Are fancy cat foods worth the money?

My kitten is nearly old enough to start eating ‘Adult’ food so am thinking about which brand/type to start feeding her as there’s obviously so much choice.

I’m not interested in raw food etc. I’m talking about your normal cat food you can buy in pet shops and supermarkets Grin but even so, I’m bombarded with all the usual Whiskas, Felix, then you’ve got Sheba, Gourmet, Lily’s Kitchen and on to the fanciest looking ones like Royal Canin, Hills, James something etc.

I’m sure there’ll be some people waxing lyrical about how rubbish Whiskas and Felix is but my kitten has thrived on these normal brands!

Does buying a fancy cat food brand make a difference or are they all the same really?

What do you feed your cat?

They're such weirdos. Mine claims he can't chew chunks of food yet happily gums dreamies and munches his way through raw chicken wings Hmm

Ironfloor269 · 03/10/2020 16:24

Speaking of weirdos, Cuthbert has grown partial to a bit of yoghurt. Every night, when I eat yoghurt, he'd come and plonk himself next to me and look yearnigly. He won't eat if I put some yogurt on saucer. Oh no. I have to spoon feed it to him. If I don't, he'll sit closer and closer to me until he is on my lap and.inches away from my mouth!

Lol'ing at Cuthbert.

Pandora is a butter junkie (real butter only) If you have toast, a crumpet or a muffin she will come and sit next to you and do her begging face. Her begging face is very specific and actually quite unattractive. She shortens her neck right down flattens her ears and squints. She must feel this face looks extra lovely and in need of a bit of something with butter on it ?

It has to be a teeny tiny piece. It has to be placed directly in front of her feet. If it rolls a bit she wont have it. She beg for 2 but never 3 pieces.

Once she's had her 2 pieces she goes off in disgust with herself and grooms for ages.

AmandaHugenkiss · 03/10/2020 17:58

Scruffbag cat doesn’t even beg, he has no manners and just tries to dunk his face in my breakfast milk if I make the mistake of eating cereal on the couch rather than at the dining table.

Ironfloor269 · 03/10/2020 20:42

Aww I'm loving the little idiosyncrasies of these cats!

Two pieces of butter and never three, so specific.

Cuthbert loves to drink the milk from my overnight oats as well.

Whiskas pouches for the kittens with the dry food and lidl wet food for the cat with whiskas dry food. The kittens try to eat her food and the cat tries to eat theirs!!!

I have a absolute dust bin for a cat. When hes not eating Tesco's plastic bags or mangos. He will eat anything in front of him. We just get the Tesco's own stuff. My mums cat will only eat the best of the best and I changes every month so my cat gets the off casts.

Ironfloor269 · 03/10/2020 21:32

@dementedpixie what a beautiful coat Storm has. Is he a Maine Coon?

dementedpixie · 03/10/2020 21:44

@Ironfloor269, no he's just a moggy. They are both from the same litter of kittens, only 1 is short haired and the other long haired.

dementedpixie · 03/10/2020 21:49

I just found a kitten picture when they were 8 weeks old

Aldi blue poach dried , is nearly the same as purina one, my little one has a delicate tum, and this suits her fine

ifiwasascent · 03/10/2020 21:55

When we got our kitten he was being fed go cat so I brought loads of it. Then I went to pets at hone and they said it was like McDonald's so now he's on their Wainwright wet and dry and he loves it!

The balancing on the car door handle ShockGrin

Reminds me of my old short hair tortoise shell (19 when she died :( ) she used to get onto the top of the smallest fence posts, all four feet squished together and pretend to sit down and be comfy. I mean there's no way it was comfy - her bum wasn't even touching anything ...

they're funny aren't they?

Silverstreaks · 10/10/2020 18:12

When we got our monster cat he was fed on Felix and Go Cat. He had a massive greasy streak down his back, his mouth was in a bad state and he had feline acne around his mouth and chin. He was only two!

Now he's on Eden Holistic dried biscuits (80% meat) free fed and gets a pouch of stinky HiLife fish in the evening. He's fit as a fiddle, no more ailments and a magnificent coat.
