

Bagelsandbrie · 27/09/2020 07:57

Massively overreacting. The antibiotics will help to stop her developing a worse infection and clear the infection she has up - she doesn’t have a lower immune system with such a small infection. The risks of Covid will be the same.

I’m in the clinically vulnerable group- I have lupus, sjorgens, Addison’s, asthma etc etc - and even we’ve been told to crack on with it. (I’m being ultra cautious, I was originally in the shielding group).

Antibiotics don't lower the immune system; they fight a specific bacterial infection. Don't worry.

YABU. Don’t let your anxiety rule you.

SnuggyBuggy · 27/09/2020 08:04

How long is this course of antibiotics? I thought it was only very long term use that had an affect on the immune system.

In the nicest possible way, OP, I think YABU. I’m another anxious mum and I have to give my head a wobble regularly. Your DD will be fine and should be in school.

Superpanicky · 27/09/2020 08:19

Ok thanks for the responses, I’m just worried because it’s proven antibiotics wipe out your gut bacteria and it can take months to recover it to normal levels, so in that respect they absolutely do effect your immune system. But i know I can’t keep her off school for any length of time, I just can’t help feeling anxious about it.

Tons of people- like me- take daily long term antibiotics and don’t have any issues from it. I’ve been on them since I was 14, I’m now 40 and have no “gut bacteria” issues at all. Don’t believe everything you read....! If you’re really worried about it give her a good probiotic and a good multivitamin.
