Police scanning cars in a retail park to make sure shoppers are local

It's started.

South Wales police present in a retail/supermarket car park are scanning cars to make sure that people aren't shopping there from outside the area!

Coming soon to a supermarket near you no doubt!

@FlyingFlamingo

Well yes, I would argue that limiting the spread of a pandemic from areas of high incidence to areas of low incidence is fairly important. There is no point in locking areas down if no one is monitoring it!
I live in an area of low incidence & I still don't want coppers scanning cars down the local Tesco thanks. If we're like this in September, with confirmed cases at 6-7k out of a population of 66 million, it'll be hysterical madness by January.
FlyingFlamingo · 24/09/2020 21:20

Why not? It’s to protect you and the vulnerable people in your community, I really don’t see the issue

00100001 · 24/09/2020 21:39

But surely, all that tells you is where the registered keeper of the car lives? Confused

What if I bought a car for my Auntie and she lives in Wales, and I live in London. and I'm the registered keeper, and she's just driving it?

caroloro · 24/09/2020 21:49

It's not 6-7000 though, it's 6-7000 new infections a day, and rising. Im happy to live in Wales. Its reassuring that our government has been so much more cautious rhan the English government.

Moat people aren't driving around by cars legally owned by someone else.

Made up scenarios aren't actually helpful.

I'm in a town which has gone from hardly any cases to figures which, if extrapolated to the wider population, could mean 1in7 people have covid. It's right that they think about the risk of spreading in virus vs the benefit of going shopping wherever they want. It's unfortunate that people will not do the right thing without police intervention.

CasperGutman · 24/09/2020 22:01

The registered keeper and the owner of a car don't have to be the same person. You can own a car someone else uses regularly, but if they keep it and use it most, they should be the registered keeper so that e.g. speeding and parking tickets go to the right person. This is why the V5C registration document is not proof of ownership.

CasperGutman · 24/09/2020 22:03

Apparently South Wales Police had set up a roadblock on the road from Newport to Cardiff too, to check people had a reasonable excuse for their journey.

DellaDoo · 24/09/2020 22:10

But even in restricted areas, you can go away on holiday ?

Doesn’t make sense at all.

FlyingFlamingo · 24/09/2020 22:12

Not in Wales you can’t

killerofmen · 24/09/2020 22:13

You can't go on holiday if your area is under restrictions on Wales. You cannot leave the area without a reasonable excuse.

No you cant , no holidays allowed

Yes this happened too
missmouse101 · 24/09/2020 22:20

Good, I'm glad they are.

Landlockedinlockdown · 24/09/2020 22:57

There is a small village that falls on the boundary of two locked down council areas. A river runs through the village and cuts one part as one council and 7 streets as another.
This village has one way in and out and the poor people in those 7 streets are land-locked by the other council area and a massive mountain with no roads. There is no local shop or post office servicing this area and the residents have been told that they are not allowed to shop in the local store if they have crossed the border. Instead, they are expected to drive out of the valley, past the shop and 10 minutes in the opposite direction to get back into a council area where they are allowed to shop.
The best bit is that, if these residents don’t drive, the only bus going in the direction they need leaves from the council across the border and they would have to break the law to catch the bus. They can nip to the pub for a pint but can’t go for a walk more than 500m or get a pint of milk in the shop.
Fucking ludicrous!

Jakey056 · 24/09/2020 23:00

I watch with amazement as people give up on their rights for half baked illogical fluff with no scientific basis. Lockdowns don't work. And no I am not a tinfoil hat wearer. There is only one way to come through this and thats shielding vulnerable and being sensible. Police checking cars in shopping centres. Christ.

Redglitter · 24/09/2020 23:06

Well in that highly unlikely scenario 🙄
Youd explain that to them when they speak to you

picklemewalnuts · 24/09/2020 23:09

I'm in one of those areas helping my 80yr old mother move house. When I come to leave the area in a few days, I'll be explaining that my very good reason for leaving the area is to get home!

If I wasn't so desperately needed, I'd have used the lockdown as an excuse not to come, as I would rather be anywhere else right now!

betrayedandwobbly · 24/09/2020 23:10

Wales has been using the police to check movements ever since March.

Not realtime ANPR, the old fashioned way of strapping cars and talking to the occupants

betrayedandwobbly · 24/09/2020 23:10

*stopping

Hoppyhops · 24/09/2020 23:27

@NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 I’m in S Wales and I’m sure I saw this at my local retail park yesterday. Meant to ask about it then completely forgot! Did you see it happening and was it at CRP?

HeIenaDove · 24/09/2020 23:29

@Landlockedinlockdown That is off the charts stupid.

caroloro · 24/09/2020 23:31

No. You can't. Not in Wales. If you're in a locked down area, you cant travel out of tour borough, and people cant travel in, without a good reason (work, school, appointment, care giving).

SheepandCow · 24/09/2020 23:31

What happens if the outside of area people say they're protesting about something? Protests, even very large ones, are currently still allowed.

SheepandCow · 24/09/2020 23:32

Actually sorry. I don't know if the rules around protests are different in Wales?
