I think for me it was the 1999 champions league final

Hillsborough.

I remember watching it and thinking all the people climbing were trying to get in and how daft they were. I didn't realise they were desperately trying to escape. That footage knocks me sick to this day.

Also the Lockerbie bomb. All those poor, the footage of the crushed houses.

QuickBrownFoxy · 24/09/2020 03:15

Skylab

Baddit · 24/09/2020 04:19

The London Kings Cross station fire. The footage of smokey fire fighters coming out of the underground still gives me goosebumps. It must have been hellish.

pollyglot · 24/09/2020 04:56

Queen's coronation. I was 3, exactly the same age as Anne. Then she came to NZ - I was sitting on my Dad's shoulders when she drove past and waved straight at me with such a sweet smile. DH remembers the Korean War, and also the hanging of Ruth Ellis.

Death of Elvis.

Straven123 · 24/09/2020 05:13

A dismembered body being found in a car boot. Not sure if we had a tv as it was about 1960, it was front page of The Daily Express.

Itshissister · 24/09/2020 05:14

OJ Simpson trial.

GreekOddess · 24/09/2020 05:26

The death of Elvis.

Lots of snippets from earlier years but never sure if they are from the time or later e.g. I remember watching the Mary Rose raised but have a feeling that must have been a Blue Peter report later as I would have been 3. The clear I remember exactly what I was doing at the time don't stick out until I was 9/10. I remember Lockerbie, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Hilsborough and fall of Berlin Wall very clearly. Herald of Free Enterprise might be the first one I can be sure of being aware of at the time.

First men on the moon

AGoatAteIt · 24/09/2020 06:37

The children who were shot in Dunblane. I just remember being so shocked and so frightened. Within a few days of that happening my own primary school stepped up their security massively (it was shockingly lax to begin with mind you).

the oldest woman in Britain/ the world at the time dying, Mrs Carrie White. I think she was 106.

Skigal86 · 24/09/2020 07:00

I remember watching the fall of the Berlin Wall on the news and my dad trying to explain it to me. I was four and my main memory is about how happy all the people on TV were

Fifthtimelucky · 24/09/2020 07:04

Torrey Canyon oil spill.

I don't remember it actually happening on the day but we were on holiday in Cornwall that Easter (1967) and we weren't allowed on the beaches (whether that was a general restriction or my mother's decision I don't know).

cptartapp · 24/09/2020 07:07

When the passenger plane crashed into the freezihelicopters were trying to drag people out with a tyre on a rope. The few survivors left were too cold to hang on and kept falling back in. Dreadful. Seeing people die in real time.
I was ten.

BlueTitsRock · 24/09/2020 07:07

Chernobyl. I grew up outside Britain in a high fallout area so it really affected us kids - we couldn't play out normally. I was still very little (6) but remember it clearly.

sqirrelfriends · 24/09/2020 07:08

The death of princess Diana.

cptartapp · 24/09/2020 07:08

The Potomac river that should say

Pickypolly · 24/09/2020 07:12

Thatcher becoming prime minister.
First woman prime minister. I felt pride at that. I was a small child.
Little did I know.
Then the miners strikes.
Then I knew.
The Yorkshire ripper I remember vividly too.

News in the 70’s was scary for a little kid.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/09/2020 07:16
