Schools will be keeping windows and doors open throughout autumn and winter as per gov guidelines re Covid-19.
Today primary aged children complained it was cold. It’s still September so this is your ‘heads up!’

From experience, this style of fingerless mittens are best when you're washing your hands frequently:

www.amazon.co.uk/Pairs-Fingerless-Gloves-Unisex-Cashmere/dp/B07XLHWFFP/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&s=clothing&crid=22POFFLQRMI9S&keywords=wrist+warmers&sprefix=wrist+war%2Cclothing%2C150&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1578229107&sr=1-5

Unhook the thumbs and push the mittens up your wrists to wash hands.

PerkingFaintly · 24/09/2020 20:51

Also, children will probably need a clean pair every day. They get dirty quickly.

newtb · 24/09/2020 20:53

Best heat protection is a silk shirt over a string vest!! Weird but true.

Rachellow · 24/09/2020 20:53

I teach Y2. I was shocked at the amount of children coming in summer dresses/shorts today with not even a cardigan. Had to raid our lost property so they didn't freeze in the playground. Trouble is our uniform is blazers which don't offer the most warmth and means lots of children aren't bringing coats.

lljkk · 24/09/2020 20:54

There is long current thread elsewhere on MN where anyone worried about their cold DC due to open windows are being told off for being absurd snowflakes, claims that there can be no possible harms ever.

MN schizophrenic as ever... Grin

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 24/09/2020 20:58

Newsflash! We were allowed to have the heating on today. But windows and doors open. I need some nice long warm cardigans.

Lindy2 · 24/09/2020 20:59

I'd rather my child needed an extra jumper and that there was a good level of ventilation in the classroom. You do all remember why the windows need to be open don't you?

Benjispruce2 · 24/09/2020 21:02

I suggested to put headteacher that they advise parents now and they didn’t think it necessary. We are so packed in, we have to have fresh air. I will allow them to wear coats but so many are not sent in with coats even when it’s cold and wet.

OP posts:
Benjispruce2 · 24/09/2020 21:05

Absolutely the doors need to be open but many parents haven’t twigged.

mineofuselessinformation · 24/09/2020 21:39

'Many are not sent in with coats' - and older students won't wear them as it's not the thing to do, apparently..... Hmm
I guess they'll figure it out this year!

deflationexasperation · 24/09/2020 21:46

It had a slight almost perceptible nip in the air today and students were demanding windows be closed.
I had been warning and asking them to wear warmer clothing for days. They ignored me and demanded the window be closed.
I don't know how we will get through winter.
Letters or emails or calls need to go to all dp or carers. Get dc into warm clothes..
Layers. Warn them, Windows open no matter what!.

deflationexasperation · 24/09/2020 21:48

Benji sorry didn't see your last post x post.
Absolutely, they need to act now.
It's also not fair on tas who have to fall in with the teacher when maybe the teacher is oblivious to the coughs and sneezes and also wants windows shut... It's not fair.. It needs to be an edict.

It feels so spoilt to me to moan about slight cold in a pandemic. Put warm clothes on!

deflationexasperation · 24/09/2020 21:51

Rachello I lovingly laid out dd winter uniform today, infact I said summer with tights.

She said no winter... When she came home she was in summer?. Dh said she firmly rejected winter at the last minuet and and it was summer. She is also extremely strong on coats and rain coats.

We do provide them we can't physically make her wear them.

Fiddlersgreen · 24/09/2020 23:19

Well I did not know about this at all.
Have just asked my DS and he confirms it’s the case at his secondary school.
I do think the schools need to be emailing and mentioning this to the parents so they can ensure the children have the right clothing/coats

Rosie2000 · 25/09/2020 06:25

Every school has a risk assessment which will include the information about open doors/windows.

NeurotrashWarrior · 25/09/2020 06:28

Very good idea, and as a teacher I'm going to do the same.

Might I recommend funky ear muffs for teacher presents this year...,

NeurotrashWarrior · 25/09/2020 06:38

In an ideal situation, heating would be on and all windows and doors open, especially any up high and in corridors etc.

Heat rises and this would help the through draft (in the absence of gale force winds.)

A lot of Pe is going to be outside too. My son has joined a club that's going to be outside all term and We've been asked to provide spares incase of snow, pouring rain etc.

marmite79 · 25/09/2020 06:39

My son insists on wearing shorts all year but maybe this year he'll change his mind 😫 must buy some trousers, some vests, some tights for Dd (maybe wear them under trousers?) and maybe some thermals? 😬😬😬

Beebityboo · 25/09/2020 06:44

Fire doors were being kept open on DD's secondary last week. No real fence or anyone could just walk in. In understand there needs to be ventilation but I worry about all the other health and safety stuff that is potentially going to get ignored this Winter.

Beebityboo · 25/09/2020 06:44

Oops, typos. Not had my coffee yet!

upsidedownwavylegs · 25/09/2020 06:52

I wouldn’t be able to use a pen or pencil if I was in a room with the windows open in British winter. Can they wear gloves too?!

maverickallthetime · 25/09/2020 06:55

I think the trouble at the moment is it's getting very warm where I am (24 degrees) in the afternoon so the children I teach are dressed for later in the day!

midnightstar66 · 25/09/2020 07:03

Dd who will only wear shorts year round might have to relent this winter. I wear several layers in the modern heated school I work in anyway. I'm not sure I can add another layer 🥶

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 25/09/2020 07:14

That's actually a very good idea - and thermal socks!

Windows absolutely should be open! Having windows open for at least an hour makes a massive difference.

However in some UK schools windows don't open more than a crack, making the rooms real health hazzards. I used to teach secondary school in the UK and the summer I was pregnant with dc1 was sweltering in my 3rd floor classroom and we had ambulances out twice for teenagers who collapsed ... Senior management vetoed fans...

Beks1 · 25/09/2020 07:25

I know this won't be a popular opinion, I understand why and it's fine right now but later in the year it's going to be absolutely freezing. How are they supposed to concentrate with the windows are wide open in those temperatures? I think it's a bit cruel but maybe that's just me
