Police scanning cars in a retail park to make sure shoppers are local

It's started.

South Wales police present in a retail/supermarket car park are scanning cars to make sure that people aren't shopping there from outside the area!

Coming soon to a supermarket near you no doubt!

Shock surely not?!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 24/09/2020 20:53

I know i could google but how are they defining area

SomewhereEast · 24/09/2020 20:54

Source? There is currently no legal basis for that whatsoever that I can think of.

SachaStark · 24/09/2020 20:55

I live in a very touristy, beach area. The local police here were scanning cars in car parks near to the beach during the first lockdown.

unmarkedbythat · 24/09/2020 20:55

What are the current restrictions in Wales?

FlyingFlamingo · 24/09/2020 20:56

Good. I’ve heard too many stories of people in lockdown areas travelling to other areas to shop (and I say that as someone living in an amber area expecting to be under local restrictions in the next few days), the lockdown areas in South Wales all have decently sized towns within them, there is no need to go elsewhere to shop

Whammyyammy · 24/09/2020 20:56

Just tell them your testing your eyesight! If they present you with a fine take it to court and say the same.
Cant see you getting a fine then....

OrigamiOwl · 24/09/2020 20:56

What is your source for this?

caroloro · 24/09/2020 20:57

@SomewhereEast there is in South Wales. People are not allowed to travel outside of their borough if their borough is in local lock down , and you're not allowed in if you dont live there.

Dreamersandwishers · 24/09/2020 20:58

Really? That’s the most important thing they could be doing? Beggars belief.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 24/09/2020 21:00

Sounds like South Wales Police - they do have a tendency to over reach. Iirc they recently got told that their automatic facial recognition system in Cardiff was not lawful - that it infringed upon a person's right to not be monitored in this way when minding their own business.

halcyondays · 24/09/2020 21:01

If this is to enforce local lockdowns, I can’t see the issue tbh.

FlyingFlamingo · 24/09/2020 21:01

Well yes, I would argue that limiting the spread of a pandemic from areas of high incidence to areas of low incidence is fairly important. There is no point in locking areas down if no one is monitoring it!

caroloro · 24/09/2020 21:01

@OrigamiOwl Gwent police are posting on their FB pages about it. They are actively and proudly "

ChibiTotoro · 24/09/2020 21:02

Did you ask them yourself what they were doing?

Weedsnseeds1 · 24/09/2020 21:03

I had some perfectly legitimate work in Wales back in June and was followed for 20 miles by police (I live in England), no indication for me to pull over, but trailed me up hill and down Dale, until I pulled into the factory, when they u-turned and drove off.
So I believe you OP!

SoloMummy · 24/09/2020 21:03

Sounds like they're being proactive and something there English counterparts could learn from.

Bluewavescrashing · 24/09/2020 21:04

This is a local town for local people. There's nothing for you here.

We didn't burn him!

I can I can't?!

One, two, twelvety...

BeaverTail · 24/09/2020 21:04

Good.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 24/09/2020 21:04

Also this system is impossible to monitor properly. What about people who live in a locked down area but drive work cars which are leased and registered to a business which isn't in that area. Or people who live outside a lockdown area driving their kids to school and stopping at Asda to get petrol.

Good about time people stopped doing whatever the hell they want and followed instructions for a change

Natsel84 · 24/09/2020 21:09

I'm in one of the towns in lockdown in south Wales, you cant leave your town unless it's for work , school or medical reasons .

The police have been stopping people to see where you are going , if you haven't got a food enough reason , they send you back.

Although I haven't heard of them scanning cars in supermarkets yet ..

Natsel84 · 24/09/2020 21:10

*good enough reason

LocalLockdowner · 24/09/2020 21:11

If its in one of the local lockdown boroughs or counties then they are ensuring that people are sticking within their area. What's the issue??

I'm doing my best yo stay within my shite area when all my friends live in a neighbouring ate that's not in l9ckdiwn. Basically I won't see anyone other than my husband (who I'm in process of seperating) so if other people are fucking off where ever they fancy it be a bit peeved. I'm basically on my own in a place where I know no one.

I'm not aware of any lockdown area on South Wales that does not have supermarkets for locals to use.
