What is the most irrational thing you avoid doing

Light hearted thread and possibly TMI... I gave birth around 15 months ago and have since avoided tampons like the plague. Today I’m going swimming so have bit the bullet and used one and surprise surprise nothing to worry about!! Made me wonder what other things we avoid even though we know deep down it’ll be ok!

Playing cupboard drawer Tetris with pan lids. Irrational or not I won't bloody do it so DH does

The80sweregreat · 26/09/2020 12:12

Reversing into a car parking space in a car! I'll drive miles out of my way to be able to drive into a space.

Deadringer · 26/09/2020 12:20

Going to bed at night. I mean i do go eventually, but i keep putting it off until all hours, then i find it so hard to out of it in the morning because i am exhausted. It's ridiculous.

TheHoneyFactory · 26/09/2020 12:23

i hate going to collect post from the post office... post offices make me panicky - no idea why. i love online shopping but i make my DH collect the post. i will plan my week avoiding collection times (no home delivery for our post)
the post master is lovely so its completely irrational.

Parallel park.

Resist touching wood. I’ve trained myself out of saluting lone magpies, but not touching wood when tempting fate is a step too far.

Put shoes on a table.

Scratch the sole of my foot. I’m convinced I’ll take a chunk out. If I get an itch I have to run it on something rough.

Inhale helium to get the squeaky voice. I’m convinced I’ll instantly drop dead.

FastFood · 26/09/2020 12:35

Touching glassware which has been in the dishwasher. Can't touch it.

HMSSophie · 26/09/2020 12:56

Ooh yes walking on glass pavement slabs.

barkingmadmother · 26/09/2020 13:02

Putting petrol in! I hate it!

The80sweregreat · 26/09/2020 13:05

Most chores are annoying but changing the beds gives me the rage! I do them weekly , but I put it off on the day until I have run out of excuses not to! Then trying to dry them all in winter..

thebear1 · 26/09/2020 13:07

Collecting a parcel from a neighbour and filling the car with petrol. Hate both. Also get dh to book taxis and order takeaway, as I really hate doing either.

That's a thing. It's called Sleep/Bedtime Procrastination. You are not alone!

My one is filing. Flipping hate it. All my paperwork/vaguely opened envelopes lie around in bags.

LindaEllen · 26/09/2020 13:31

@JalapenoDave

I will not turn the TV or car radio up to volume 13. It has to be either 12 or 14.
SAME. DP puts it on 13 sometimes to annoy me, and I have to sit, seething, because to turn it up or down would be for him to win, and I can't have that! Wink

Yep same here, it's my quiet time and I just don't want it to end lol
insideoutsider · 26/09/2020 15:44

If I saw money on the ground, no matter how small or large, I will go around it the long way.
Where I grew up, if you went near or picked up lost money off the floor, you could turn into a goat and be used in ritual.

Yes, I know. I have many degrees, I have a good job, I live in the UK etc

waitingforautumn · 26/09/2020 15:51

@Guineapigbridge

Can't touch marshmallows. Won't pick them up in case they squeak.
Do you also avoid halloumi?😂
waitingforautumn · 26/09/2020 15:53

Refuse to have baths anywhere but home... I just can't do it!!!

Showers I'll have anywhere ofc but I feel icky in random baths.

Spodge · 26/09/2020 15:55

Driving (especially in the rain).

iloveautumn3 · 26/09/2020 16:02

Do not eat lollies as I can't bear the wooden stick at the end.

Titterofwit · 26/09/2020 16:06

I cant avoid it altogether but i put off going for a wee for as long as a I can.
I have no fear of loos and will happily use an outside toilet even with spiders possibly lurking if thats the only one available. I dont even need to go that often -probably about 5 times a day at the most.

But its the faff of trekking to the loo - away from Mumsnetting my important work .Upstairs , lock the door, pants down,do the business, pants up ,wash hands ,unlock door and downstairs again. Its just an annoyingly repetitive bodily function I would happily do without .
By the way I do know that there are folk who would give their eye teeth to be able to pop to a clean loo for a quick wee. This is just my own annoyance.

SecretWitch · 26/09/2020 16:12

I cannot sleep without at least a thin sheet on me because vampires and ghosts.

I also cannot get into an unmade bed. It offends my sensibilities which is really rich as I am a slob in every other way.

MJMG2015 · 26/09/2020 16:25

Normal thing I irrationally AVOID doing?

That's actually really tricky to answer. I think the things I do/don't do ARE rational...others may disagree 🤣

passthemustard · 26/09/2020 16:32

@Darkestseasonofall
Yep phone calls are a no for me too

Mamette · 26/09/2020 16:37

Many of these are not remotely irrational. I mean ironing, come on.

Scratch the sole of my foot. I’m convinced I’ll take a chunk out. If I get an itch I have to run it on something rough.

Shock I have this too although until now I have never crystallised the thought. Just avoided scratching the sole of my foot.

Animum2 · 26/09/2020 18:51

@soubriquet

I'm the same with 3 drains, actively go out of my way to avoid them!

Saracen · 26/09/2020 18:52

Getting up to use the loo in the night. I lie there awake for ages because I can't be bothered to get out of the warm cosy bed. It isn't as if the need for a wee is going to magically disappear if I wait!
