Schools will be keeping windows and doors open throughout autumn and winter as per gov guidelines re Covid-19.
Today primary aged children complained it was cold. It’s still September so this is your ‘heads up!’

My DDs school isn't doing this
They should be-unless they've got a different m/better method of ventilation

@Bluewavescrashing

Don’t schools/offices have to close if temp falls below 17 degrees or something?

Ahahaha.

I used to teach in a Victoria, very poorly maintained school. The boiler would regularly break down and we'd be shivering in our coats and gloves. Nine degrees. There is no legal minimum temperature.

Luckily my classroom this year is extremely warm as it's above the school boiler (different, very modern school!)

hmm, not actually quite true.

There is no rule for the kids, but there is a rule for the teachers.

There is a minimum temp for workers, and it is measured at about 1m from the ground.

Our school was FREEEZING one winter, broken heating. The little kids had most if their body below that 1m line, and the rooms were noticeabley warmer at head height than floor height!

The teachers union got it closed due to being too cold for teachers

I've just asked DD9 if it's cold at school and she said it's warm in there. I asked if the windows were open and she said they weren't. I can only assume they're doing a thorough airing at break and dinner times and whacking all the windows and doors open then, because the teachers are all kitted out in visors and they're doing staggered starts and finishes, lunches and breaks etc, so they must be doing something.

Not a legal minimum but a guideline, which gives a lot of wriggle room.

Thermals? Because of an open window?

Is everyone on here crazy? It’s the UK, not Siberia.

I own a nursery. The windows are open all year round. No one has ever complained and I’ve never given it a second thought. I assumed all schools kept windows open as well. What a shock to find out they don’t, and how awful.

TheLetterZ · 25/09/2020 18:42

@EYProvider are you moving around or sitting still? How well insulated is the building?

My room was only 12 degrees, so below the temperature for active work never mind the 16 degree guideline for non-active work! That is cold and it is only going to get colder.

My daughter wore a thermal vest under her top today. She’s been cold and it was bloody freezing today.

Oh, I wonder if this is why my DS has needed his inhaler at school quite a bit in the last few days. His asthma is triggered by cold.

Thankfully we have thermals already!

Echobelly · 25/09/2020 18:50

That's if schools actually stay open...

Mine both have some skiing under layers to start off with at least

Catawaul · 25/09/2020 18:58

M&S is practically sold out of children's thermals. Anyone know if they'll get more in?

whirlwindwallaby · 25/09/2020 19:00

I got some from uniqlo, in a 13 though.

Shaniac · 25/09/2020 19:18

What is it with some people pretending they are so warm and hardy and anyone who feels cold is a chump? Congrats your medal is in the mail.

Also mn has a bizarre notion that the uk doesnt get cold enough to give you hyperthermia or die which is blatently false. Its autumn. Its freezing. Kids cannot concentrate when they are so cold and it weakens their immune system. Its horrendous they have to keep windows and doors open and it absolutely will not prevent them catching covid but will increase their chance of getting ill. Also primark usually does some ok thermals in small adult sizes perfect for teens men and women.

I think they are the same people that can feed 57 guests with one chicken leg & still have enough leftover for a pie

Khajit · 26/09/2020 08:19

I'm fine with it, but I agree that if they have this policy uniform rules should be relaxed to compensate.

recededpronunciation · 26/09/2020 08:44

Yep. Our school wrote to us today to advise extra layers as the temperatures fall for exactly this reason.

Madcats · 26/09/2020 09:22

I am hoping DD's thermals we had for the cancelled ski trip still fit her! Aldi/Mountain Warehouse ones used to be cheap and there probably are quite a few outgrown ones on EBay.

All the kids at DD's secondary appear to be allergic to wearing coats, so there is not much chance of many wearing an extra layer.

They are a sporty school so they will be wearing games kit all day at least twice a week (so it will be socially acceptable to have a base layer on under that).

I am anticipating "thermostat wars" at home (DH's office is kept nice and cosy thanks to the computer monitors and stuff).

I agree. What's wrong with an extra hoodie in their bag if they are getting cold sitting in the classroom? I've bought DS a couple of thermal t-shirts but he may not wear them as he doesn't like how he can't easily take them off like an extra outer layer.
