What is the most irrational thing you avoid doing

Light hearted thread and possibly TMI... I gave birth around 15 months ago and have since avoided tampons like the plague. Today I’m going swimming so have bit the bullet and used one and surprise surprise nothing to worry about!! Made me wonder what other things we avoid even though we know deep down it’ll be ok!

Picking up bunches of bananas in the supermarket in case there's a tarantula living in it

thenightsky · 27/09/2020 10:24

@MadameBlobby

I am fine with putting fuel in the car but hate putting air in the tyres. Last time I did it I was dithering and faffing so much the guy waiting behind me clearly lost patience and came and did mine for me
I was like that at petrol stations too and fumbled so much. However, I have bought myself one of these and I can now take my time and do it at home.
Aweebawbee · 27/09/2020 10:25

@Soundbyte

Going underwater in a swimming pool, still can’t shake a childhood fear that there are sharks behind the light portholes.
Well that really is silly. They're behind the drain grills.
Aweebawbee · 27/09/2020 10:31

@Guineapigbridge

Can't touch marshmallows. Won't pick them up in case they squeak.
I avoid buying anything packed in polystyrene for the same reason.
Imloosingmyshit · 27/09/2020 10:33

Answering my phone
Talking to my kids

Carrick27 · 27/09/2020 10:38

@ApolloandDaphne

I avoid touching balloons. I hate how they feel and smell and I jump so much if they pop. It's easy now my DDs are adults but when they were kids I used to slightly dread parties.
I’m with you in this one! Balloons make me cringe. I hate people blowing them up near me or kids playing with them. No idea why? Hmm
Mamabem · 27/09/2020 13:53

I HATE listening to voicemails. Hate it.

Graphista · 27/09/2020 13:57

Ha! The popping corks thing I probably should be afraid of as I have injured so many people, broken things it really isn't something I should do!

Bath I'm getting wary of getting in/out but that's because I am disabled I already have to empty the bath to be able to get out! So end up freezing! Pots makes me unsafe for showers.

The80sweregreat · 27/09/2020 15:41

I hate voicemails too as I always imagine bad news when mostly it's not or a wrong number or something trivial ! Not sure why I get so stressed out when I see one on my phone. Plus people tend to waffle more as well I find! ( including me !)

ilikebooksandplants · 27/09/2020 16:32

I hate brushing my teeth, even though I do it twice a day. I procrastinate forever about it, and it’s always the last step in my morning/evening routine because I hate hate hate doing it. I have no idea why I hate it so much but I do.

I hate sitting in any carriage that isn’t the very end (either end) of the tube. So much so that if those carriages are busy and I can’t squeeze in I’ll wait for the next one. My partner knows this and is happy to walk along the platform with me without even acknowledging it, but it can be a bit awkward with work colleagues etc who aren’t expecting a two mile walk to the end of the platform!

I'm exactly the same with mirrors.
We stayed in a lot she recently and there was a mirror on the bedroom wall. DH had to sellotape a pillowcase over it because I wouldn't go to bed otherwise!

romany4 · 27/09/2020 19:26

Should say stayed in a lodge!

AnneTwackie · 27/09/2020 19:33

I never read the Sunday papers on a Sunday. I like the ritual of buying them but if there’s bad things in there I’d rather read it around Thursday when it’s been sorted out.

Furbs · 27/09/2020 19:34

I cannot stir anything with a knife, that also include scrape in rounded motion. A lady once quoted "stir with a knife for trouble and strife" and it stuck with me. If all the teaspoons and forks at my work have disappeared, as they frequently do, I would rather go without coffee than stir with a knife.

firstimemamma · 27/09/2020 19:48

I won't light a candle in the evening if I'm home alone ever. I don't trust myself to check it's out which sounds mental I know.

keeprocking · 27/09/2020 20:29

Getting hair out of plug holes. It's the worst job in the world imo

Oh yes! I used the plunger on a slow running shower, thought I'd captured a rat when the hair-bomb was released!

Kolsch · 27/09/2020 20:33

The irrational thing I won't do?
Panic buy.

QuestionableMouse · 29/09/2020 14:34

@30under

I actively avoid stepping on a stair with a bannister pole attached. When I was growing up there was only one stair with bannister attached. Most staircases have more 🤦‍♀️
You'd be fine in my house, I think. My stairs are like these media.rightmove.co.uk/55k/54846/97763480/54846_AJP00020LON_IMG_06_0000.jpeg

I'm another who hates putting fuel in the car. I don't even know why but I hate doing it and it makes me grumpy.

JuiceyBetty · 29/09/2020 14:57

@kennelmaid

Unless I'm actually sweaty or mucky I hate getting a shower. I irrationally hate and avoid it. I like being IN the shower and I feel good afterwards, but it's the faff of getting towels, tying up hair, putting down a shower mat, getting water to temperature, getting undressed.
I came on here to say this!
Chocsandcrisps · 30/09/2020 09:23

Going to the post office to post items. I always leave it to the last minute when having to return stuff. Often don't bother returning items as I just can't face it!

PeggyBundy · 30/09/2020 09:37

I will sweep the kitchen floor so all the rubbish is in a neat pile but someone else has to get the dustpan and sweep up the pile.

BlusteryShowers · 30/09/2020 09:57

Checking my weight if I don't think I'll like the number.

I tell myself I'll watch the calories for a day or two and then weigh to mitigate it. In truth, i end up not weighing for a month and gaining 5lbs whereas if I had given myself a telling off after 2/3 lbs I would have less to lose 🤷‍♀️

formerbabe · 30/09/2020 14:03

@firstimemamma

I won't light a candle in the evening if I'm home alone ever. I don't trust myself to check it's out which sounds mental I know.
This is actually really sensible
flatlife · 30/09/2020 14:20

opening doors in public spaces. I even changed doctors to avoid a door!
I am scared it will be locked/ difficult to open one day and I will be humiliated.

user127819 · 30/09/2020 19:22

I don't know what milk tastes like because I've never drunk it alone, only in hot drinks or cooking. I drink rice milk, not because of any intolerance, but because I simply can't bear the smell or sight of cow's milk. I don't even like touching the bottle to use it for cooking.

Looking in a mirror with a window behind me. I'm afraid of seeing someone or something scary in the window. Somehow seeing it in the mirror is much worse than just seeing it in the window. I think this may have started with the bit in Home Alone when he sees the men reflected in the bauble.
