Lockerbie

theconstantinoplegardener · 23/09/2020 22:41

The Falklands War. I was six and thought war sounded very exciting because my grandfather had fought in WW2 and told me all about his adventures.

Thurmanmurman · 23/09/2020 22:41

Maradona's 'hand of God'. 1986 world cup.

doodlejump1980 · 23/09/2020 22:42

Hillsborough, Piper Alpha disaster, Lockerbie bombing. Horrific stuff.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 23/09/2020 22:42

Winston Churchill's funeral. My dad went into London to joine the crowds lining the streets.

legalseagull · 23/09/2020 22:42

A submarine that sank with survivors onboard. The rescue attempts failed and I remember thinking about those poor men - just waiting to die with no rescue. I must have been a young teen

Comefromaway · 23/09/2020 22:43

Karen Carpenter dying.

FrankiesKnuckle · 23/09/2020 22:43

John Lennon being shot.
I was in my dads car and he had to pull over after we heard it on the radio. I was 6.

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 23/09/2020 22:43

John Craven on Newsround announcing that Rhodesia would now be called Zimbabwe. 79? Also the Iranian embassy siege, but think that was later. I vaguely remember Wimbledon in 76, but mainly because it was all so hot and dry and seemed to last months. I was v small and bored. Wink

BalancingStick · 23/09/2020 22:44

Zeebrugge ferry disaster. I was seven. I remember feeling really moved by the words of Let it Be released as a charity single to fundraise.

ChangedToday · 23/09/2020 22:45

Elvis death
The kidnapping and assassination of Hans-Martin Schleyer (1977) and Aldo Moro (1978?) by the Red Army Fraktion / Red Brigade

Compared to many of you, I feel very old.

I remember Zeebrugge well as that was at a time when I was travelling that route as a student between UK and continent. The ferries were deserted for quite a while...

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 23/09/2020 22:45

When I was about 8 years old, there was a terrible crime committed in a children's ward in our local hospital. I remember seeing the story on the front of all the papers.

pinkpeoniesplease · 23/09/2020 22:48

RaininSummer · 23/09/2020 22:53

The Jeremy Thorpe scandal in 75/76. Boy did we have a giggle at school at the salacious headlines. We were only 12.

maddening · 23/09/2020 22:54

I was born in 1977, I remember Charles and Diana's wedding when I would have been, but mainly just the dress and carriage.

After that zebrugge, the nasa shuttle exploding and piper alpha stick out.

marmitecake · 23/09/2020 22:55

Tightrope walker, Karl Wallenda, falling from a wire between two buildings, ten storeys high. A gust of wind made him lose his balance. I can still recall the news report in 1978 and as an eleven year old being really shocked seeing someone die and it being shown on TV.

Purplemist · 23/09/2020 22:55

The assassination of President Kennedy

Ikeasucks · 23/09/2020 22:56

I was still at school when a little boy (about 7 i think) fell down a well in Italy and was lodged part way down. A desperate rescue was launched. He was there a few days as they tried to dig a shaft next to the well to get him. It was taking too long and and he was fading/slipping so they made a desperate attempt with a dwarf who volunteered to be lowered with handcuffs to reach the boy and handcuff him so they could pull him up. It worked and they were in the process of pulling him up when his hands slipped through the cuffs and he fell further down well - and couldn't be saved. i (and the rest of the world) had been following the story for days. I went to my room and cried and cried - it stayed with me a long time. Also the poor man who risked his life to have the boy slip away from him - how devastating. Must be nearly 40 yrs ago

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 23/09/2020 22:56

The Berlin Wall coming down and Nelson Mandela being released. Not sure which was first
