Just that really, it's such a lot of money per month. When you think what else that money could be spent on. Can't wait til it's paid off. Anyone else feel like this?

@BabyLlamaZen

Don't you think it's exciting you're paying off your own home and you'll earn money from it?

House prices can go down as well as up.

But it is great to have security of owning a house. Especially in old age.

It's an investment for you. Think of people paying the same amount or more in rent. Have some sensitivity.

Our rent is £3,000 a month. Be lucky you have an asset.

Well yes! you don't have to live that close tro London home counties some round our way are that sort of rent, but people carry on renting them suppose a company is he behind it somewhere!

Nope. I feel incredibly lucky. Only 10 years ago I thought I would never be in this position.

It is a pain but in time it will seem like far less than now, honestly. Everything else will go up, including salaries, but mortgage won't.

Nope. Not any more. It's great Grin

Not half as bored as I was with spending 40% more each month on rent.

Wow 😮 Proudboomer. I am speechless.

OP it is great when it is finished though. We finished ours last October. I still have a joint mortgage with DS2 about three years left. Not worth paying it off.

To those that feel sad that they can’t afford a property of their own have you considered either moving north or buying a property in the north and renting it out. Property here is so much cheaper. You can pick up a run down property for about £50,000 or a good three bedroom house for £100,000 - £180,000 in a quite good area. Some villages are cheap some much more expensive but certainly a lot cheaper than the south. Obviously wages are not as good up here but quality of life can be very good. At least you might have something to sell later or move into on retirement.
I used some money left to me for a 20 % ( and savings)and DS2 & fDS3 & I have paid it off. DS2 had a succession of lodgers in then bought another house and DS3 likes living on his own so we have no lodgers ( which would help) in it now. I am a TA so not a huge wage but I manage.

We aren’t all in London you know! Grin

I’m already north. In Ireland.

How did you get a mortgage as a single parent on a low income with next to no deposit? (Because you can’t save because your rent is so high)

Oh, I see you were left money. Problem solved then. I shall tell someone to just leave me some money. Grin

I don't have one at the moment, but can remember paying at 17.5% APR. No, we weren't a bad credit risk, just standard variable rate, quoted at 16%, but because they charged interest for the whole year on the balance due on 1st Jan, the APR was higher.

Still, beer was only 25p/pint Grin

I wish my rent was 3k.
Mine is 5k.

I can't afford to buy a house where I live (nor do I want to) so I am renting instead. To make up for it I have a mortgage on a house in a cheaper area as an investment.

This is how I feel whenever my husband tells me he’s booked the car in for a service/MOT Grin

Yes I know it’s necessary but omg it’s such a fucking boring waste of money.

I think rents should be capped at what the mortgage would be with a 20% deposit. It’s outrageous that people who could afford the property they live in if they just had the luck of a deposit basically buy houses for people who own them already. Disgusting.

Brighterthansunflowers · 24/09/2020 20:55

Yawn.

Plenty of people pay more to rent than a mortgage would cost but because of that they can’t save a deposit. I’m not just talking about London prices either. So yeah, not got much sympathy that you’re bored of paying your mortgage. If it’s that dull try renting instead.

Yeah but you get a nice house to live in which is pretty important to life....

Not bored, but sometimes wished we’d brought a cheaper house, so we’d have more disposable income.

Three more £330 payments then we own our £460k house

Could just settle it tomorrow but there is no point with rates so low.

In fact they are so low we will probably remortgage and borrow against the house to buy some nice toys.

I am struggling to think of better things to spend money on than having a roof over your head. It's not like you'd be paying less in rent after all

It is not crazy to long for freedom for a mortgage. At least my generation (Millennials) can generally hope to pay it off in our lifetime and enjoy a mortgage-free retirement. I am not so sure my dcs' generation will be able to, assuming they manage to put down the mortgage deposit in the first place.

Mortgage paid off - so no longer boring.
Water rates are another matter. If Oxfam can do water for a whole village for £2 a month, why am I paying a King's ransom to Anglian Water for one house with water butts and a septic tank?

It didn't take long for the usual competition to the bottom to start hmm

It's not insensitive to be gutted to see how much money is wasted on interest and home maintenance. If you were wealthy, you'd pay it cash!

But it's not a race to the bottom. It's just basically stupid. You're either paying out a lot on a mortgage, rent or you're homeless. Take your pick. Hmm I don't see how anyone can complain about it being boring and annoying to be paying money for a house. Just ignore it, it's necessary, it's that or you're homeless.

Lol if you're that bored OP why not stop paying for a couple of months? See how exciting that gets?

I'm fed up of paying for all the 'boring' but necessary things! Somehow I do feel a bit miffed that most of my money goes on housing/gas/electricity/water/food/internet etc., but then I suppose isn't that the point of earning money - so you can spend it? It would nicer if all the basics were free and my salary was just pocket money to spend on extras, but sadly that's not the case.
