We rent a house from my parents and moved in just after lockdown. Haven’t had anyone over before.

Walls made of bloody cardboard and a chimney system like a rabbit warren for sound

Quite heated debates over rubbish (brexit) until 3am which I’m now thinking everyone would have heard

Woken up feeling like I can’t show my face. It was all obnoxious rubbish. Neighbours are friends with my folks. Do I apologise?

We’ve all been there 🤣

zigzagbetty · 26/09/2020 07:57

Just apologise if you need to, I imagine they slept through most of it otherwise wouldn't they have complained by 12am? As long as discussions weren't racist, defamatory etc then I wouldn't be panicking.

ScrapThatThen · 26/09/2020 08:01

Beer fear, let it settle first

orangejuicer · 26/09/2020 08:01

I'd say apologise - just because they didn't complain doesn't mean you didn't annoy the fuck out of them. They might have been fine with it and so you might have a friendly chat anyway.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh123 · 26/09/2020 08:03

I just can’t remember what sort of rubbish we were saying but one friend has opposing views and likes a rant

OP posts:
Shhhhhhhhhhhh123 · 26/09/2020 08:04

Yes they’re the sort of people to lie in bed and be annoyed as fuck but maybe not say anything

OP posts:
zigzagbetty · 26/09/2020 08:08

Then I would go round with a peace offering and apologise if only to reassure its not going to be a normal occurrence.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh123 · 26/09/2020 08:10

@ScrapThatThen

Yes the beerfear! Worst feeling ever

OP posts:
Tomatoesneedtoripen · 26/09/2020 08:19

it could have been worse!

RettyPriddle · 26/09/2020 08:24

Beer fear. But apologise, because it will make them realise you’re normal and reasonable, most of the time 😂

Yaottie · 26/09/2020 08:27

Just don't be so obnoxious in future

jessstan2 · 26/09/2020 08:31

You'd be surprised how deeply people sleep. If you were downstairs and your neighbours upstairs, they probably didn't hear much if at all. Anyway, you say it is the first time you've had visitors so it's hardly as f you are noisy all the time.

I lived somewhere that had fairly thin walls when first married, we were there a few years and had a child. I was very glad to move somewhere more private (and still live in my second house), but looking back it wasn't that bad.

You'll move eventually.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/09/2020 08:33

Suggest you say you were developing and acting out a script for a comedy sketch that you are thinking of sending in to the BBC. Wink

LoveBeingAMum555 · 26/09/2020 08:40

Well it cant be as bad as hearing my neighbours having very loud sex in their living room when we were trying to catch up on the Crown on Netflix at 9pm last night.

If you see them outside I would apologise but I wouldnt make a big thing out of it, I bet you werent as loud as you think.

AtrociousCircumstance · 26/09/2020 08:41

Definitely apologise. Otherwise they’ll be thinking that they’re going to have to be disturbed every weekend. Noisy, thoughtless neighbours make people ill with stress and confronting is hard.

Just say sorry and don’t worry from there.

Rocinante39 · 26/09/2020 08:52

Don't apologise unless they complain or you know them well/ they are friends.
Most neighbours want to be left alone and would find an apology intrusive. They wont want to have to apologise when they do something that annoys you.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh123 · 26/09/2020 08:56

I need to speak to then about an issue with our fence so might add ‘hope we didn’t keep you awake’ to the conversation

TheVanguardSix · 26/09/2020 08:59

I doubt your neighbours are upset about anyone's views. They probably just wanted you to STFU and go to sleep! Grin
Don't do the 3am ranting very often if you want to get along well with everyone, is my free advice.

LadyCatStark · 26/09/2020 09:01

Until 3am?? Yeah I’d be furious tbh.

TeddyIsaHe · 26/09/2020 09:02

Oh god dp and j were once having loud (wine-fuelled) sex in the sitting room one evening when Dd was at her dad’s. Next door banged on the wall!! Omg I’ve never gone from sexy to not in less time. I couldn’t look them in the eye.

Thankfully they moved a few weeks later (not due to my loud sex!!)

FredaFrogspawn · 26/09/2020 09:04

Make sure you let them know you’re really sorry, this kind of thing (ie how you treat neighbours) matters to you and that it’s not your normal way of behaving.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh123 · 26/09/2020 09:05

@LadyCatStark
Ironically I’m usually trying to be very quiet, tv on low, no loud music, light footed up the stairs.

Never apologise, never explain is my motto. Just carry on like nothing happened.

movingonup20 · 26/09/2020 09:08

The most important thing is not to make a habit of it. No reasonable neighbours minds the occasional party or late night drunken political debate but what annoys people is when it's every week or multiple times a week. My neighbours yell at each other multiple times a day, is take a one off brexit debate, is even come and join in!
