How long before DD gives in and wears them?

DD has been complaining its cold in class because of open and even wore her jumper today (almost unheard of)

I've bought her a couple of thermal vests - you'd think I was suggesting she coats herself in slime she was so disgusted.

She's 14 in year 10... do you reckon she'll give in and wear them if the windows are still open in late November or just come home complaining she's cold at school?
I recommend a thin merino sweater under her school jumper. It is basically an invisible extra layer if you get it in the right colour/fit. Uniqlo has some good stuff: www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/women/knitwear/jumpers-cardigans/extra-fine-merino-jumpers-cardigans
Those are great, our kids wore thermal vests in high school (Scotland) baltic up here.
Also recommend merino socks nobody sees them look like regular socks. A big difference if feet are warm.

Sally872 · 25/09/2020 19:46

If anyone else deemed cool enough starts wearing base layers they all will!

LittleEsme · 25/09/2020 19:48

Just call them 'skins'.

My DD's happily wear skins Wink

BruceAndNosh · 25/09/2020 19:51

Your big mistake was calling it a vest.

I wear a "camisole" all winter.
It is not a vest

SBTLove · 25/09/2020 19:52

@MitziK
Very on trend 😁

topcat2014 · 25/09/2020 20:25

DD(13) will go to school with blue legs, just blazer, no coat.
I leave her to it..

SoupDragon · 25/09/2020 20:28

Nasty.

What are you on about @Bluntness100

midnightstar66 · 25/09/2020 20:31

I doubt she'll wear them if she's decided against it. Dd is 10 and hasn't work anything on her legs for 2 years now. She's constantly in shorts year round and we are east coast Scotland so it's pretty nippy!

SoupDragon · 25/09/2020 20:31

Such an alien way to parent to me

You don't provide your children with the means to keep warm then? How weird.

Dear god, some people have clearly lost the ability to spot lightheartedness 🙄 I despair, I really do.

reluctantbrit · 25/09/2020 20:38

@Prokupatuscrakedatus

I answered she'll come round. But I am in Germany and "Du musst die Nieren warm halten, Kind!" (You need to keep your kidneys warm, child!) is a message that is handed down through the generations.
I am German as well and know that sentence by heart.

My mum would die when she would see DD in skimpy T-shirts.

Cocolapew · 25/09/2020 20:40

I love at vest, preferably tucked into my knickers Grin
I'm 51 and have always wore one.
I'm going to have to invest in a thermal one though, I work in a school and it's like being in a bloody wind tunnel.

BlueCookieMonster · 25/09/2020 20:47

Perhaps suggest fleecy tights if she wears them? I don’t actually remember feeling cold at school. Don’t actually remember wearing a coat much either.

Kazakaren · 25/09/2020 20:53

Yep, I suggested to my 13 year old that I get her some and she was delighted.

Jessi1972 · 25/09/2020 20:54

When my DD was at school I just brought some plain white thermal vests then decorated them with a few sew on gems then popped them in with her clean washing.
At first I got 'the face' and they were left at the bottom of her wardrobe - or so I thought!
Unbeknownst to me, as the weather got colder she had started wearing them and her friends had seen them.
They all wanted them and I spent my evenings sewing on gems - I charged £1 a shirt, DD started to help and we made enough to buy her summer uniform the following year 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Bluntness100 · 25/09/2020 21:15

There is a big difference between base layers, which is basically a t shirt, and a base layer, which is a vest that a seven year old

She isn’t getting over it.

Return them op. Buy her a t shirt, or a camisole, with thin straps and pretty lace. She isn’t going to wear a vest that little kids wear. No matter how many folks think she should or that you should make her freeze and force her.

Have some empathy. You were once fourteen. Ask her what she wants and get her something she wishes to wear. Ask her opinion. She’s fourteen not four

It sure about that !!! He may be warm to cuddle up to but he’s a messy bugger Grin

LindaEllen · 25/09/2020 21:45

She might be stubborn enough to just be cold, but the important thing is you know you've given her something to mean she doesn't HAVE to be cold. It's all you can do really! You can't force it on her, however much it makes sense for her to wear them!

It's all you can do really

Eh! She can ask her daughters opinion on what she would wear, return what she has, and buy a base layer that is not something a seven year old would wear.

All she can do is certainly not buying her vests and shouting fuck you, freeze, I’ve done my best,

Nat6999 · 25/09/2020 22:40

I've had numerous phone calls from ds head of year that it is below freezing & he has arrived at school in a polo shirt with no coat. I offered to bring the coat I bought him & he refused to wear in to show her, she soon stopped ringing.

Cocolapew · 25/09/2020 22:43

Vests aren't just for seven year olds Confused I call base layers vests because base layer sounds wanky.
