To think something could be wrong with me?

I cannot bear loud noises...alarms, lawn mowers, motorbikes, ppl talking or laughing loudly. I was in the gym today and a man kept dropping weights that were stacked - I actually felt angry at him!! I can't describe it - it's like loud noise goes right through my soul!! I get really emotionally upset and it impacts my mood. This has been happening for about 5 years. Does anybody else experience this? Is there a name for it?

I think it's called misophonia. I don't have it, but I've seen it mentioned a lot on MN. The sound of other people eating seems to be a particular trigger, but any intrusive noise can be a problem, I think.

Pollaidh · 24/09/2020 18:51

I was going to say sensory issues, but if it only started 5 years ago it may be something else.

Have you had any traumatic experiences? PTSD can manifest as over sensitivity to noise, causing emotional distress, especially unexpected noises like this.

ShirleyPhallus · 24/09/2020 18:52

Misophonia

I have it too, particularly if I can hear 2 lots of similar noise - ie tv and radio on at same time

I get a weird angsty, angry internal feeling too

pooopypants · 24/09/2020 18:53

My DD is very sensitive to noises - lawnmowers, hand dryers, hair dryers, the list is endless. She's always been like that though, would freak out over the vacuum etc

Certain noises hurt my ears though, I've never been able to explain it.

I have misophonia since developing epilepsy as an adult after trauma. The way other people would feel if a horrifically loud noise or nails on a blackboard were right in their ear is how I feel if people lick their fingers or chew with open mouths. It literally makes my body shut down in disgust! It's totally my problem not anyone else's so I have slight coping mechanisms now but if it's the kind of feeling that makes your skin absolutely crawl then it may well be misophonia and can be very specific from person to person. Sympathies, its horrible when it happens!

AnnaSW1 · 24/09/2020 18:54

It's pretty common. Don't worry Smile

This too! My mum will have the TV on and the radio in another room and it makes me want to jump out of my skin it crawls so much. Or if someone tries to properly talk to me while something is playing. It's really horrible and as much as I hate this about myself, the kind of thing I would have dismissed as bullshit until it happened to me after my head trauma and epilepsy. I promise it's a real thing!

Genuinely curious but how do you know whether it’s misophonia or just irritation?

I also loathe eating noises. I’m not bothered really by loud music or industrial noise (cars/machinery). I cannot stand having to listen to other people’s tv noises.

I just assumed I was BU...

thepeopleversuswork · 24/09/2020 18:59

Also hate it when people have two competing source of noise (radio/tv or tv and tablet). It gives me the rage.

ifiwasascent · 24/09/2020 19:00

I have this. People don't believe me because I'm a loud person in my self. But I cannot stand others making noises I get very stressed, my heart beats really fast. It's really really strange

Chaosalloveragain · 24/09/2020 19:05

I have this. It gets worse if I'm stressed or anxious.

I get irrationally angry at the person making the noise. It also seems to affect my hearing.

Two conflicting noises actually make me feel like I'm going to explode.

SummerHouse · 24/09/2020 19:06

I get the weight rage. I want to go rugby tackle those muscle heads and I even fancy my chances with the level of rage I feel.

Chaosalloveragain · 24/09/2020 19:06

If people make sudden loud noises I get so angry. Banging doors or like you describe about the dropping weights.
