How long before DD gives in and wears them?

DD has been complaining its cold in class because of open and even wore her jumper today (almost unheard of)

I've bought her a couple of thermal vests - you'd think I was suggesting she coats herself in slime she was so disgusted.

She's 14 in year 10... do you reckon she'll give in and wear them if the windows are still open in late November or just come home complaining she's cold at school?

Sorry

YABU - she'll never give in she'd rather her teeth chattered and her hand froze to her pen

YANBU - she'll give in eventually

Did you buy her kiddie vests, or base layers?

ShaunaTheSheep · 25/09/2020 17:22

Can’t she just wear a t-shirt underneath?

cottonwoolbrain · 25/09/2020 17:24

Plain base layers one black, one white

Uch at 14 I would’ve been the same.

Just let her freeze and she’ll come to her senses soon enough

BigBreastedMumma · 25/09/2020 17:26

I'd like to think she'll give in as she's at risk of getting a cold in thr Winter months.
However, I was a stubborn 14yr old and wouldn't have worn them as I thought they were for "old people" haha

Hazelmazel · 25/09/2020 17:27

Given that the teens round here won’t even wear a coat when it’s minus degrees, I think she’ll just suffer the cold! Teens are a law unto themselves when it comes to temperature.

WisestIsShe · 25/09/2020 17:29

I've had the same discussion with my y9 today, after I read about it here. Apparently they don't have the windows open at her school!

TwizzledTurkey · 25/09/2020 17:29

Have you seen the teenagers who go out to clubs wearing the teeniest of dresses in thick snow in the winter? I’d say most teenagers would rather freeze than wear thermal vests

GunsAndShips · 25/09/2020 17:31

My DD is the exception to the rule. She wears what seems sensible for the temperature. She had on a raincoat and thermal vest today. She said her peers were blue, clinging to the radiator, teeth chattering and whinging and STILL called her a dork for wearing a coat. She says they're miserable and uncomfortable but fashionable and apparently, that's what's important to them.

SE13Mummy · 25/09/2020 17:31

She's 14; she doesn't want solutions, she wants to complain.

DD1 - who has always felt the cold - turned up at one lesson in Y7 with blue lips. Teacher assumed she'd been chewing a pen that had subsequently leaked but her reaction upon realising DD1 was blue because she was cold and not wearing her jumper was so horrified and worried that DD1 now wears her jumper at school so as to avoid distressing the teachers! She's in Y11 and the magic still works. If she complains of being cold, I'll mention the Y7 blue lips and am fairly confident those base layers will find themselves being worn.

Houseplanted · 25/09/2020 17:32

I was having this discussion with my 16 year old, she said she will have to wear thermals which surprised me but she’s already finding it too cold.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/09/2020 17:32

I'm from the north east, no way would I have worn them!

Florencex · 25/09/2020 17:33

YABU. She is old enough to chose her own clothes I think you should have asked her did she want some thermal vests.

domesticslattern · 25/09/2020 17:35

My DD eschews all vests, coats, scarves etc. I doubt yours will give in.
Doesn't stop them complaining though.Hmm

cottonwoolbrain · 25/09/2020 17:44

Oddly enough I don't worry about the idea of teenagers in tiny dresses wandering about in the snow - because they are moving about.

I have a feeling though that lots of them are about to discover that sitting still at a desk is a very different matter.

@Florencex you're right really I should have asked her. Still at least I'll have an answer when she complains "wear your vest then"

We used to wear T-shirt’s under our uniforms anyway, so you could take off your blouse and then you’d just be wearing black trousers and a normal T-shirt. Maybe kids will start doing that again

newtb · 25/09/2020 17:45

I had a new gaberdine mac in my first year.

I wore my blazer all year from my second year with a nylon mac crammed into 1 pocket to comply with the school rules. Mini skirt. Walked a mile uphill from the station to school. No vest. Wouldn't have worn one if you paid me. Because of the mac in my pocket pulling my blazer out of shape, I couldn't button it. Now and again used a brolly, but sometimes didn't due to the wind.

Played lacrosse 4 times without a jumper in an aertex shirt as didn't want to get my jumper sweaty.

We were awkward buggers.

Figbee · 25/09/2020 17:45

What are the vests like? Maybe a base layer would be better?

Zaphodsotherhead · 25/09/2020 17:48

They'd rather be cold than uncool.

Wait until winter really starts to bite. They may all change their tune. And if they don't - well, complaining about being cold won't get them anywhere, will it?

Kanaloa · 25/09/2020 17:49

I wouldn’t even wear a coat or jumper at school. No idea why - it just seemed deeply uncool. I think all you can do is provide the stuff then if there are any complaints say ‘put your coat/jumper/thermals on.’

RedskyAtnight · 25/09/2020 17:50

Sorry - I also have a 14 year old. She won't wear them. Ever.

You may have some luck with a plain T shirt under school shirt, but she'll need to lead this herself.

KrakowDawn · 25/09/2020 17:53

@SE13Mummy She's 14; she doesn't want solutions, she wants to complain

The truth in a nutshell. You're now my parenting guru!

spiderlight · 25/09/2020 17:54

I have a 13-year-old. I told him today that I'd ordered some thermal base layers for under his uniform. He flung his arms around me in gratitude. He must be a mutant! Grin

OpEd · 25/09/2020 17:56

I think I only appreciated correct layering in my 30s 🥶
