Aibu to think the new Sunak scheme is woeful

New scheme is going to make lots of people lose their homes and starve.

Employers to pay 1/3rd of wages is way too high. They will cut viable jobs that will bounce back otherwise.

I'm happy to pay my taxes for all that need it to continue to receive furlough as this scheme will keep people in poverty.

Aibu to think it's a mistep?

You cannot say these industries/businesses will bounce back.

Had this all been a short term blip, fine. It's now not. This is a new way if living. Of working. Tiding businesses over for even a year will do little good when those businesses are just no longer viable in this "new day"

lughnasadh · 24/09/2020 12:21

You'd be happy to pay taxes...your taxes are not enough to pay for your own NHS care, never mind anything else.

There simply aren't going to be enough people paying enough in taxes at this rate.

Furlough costs money we do not have.

DaughterX · 24/09/2020 12:21

If you can link to the full details of it then that'll help people to be informed enough to comment Smile

ChromaBook · 24/09/2020 12:21

What the hell is a "viable" job?

The arts has been thrown to the wolves. It's an utter disgrace. I am shaking with anger.

welshweasel · 24/09/2020 12:22

I think it’s extremely generous and way more than I anticipated.

ChromaBook · 24/09/2020 12:23

I think it’s extremely generous and way more than I anticipated.

Is it now - would you like to tell that to my colleagues and family members who work in salaried arts jobs which will presumably now be considered no longer viable? What do you expect them to do?

CathTurnbull · 24/09/2020 12:24

Yes I’m quite please with that, but am concerned about my friends who work in the arts. There doesn’t seem to be much for our musicians

ChromaBook · 24/09/2020 12:24

Largely because the British public doesn't value the arts, seeing them as the preserve of "posh" people.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/09/2020 12:25

Chroma What would you do for those in the arts? Furlough. Fine. How long?

What if in a year's time we are still living like this? More furlough? For How long?

What if in five years time we are still living like this?

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2020 12:25

Oh I missed it. Will check it out.

I think it’s hard at this point to carry everyone long term, it’s too much financially

GreenGoldRed · 24/09/2020 12:26

@ChromaBook my understanding is viable means there is some work. Maybe not full hours, but some.

The problem is as @lughnasadh says. Sadly, this is not a blip. We all desperately hope we have a vaccine within next 6 months, but not guaranteed. There is not enough money to pay those people whose jobs don’t exist at the moment (and we have no idea when they will).

I sadly agree there will be a lot of job losses.

KenAdams · 24/09/2020 12:27

There's a very fine balance between elongating inevitable redundancies and sending our economy further down the shitter. I don't know what the right answer is, but I also don't think that asking employers to pay a third of wages is too much.

Cocomarine · 24/09/2020 12:29

I think anyone who is knowledgeable enough on economic modelling in a pandemic to comment on the impact, will already have read the original source!

I’m in the “fuck knows what to do for the best” response camp 😕

ChromaBook · 24/09/2020 12:30

What would you do for those in the arts?

No. What would you do? You would just let the arts in this country die and leave hundreds of thousands of people out of work?

Marg33t · 24/09/2020 12:30

It's not 1/3rd. Employers will pay at least 55% and the government will only pay %22

rosie1959 · 24/09/2020 12:33

As far as support goes the Government continues to do as much as it can
Woeful it's totally OTT

Dillydallyingthrough · 24/09/2020 12:34

I have sympathy for those in the arts, but this was more than I was expecting (now we know it's at least for another 6 months).

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/09/2020 12:35

What would you do for those in the arts No. What wouldyoudo? You would just let the arts in this country die and leave hundreds of thousands of people out of work?

You haven't answered my question so why would I answer yours?

LittlePickleHead · 24/09/2020 12:35

@Marg33t a lot of people seem to have missed this point - it's being reported in multiple places that employer pays 33% and gov tops up to 77% but this is not the case?

I must admit I am confused, it seems like the employer will pay 55% of wages for 33% of time working? What is the incentive to the employer? I may be missing the point here though!

ChromaBook · 24/09/2020 12:38

You haven't answered my question so why would I answer yours?

I would raise taxes of high earners (myself included btw) and use those taxes to provide financial support to those in the arts and other industries which apparently aren't "viable".

There. Now what would you do?

welshweasel · 24/09/2020 12:38

Well we don’t have the money as a country to keep everyone on furlough indefinitely. I’m not really sure what everyone expects to happen? It’s shit, lots of people are going to be made redundant, the economy is fucked but people will still expect there to be a health service, education, housing etc.

TheBeatGoesOn · 24/09/2020 12:39

Have I got this wrong?
So an employee on 40 hours only has to work about 13 hours but will get paid their full salary ? Or is it 80% of their salary?

KenAdams · 24/09/2020 12:39

Ah, yes, this image makes it clearer - I misheard.

Aibu to think the new Sunak scheme is woeful
Legallyblondeee · 24/09/2020 12:39

I think the government should be protecting peoples homes as well as propping up the economy. It’s all well and good furlough and topping up peoples earnings but what about those that are getting made redundant. That have no money. Those than can’t get housing benefit because they own their own home. What are these people meant to do.
What about the renters, landlords are now able to apply to the courts for evictions. If landlords are being made redundant and can’t afford their own mortgage they will have no choice but to sell a rental property from under a tenants feet.

Hopefully the image posts this time!
