How long before DD gives in and wears them?

DD has been complaining its cold in class because of open and even wore her jumper today (almost unheard of)

I've bought her a couple of thermal vests - you'd think I was suggesting she coats herself in slime she was so disgusted.

She's 14 in year 10... do you reckon she'll give in and wear them if the windows are still open in late November or just come home complaining she's cold at school?

You've done your bit and have provided her with warm clothes. You can now sit back and smile smugly whenever she complains of being cold.

(My youngest is 14... This is not my first time round! 😂)

jessstan2 · 25/09/2020 18:02

She will not wear a vest at 14.

Maybe a fancy t shirt under her school shirt.

Jumpers, cardigans, etc, are fine.

You're lucky she stays in school, I'd have come home if I was freezing cold.

Bagadverts · 25/09/2020 18:02

Would it be noticeable to anyone else? Maybe this year will be slightly different- freezing at the bus stop for 10 mins to travel each way and at break is a bit different to being that cold all day in class.

mbosnz · 25/09/2020 18:04

If your daughter wears opaques, the fleecy lined ones you can get apparently are the clothing of the Gods in the British winter.

Afibtomyboy · 25/09/2020 18:04

She doesn’t like them and doesn’t want to wear them.

Fair enough, I’d take them backX

But I’d want her To be warm. So I’d say.... here’s your budget, have a look online and let me know if any Base layer or vest type out there that you would like.

You don’t waste money
You show to your daughter that you do listen to her

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 25/09/2020 18:05

Probably better if she just wears a normal top. Maybe not as warm as a thermal base layer but it might be more acceptable for a teen.

Bluntness100 · 25/09/2020 18:06

T shirt, yup, vest, nope. Because the other kids will take the piss that she’s dressed like a baby and wearing a vest.

She’d rather freeze to death than wear a vest. As would most 14 year olds. It’s friggen social suicide.

Nasty.
justasking111 · 25/09/2020 18:06

DS wore plain river island t shirts under his shirt a lot of them do because they are old draughty stone buildings or porta type ones which they have to move between outdoors between lessons never mind trying the heat the rooms they are in.

I would let her choose to be honest.

TicTac80 · 25/09/2020 18:06

I froze my butt off when I first came to the UK (I was 10...it was the summer...but I'm from the Middle East), so I've always dressed up like an eskimo!! I think it varies from child to child. My kids will wear base layers and the correct clothes for the climate. As a kid/teen, I just used to be amazed that my peers here didn't find it as cold as I did (I really thought I was going to die from the cold when I first got here!).

Knittedfairies · 25/09/2020 18:07

Your mistake was to call them vests.

yetanothernamitynamechange · 25/09/2020 18:08

Back in school we didnt have covid but we did have an eccentric teacher who would always open the windows even in winter as "its far too hot in here". I don't think it occurred to any of us to even wear our blazers even though we would moan to each other about the cold. So she may continue to resist, but will probably be fine. If she does moan to you about the cold though just point at the vests.

ivykaty44 · 25/09/2020 18:09

tell her not to moan as she can find her own solution if she doesn't like yours

Such an alien way to parent to me
chocolatespiders · 25/09/2020 18:12

My DD used to feel the cold. She had a thermal Blazer and often wore a vest or a long sleeve white tight Jersey top as an extra layer under her shirt.

Ellie56 · 25/09/2020 18:12

Thermal vests for a teenager! What were you thinking of! Grin Grin

FourPlasticRings · 25/09/2020 18:12

Would anyone else even see them? Most schools aren't doing PE at the moment, are they? And even if they are, she could just not wear one on PE day.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 25/09/2020 18:13

@Autumnleaves200

We used to wear T-shirt’s under our uniforms anyway, so you could take off your blouse and then you’d just be wearing black trousers and a normal T-shirt. Maybe kids will start doing that again
This is what we did when I was a teenager too, it also meant no one could see our bras through the thin white school shirts (I didn’t learn the trick of wearing a skin tone bra til I was surprisingly old!). You can buy thermals that are more like t shirts.
GazingAndGrazing · 25/09/2020 18:13

Come on, admit it, who has just googled fleece lined opaques and bought them Grin they are currently trending on TU

Bluntness100 · 25/09/2020 18:15

Op to clarify

Vests are what young kids wear. When they get older, they wear t shirts or bras or both.

Any kid running around in a vest after the age of eleven and below the age of sixteen is going to get the piss taken out of them something rotten. It’s like holding a sign up saying bully me now. I dress like an infant.

You may as well draw her a mono brow, get her some thick glasses, knock a few of her front teeth out and tell her to stop washing ans make sure she smells,

Because wearing a vest is going to have the same social impact.

EvenMoreChickens · 25/09/2020 18:15

I'm just amazed that people still think you can catch a cold by being cold. If anyone wants a quick primer about how viruses work let me know.

heidipi · 25/09/2020 18:16

I'm having horrible flashbacks to being sent to school in wellies in the snow. We got a bus from our village and of course there was never any snow in town so you'd get the piss taken for turning up in boots, oh there shame. Much better to slide to the bus stop in impractical shoes and have cold wet feet all day long.

Porcupineinwaiting · 25/09/2020 18:17

Another one who thinks it is your job to ensure appropriate clothing is available after which she can suit herself. My prediction is she'll wear it when she realises about 3/4 of her friends are already doing so.

It was raining before school here today. A good 80% have already caved and put coats on (secondary).

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/09/2020 18:17

My mother bought me a coat I hated.

I froze for three years rather than wear it (and winters were colder then with deep snow. I was soaking wet and frozen to the bone but neither of us would bend on the matter).

I hated that f*cking coat.

lyralalala · 25/09/2020 18:17

I'm amazed more schools haven't gone down the same road as the high school here. They've added plain black hoodies or plain black fleeces to their allowable uniform because a lot more windows are open.

Amusingly there now seems to be a competition between the kids who can have the cheapest hoodie that conforms to the 'plain' rule.

The primary school that DS and DD attend also told parents not to buy uniform before the summer. Instead they requested you get navy or black leggings, white or navy poloshirts and navy jumpers. That way they would be wearable clothes if schools weren't open again, and also easier for kids to deal with on PE days. That's their uniform until January at least.
