To think I could be anonymous?

Posting for traffic in the hopes that the technologically inclined can helpBlush

I want to report something anonymously to a company, this can only be done via email or via their web form. However I don’t want to personally be identified, so I won’t supply any of my real details or email address. Do you think they would still link the complaint to my real account with them? IP address or device ID perhaps?

Basically the situation is important and should be reported, but it’s also embarrassing for me so I’d like to remain anonymous. They may check cctv so whilst they’d know what I look like (I look generic), I’d rather them not know exactly who I am as it is that embarrassing.

Yeah they could, go to an internet cafe further from home?
I mean theyd only do it if its serious enough. They may think it trivial or may want to trace... all depends on what it was but technically yes you could be identified.

Get a friend to send the report in?

motherofdxughters · 26/09/2020 21:10

Use a VPN or use someone else's device.

Use a throwaway email address.

A guy was prosecuted for signing someone up for loads of spam mail because one of the companies was able to track his IP through the sign up form.

Can you post a letter in?

There’s a huge difference in identifying someone via their IP address for malicious and harassing behaviour like your example and someone wanting to make a single anonymous complaint to a company like in the OP’s.

OP, create a new email account using protonmail. If you are that worried, you can also email them using a VPN or at an Internet cafe like someone else suggested but I personally wouldn’t bother because unless the complaint was really nasty and unfounded. Definitely email them though, rather than the web form.

CitizenFame · 26/09/2020 22:33

Oops, sorry, I misread this as you wanted to make a complaint rather than a report. I’d still give the same advice though.

Use a disposable email address and a VPN or a library computer.

anonaddy.com/ Is one disposable email provider or just create a yahoo address for the purpose.

Google anon email for other ideas.
