What is the most irrational thing you avoid doing

Light hearted thread and possibly TMI... I gave birth around 15 months ago and have since avoided tampons like the plague. Today I’m going swimming so have bit the bullet and used one and surprise surprise nothing to worry about!! Made me wonder what other things we avoid even though we know deep down it’ll be ok!

I cant ride roller coasters. Not because of height or speed but I have this fear that my hair will get caught somehow and I'll be scalped. I have short hair so the chances if it happening is 0 but I just cant shake it.

MrDarcysMa · 27/09/2020 04:41

@MolyHolyGuacamole

I can only brush my teeth using cold water, no matter how freezing it gets in the winter months. Rinsing my mouth with warm water makes my stomach turn,& could never do it in the shower.
Isn't this what everyone does? Confused
HeronLanyon · 27/09/2020 05:19

I am not superstitious generally but my ‘touch wood’ (not done that often) has developed.
For some reason around 5 years ago I ‘decided’ that when it really really mattered - ie when speaking of someone seriously ill or someone awaiting important exam or health results etc I needed to touch all 10 fingers on wood.
Cue mad two handed ‘touch woods’. Can’t shake it. And of course more and more things seem to warrant this as if the normal touch wood has been devalued.
Food- wise I have an irrational fear/hatred (goes beyond dislike) of
The mix of cheese and egg in most dishes. Not as blended ingredients (cheese muffin fine - cheeses omelette ok where they have mixed a bit) where they remain discrete I can’t do it like an egg and cheese sandwich or a poached egg with grated Parmesan on top etc just can’t do it. Feels ‘wrong’.
Similar with fresh fruit and cream. In fact cream is very wrong to me in most settings. No such problem with custard (although never eat it) or ice cream.

@FrenchtoEnglish

I have a friend who hates onions. He really hates them. Years ago, we went to the cinema to watch Blair Witch. There was a lot of hype around the film. I decided to buy a joke slimy eyeball to pass to him during the film (I was young and this was the level of my humour). Half way through, I passed it to him and he screamed really loudly: "What is it? What is it?" I whispered that it was an eyeball and he screamed: "Jesus! Thank Fuck! I thought it was a pickled onion!"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
accccc · 27/09/2020 05:47

My friend told me once if you are in a group and you 'split a pole' (e.g one of you goes one side of a lampost and the rest the other). You habe to say something that is a pair.

However for some reason I now do this when I split poles with strangers, and I say whatever my pair is three times (in my head).

Wheneverwhereve · 27/09/2020 07:09

Reading these has been an eye opener as I do quite a few of the things other posters have described also!

@FrenchtoEnglish the onion vs eyeball! 😂🤣😂

ComeOnGordon · 27/09/2020 07:38

I brush my teeth with warm water - I’ve got really sensitive teeth & the cold water troubles them.

MozzchopsThirty · 27/09/2020 07:41

I can't stand long dark hair, if I find one on my desk or even worse in a sink I have to use another sink, I don't like looking at them.
If I found one on my arm or something I would be on the ceiling

Tunnocks34 · 27/09/2020 07:45

I can’t cut raw meat.

30under · 27/09/2020 07:52

I actively avoid stepping on a stair with a bannister pole attached.
When I was growing up there was only one stair with bannister attached. Most staircases have more 🤦‍♀️

HeronLanyon · 27/09/2020 07:56

Bloody hell 30under I’d never be able to use stairs at all if I understand this correctly. My stairs have two bannister poles on each step. There’s be a lot of ripping out lovely old stairs and replacing with modern glass panel type affairs or just living in a bungalow if I caught that from you !?

Roystonv · 27/09/2020 08:02

Similar to another poster's dh I have to sit in certain seats in cafe, bar, restaurants etc. Mainly to do with not having people behind me, feel exposed/on edge otherwise. If can't avoid people then there will still be a seat at the table that will be 'safer' than others. Family indulge me. Showers for me too, never used to bother me but now what a drag they are.

Roystonv · 27/09/2020 08:07

Ooh another one. Get unsettled if there are a number of ways/turnings to go visit adult dc and Dh does not take the first one. Feels like we are driving past them/ leaving them behind if we go for 2nd option even if we get there at the same time.

Libertylee · 27/09/2020 08:12

Using other people’s toilets, popping corks on wine bottles and driving anywhere strange.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 27/09/2020 08:16

Give directions to people. I just can't do it, I completely blank the route out of my head when asked for help to get somewhere.

It's quite embarrassing and I have given strangers the wrong directions before just to get away from the conversation Blush

WinchesForFinches · 27/09/2020 08:47

I won’t blow up balloons. Evil.

Washimal · 27/09/2020 08:56

Putting petrol in! I hate it!

Me too! I have no idea why. It's not difficult and doesn't take long but for some reason but I just find it really stressful.

MadameBlobby · 27/09/2020 09:00

I haven’t had a bath for 3 years as the last time I had one I fell getting out and tore my cruciate ligament. But it’s an over bath shower we have and I of course still shower daily

yawnsvillex · 27/09/2020 09:02

Shopping and eating out at the moment

MadameBlobby · 27/09/2020 09:03

I am fine with putting fuel in the car but hate putting air in the tyres. Last time I did it I was dithering and faffing so much the guy waiting behind me clearly lost patience and came and did mine for me

SpecialWGM · 27/09/2020 09:52

@FarquarKumquatsmama

I don’t like turning right in the car and will try to go a way which means I don’t need to, even if it is longer.
That's insane. Do you just end up going around in circles? Is it a getting over thing? Nothing caused me more panic on my driving lessons (other than going 40) was moving over because I was scared people wouldn't let me in.
MolyHolyGuacamole · 27/09/2020 10:06

@oreshina

I don't sit on a public loo seat. I always squat/hover above it. Is that weird? My mum always put fresh loo roll round the seat for me to sit on and I've always done that is I absolutely have to do no 2 in a public place. I kind of don't want to do the laying the tissues on the seat for my kids, I don't want to pass this weird toilet issue to them! Is this really strange?
@oreshina this is EXACTLY me, my mum did the same thing! I was shocked in a discussion with work colleagues that everyone else sat on the seat 😂 I'll only sit on the seat on someone else's home, but not in the workplace or public toilet
MolyHolyGuacamole · 27/09/2020 10:10

Does anyone brush their teeth with warm water? I can't think of anything worse. I hate drinking warm water too, has to be ice cold!

This and similar views expressed makes me feel better. Yes I remember when I first moved here (from a much warmer climate) I was complaining about how much of a shock it was in the winter brushing my teeth with the freezing water, and got several replies of 'just brush your teeth in the shower!' And though oh no

MolyHolyGuacamole · 27/09/2020 10:13

@FrenchtoEnglish I thought it was a pickled onion!"

Made me laugh out loud 😂

MolyHolyGuacamole · 27/09/2020 10:17

@Libertylee

Using other people’s toilets, popping corks on wine bottles and driving anywhere strange.
Ooh this is me with corks on Prosecco/champagne. Convinced it will shift off like a bullet and maim my face. Oh hit the ceiling and cause it to come crashing in
