My daughter has just popped to Tesco for a couple of bits and pieces. She’s just sent me a photo of the pasta aisle. The shelves are bare!!
Surely, we’re not having to go through that again. Not being being able to buy a packet of pasta or toilet roll because some people are filling their garages to the rafters with the stuff.
Seriously, there’s no need!!

Ocado seem to be OK for pasta, I added a pack of 55p penne to Saturdays delivery. Just one, it will get eaten within 10 days not stockpiled!

What most of you fail to realise is this is all it takes. Very few people are "filling their lofts to the rafters" and few did last time. Stop hating each other and research how supply chain to supermarkets works in the U.K

SentientAndCognisant · 24/09/2020 21:23

No. Threads don’t cause panic.only those with a propensity to panic panic
Because they would panic anyhoo
No, I don’t immediately think Better get some beans,Andrew because of a thread

If mumsnet threads had a direct impact on behaviours and buying everyone would be cooking ham in Pepsi and using touché eclat foundation

Darkdecent · 24/09/2020 21:25

I'm a delivery driver. We had lots of big packs of toilet rolls to deliver yesterday.

SentientAndCognisant · 24/09/2020 21:26

Interesting, so are you delivering more toilet rolls?

DreamingofGinoclock · 24/09/2020 21:27

@00100001

There was some one in my local FB page had bought 4 trolleys full of nappies. Yes. 4 entire large trolleys filled to the brim with nappies.

The supermarket let them, so who's to blame? 🤷‍♀️

This is hilarious the baby will outgrow those before they are all used Hmm
pointythings · 24/09/2020 21:28

I was in Tesco today and there was lots of everything. ASDA last week had bare pasta shelves, but has been like that for weeks and that branch is notoriously bad at managing stock.

But I agree, all this is going to get much worse in a No Deal Brexit scenario. I do have a loo roll subscription though.

Byallmeans · 24/09/2020 21:28

@JaniceBattersby

Thing is though, it’s not about people buying trolley fulls of stuff. If ever person just buys one extra packet of toilet roll and one extra packet of pasta then factories have double their production with no notice. Before we know it, everything runs out very quickly.
This.
lyralalala · 24/09/2020 21:29

Something has gone very wrong with the picking at my local supermarket for delivery. My delivery today was full of utterly bizarre subs.

Unsure33 · 24/09/2020 21:30

Yep and the media are fuelling it.

Rinoachicken · 24/09/2020 21:31

@DreamingofGinoclock

Perhaps they intend to sell them at a high price to desperate mothers in a few weeks, who haven’t been able to buy any because people like these have sensed a chance to make a quick £££ and bought them all up 😡

Biker47 · 24/09/2020 21:31

Panic buying toilet paper is stupid, especially in this country. Majority of the toilet paper sold in the UK, is made in the UK. Making toilet paper is a heavy industry which rarely stops production, they run the factories constantly, and never stopped during the whole time here, the truck drivers have still been at work delivering them to shops, and the shops have literally never closed during the pandemic, there was never any chance of supermarkets running out of toilet roll naturally.
The dickheads who panic bought the first time, have been using their stockpile for months, now need to restock it apparently.

If you know someone who has done it, tell them we make toilet paper here, we're not reliant on Chinese toilet paper factories, the likes of which were actually shut down during the pandemic, other countries who are reliant on imported toilet paper were the ones who panic bought it at the start, and probably influenced people buying it here.

That's very extreme. For the supermarket to allow it I bet there was a reason, like a pre-organised shopping trip for a baby bank or Women's Aid or food bank.
WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 24/09/2020 21:32

Loads of toilet rolls on Amazon, lots of other stuff also

Pjmask is right. I found myself thinking that I didn’t want to get caught out like last time so perhaps I’ll buy some toilet roll tomorrow. Then DH said I’m just as bad as everyone else, so I won’t. This is all it takes though. Most people buying just one more packet and then blaming all the other idiots when they can’t restock shelves quick enough (PS we never ran out of stocks, it just couldn’t get back onto shelves quick enough).
slipperywhensparticus · 24/09/2020 21:36

The four trolleys of nappies person is probably going to flog them on facebook

RoysFrankenstein · 24/09/2020 21:38

Threads like this are part of the problem though. The DM started off with their 'shelves running bare' shit, then those who read it (and are that way inclined) buy more and then share it, tell a friend, start a thread. Then the people who've heard it 2nd hand (and are that way inclined) buy more, tell a friend about the shortages, start a thread and it goes on and on. If anything, Brexit IS the one to worry about but there isn't the scare mongering around that now with all this going on.
Panic buying is stupid, keeping your freezer/ cupboards/ toiletries as well stocked as you can afford, taking advantage of bogof or half price deals all year round is sensible.

DreamingofGinoclock · 24/09/2020 21:39

Oh no I bet you are right this is awful Angry....last time round I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get formula for my baby ...luckily we have always kept a couple of spare tubs / we have the means to be able to check different shops ...but I feel awful for those parents how couldn't just pop in their cars to check different shops

00100001 · 24/09/2020 21:39

@slipperywhensparticus

Yes. Or FB consensus is they're going to sell them in if there's a shortage!
pussycatinboots · 24/09/2020 21:40

@chunkyrun

I went shopping today and Morrisons was fine. In the north west
So did I (also in NWest) plenty of stock...but

The supervisor was lecturing all the till staff that they were only allowed to sell a max of 3 of pasta, loo rolls, tinned stuff, cleaning products, bleach etc. if you have 3 different brands that is still 3 so you can't sneak 3 own brand and 3 branded through as the till had been programmed to prevent it.

No idea if it did, as we only had fresh veg, bread etc.
🤷🏻‍♀️

Howmanysleepsnow · 24/09/2020 21:41

I’ll admit it: I bought extra toilet rolls last time (36 extra to be precise). And cupboard stuff- cereal, tins, pasta. I even froze 6l of milk and 4 loaves of bread.
And, guess what? I needed it. DH caught Covid (including gastric symptoms) followed by secondary bacterial pneumonia. I couldn’t leave the house for 5 weeks and had us plus 4dc to feed. Despite being on the shielding list, we couldn’t get a delivery for the entire time. Nearest friends/ family were an hour away and also shielding. No food boxes available locally either.
Sometime you have to be able to rely on yourself. I honestly don’t want to think about what would have happened if I’d not had something in reserve.

Longdistance · 24/09/2020 21:43

The supermarkets are a bunch of greedy fuckers for letting people buy all this shit. They don’t really give a crap as long as the money’s in the till.

LouHotel · 24/09/2020 21:43

It's about your emotional state, this isn't about lockdown this about people living under the uncertainty of not having enough to feed their family because they've lost their jobs.

People panic buy toilet roll because it symbolise control over your basic need, I honestly dont think people can control this as it's a modern day version of hunter gatherer.

Someone buying 4 loads of nappies could very well be looking at redundancy and this there way of coping by thinking at least they can make sure their baby is dry.

RedCyclamens · 24/09/2020 21:44

@Brighterthansunflowers

Well threads like this and being horrified on social media just adds fuel to the fire because people think there’s shortages so better stock up, thereby adding to the problem.
Yes completely agree with this
