Schools will be keeping windows and doors open throughout autumn and winter as per gov guidelines re Covid-19.
Today primary aged children complained it was cold. It’s still September so this is your ‘heads up!’

What a good idea, I think I'll do this as an adult in my office Grin

marmite79 · 24/09/2020 19:03

Oh god. Not heard of it here. I mean the idea is good in theory but it'll be so cold and surely a waste of energy if will still use the heating??

My daughter really feels the cold too!!

mineofuselessinformation · 24/09/2020 19:05

@marmite79 some schools / rooms may be able to use heating, but many will not if they have the old-fashioned blown air heaters or air con. Neither are allowed.

Oh I see. Tbf I don't know much about but I do know my local authority control the schools heating not the actual school.. Worrying me now how cold it'll be

Think I'll stock up on vests and tights now!!

Callipygion · 24/09/2020 19:20

Don’t schools/offices have to close if temp falls below 17 degrees or something?

Postmanbear · 24/09/2020 19:22

The rule about temperature requirements do not apply in school.
I sat in my coat today (as a teacher) as it is like being outside!

lachy · 24/09/2020 19:23

Good idea.

Might get some more for me too.

Bluewavescrashing · 24/09/2020 19:30

Ahahaha.

I used to teach in a Victoria, very poorly maintained school. The boiler would regularly break down and we'd be shivering in our coats and gloves. Nine degrees. There is no legal minimum temperature.

Luckily my classroom this year is extremely warm as it's above the school boiler (different, very modern school!)

Sh05 · 24/09/2020 19:33

Good idea.
It's worse for those sitting towards the back of the class/ closest the windows. My daughters 14 always sits near the front and says those at the back freeze whilst those at the front just have chilly toes.
They are allowed to keep their coats and any woollies on as well though unless it's a practical lesson like science or dt. I've got her fleece bed socks to wear inside her boots

Bluewavescrashing · 24/09/2020 19:33

Victoria = Victorian.

mineofuselessinformation · 24/09/2020 19:34

Tights are a great idea - wear under trousers, or even double up pairs. (This also works if you have holes in both pairs and don't want them to show as they rarely line up, so dc2 informed me! Grin)

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/09/2020 19:45

Save your money! Smile
We've got Gobal Warming now! Hmm

PaxMalmKallax · 24/09/2020 20:10

Also waterproof coats and an umbrella... my secondary age children aren’t going to be allowed inside during breaks at all! My primary age child had already had to have wellies and a waterproof coat to keep in school.

Pepperwort · 24/09/2020 20:11

It’s a solution for now, but shows up the ridiculousness of it all. Thermals won’t help them to hold pencils when their hands are too cold.

vanillandhoney · 24/09/2020 20:14

Nope. There is no legal minimum (or maximum).

doctorhamster · 24/09/2020 20:16

Good idea. My 12 year old says she's been cold all day at school today and they're not allowed to keep their coats on Angry fuck knows how they'll manage in November when it's literally freezing out.

lakeswimmer · 24/09/2020 20:16

DS is at an FE college and came home today saying how cold it was as they have to have the windows open all the time. No sure how he'll be managing in December!

IndecentFeminist · 24/09/2020 20:18

We only can if the doors don't open onto car park or similar...too easily accessed by public.

ginsparkles · 24/09/2020 20:19

Have ordered some for my DD today! She was wearing her coat in class the other day!

GreyishDays · 24/09/2020 20:21

Are thermals much better than an extra T-shirt under their uniform? If so I will get some. My son’s wearing his coat in class already.

nevertrustaherdofcows · 24/09/2020 20:21

Just don't buy from Uniqlo unless you're sure of the size. I bought dd some of their heat-tech tanks/vests, some were the wrong size, wasn't allowed to return them because 'innerwear'.

Ilovefriday · 24/09/2020 20:30

Great idea. My tutor group have been freezing all day but lots of them didn't even have a jumper with them. I have suggested that they all wear white t shirts under their polo shirts. The winter is going to be tough.

nevertrustaherdofcows · 24/09/2020 20:36

Heattech is really brilliant though if you do know your size. Don't know if M&S heatgen measures up to it?

Ratatcat · 24/09/2020 20:40

My 4yo came home looking cold and that child is never cold. Think when they’re all a bit run down they’ll feel it more. We’ve been warned the office is freezing. It’s not an attractive proposition really.

worldweary45 · 24/09/2020 20:45

Ive just bought myself some never mind the children! 😉

According to my classroom thermometer it was 19 degrees -it did not feel it

We are still getting children arriving in polo shirts and no jumper and are having to kit them out from lost property -and these are families that have jumpers but their children apparently 'run hot'
Hmmmm
