What is the first news story you remember?

I think for me it was the 1999 champions league final

The gulf war. My mums best friends son was in the army and I followed the news as I was worried about him. (We're now married with two kids and have been together 22 years 😁)

Zebrugge ferry disaster, I was about 6 and was contemplating how scary life could be

Elvis' death.

I remember the water shortage in 1976 being on every night - I was 3

Yorkshire ripper. Was at primary school in Leeds. Scared.

Diana's death. I remember hearing about it on the car radio on the way to the Sunday Market, I was only a child but I understood what was happening.

9/11 in 99 followed by Holly and Jessica and also Wendy the Elephant dying at Bristol Zoo both in 2002.

The Lockerbie bombings... dreadful and terrifying. especially as it was so close to Christmas. I was 8 years old at the time and remember it like it was yesterday.

I have vague memories of Charles and diana wedding which was a couple of months before I turned 4.

Coverage of the Iraq war. I don't remember the details but I remember thinking that war was something from 'the olden days' and being terrified our house would be bombed

Very much remember it but was 29 at the time so not first news memory.

9/11. I remember it vividly, all of us sat in the living room watching the news and I was sad as I wanted to watch my disney film but the adults wouldn't let me. We watched the news for hours that day.

Berlin Wall, I was 6 at the time and couldn't understand what the fuss was about.

An article about conjoined twins. I remember seeing it when my mum was reading the paper (most likely The Sun!). I would have only been about 5. The image haunted me for a very long time and I used to imagine them walking around my house! It terrified me.

The first big story would have been poor little Jamie Bolger, or the Fred and Rose West story.
