To think I can wear what the fuck I like at 47

Midlifelights · 23/09/2020 07:31

My (judgmental) mother thinks I ‘shouldn’t’ be wearing dungarees at my hideously old age of 47 🙄 I should also not ever wear a bikini again and should now have transitioned into tankini’s or a one piece. Animal print also apparently not appropriate.

Aibu to think WTF? I feel like I look ok for my age (not that it fucking matters anyway) and that i can wear whatever I want to wear.

I like nice clothes and shock horror I like wearing bikinis too and genuinely give zero fucks what anyone else thinks.

Is it a generational thing? You must transition to m & s stretchy wear by 45?

I'm a Goth and I wear what I like. I have elaborate makeup, when I go out at night I am what I call extremely gothed up. If I go into town during the day to look around etc I will be fairly gothed up. I really do not give a damn. I'm mid 40s and if someone said I should dress differently I would tell them where to go!!! Honestly I don't get all this at a certain age you should cut your hair shorter, wear a different style of clothing, change your makeup etc. Not happening!

Margay · 23/09/2020 12:52

I want some dungarees now.

VallarMorghulis · 23/09/2020 13:13

@Octopus37

I am 45 (nearly 46) and still wear bikinis (including push up ones from Ann Summers), short skirts and dresses, cold should tops etc. I also have turquoise hair, it isn't long but that's just through choice.
I am 54 and also have short turquoise hair Grin

Wear what you like OP! As long as you feel great in what you wear, you'll look great too! And anyway, who cares? Dress for yourself.

SavageBeauty73 · 23/09/2020 13:14

I'm 47 and wearing leopard print trainers today 🤷‍♀️ Fuck em

Craftycorvid · 23/09/2020 13:31

I think that one of the loveliest and most life-enhancing sights is someone fully embracing their style, whatever it is! If you genuinely love beige twin sets and a cauliflower perm, knock yourself out. What is sad is people censoring themselves (and others). My DM used to sneer at women her age who wore make-up. When I replied ‘why not if it makes them feel good’ she’d look nonplussed.

FenellaVelour · 23/09/2020 13:58

I’m in my 40s, I have long blue hair, I will wear whatever I want, which sometimes includes Star Wars dresses or Marvel T-shirts.

AuntMasha · 23/09/2020 14:05

FGS! This is not Tehran or the 1950s (thank god!). Women should wear what the hell they want and whatever they feel comfortable and/or stylish for them. I only joined MN this year and am quite saddened by some of the ageism on here at times. We’re all getting older, even ageists..

TheArtOfStoryTelling · 23/09/2020 14:11

You can wear whatever the fuck you like no matter what age you are.

GlamGiraffe · 23/09/2020 14:21

My DGM is 99 and thinks all the things you have mentioned are nice on "young ones" (she says this when referringcel to my mother who is in her 70s). Im not sure its an age or generational thing. Your mother just has a problem. Yes, ths is a case of a
'Midlifelights mother problem'.
Maybe she is jealous that you are young and good looking and have the guts to know what you like and wear it, or maybe she is so bored she needs to have someone to moan to something about.

Go and buy her a leopard print bikini -she really shouldnt knock it until she tries it!🤣
Carry on as you were. Youre dressing appropriately😊

Tehran was probably more liberal in the 50s than now... but I know what you're saying!
LunaNorth · 23/09/2020 16:24
**@LunaNorth* I’m struggling to envisage this Confused*

Why?

@Midlifelights wear whatever you want to. I can’t understand this obsession with matching clothes rigidly to age or worrying about what is or is not fashionable. If you like something and feel good in it, wear it.
How can you go to the loo in dungarees and keep your tummy covered?

Kolsch · 23/09/2020 16:43

@LunaNorth Why would you want to keep your tummy covered in the loo?

I don’t - a pp’s mum did, upthread, so she wears dungarees. I’m struggling to envisage how that would work.

Kolsch · 23/09/2020 16:59

Sorry @LunaNorth I had missed that comment. 🙂

thedaywewillremeber · 23/09/2020 17:00

100% agree with you doesn’t matter how old you should be able to wear whatever you want.

user1471538283 · 23/09/2020 17:05

I was 36 before I wore a bikini because of the size of my arse. My arse was tiny and I was a curvy size 10. Now I don't care. Age brings confidence and when I remember how my DM dressed at my age she looked ancient. Wear whatever you like!

IntermittentParps · 23/09/2020 17:05

YANBU. I've had short hair since my teens and am looking forward to purposely going long when I feel I'm at the age when handbag-clutchers will be offended by it.
Have worn once piece triathlon-style swimsuits with legs for years, but stay in your bikini if you want to!
And you would have to take my leopard/animal prints off my cold dead back.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2020 17:09

That quote was about tankinis not dungarees.

Lardlizard · 23/09/2020 17:09

Very good Luna ! Maybe op all boils what’s app that to her mum !!

Lardlizard · 23/09/2020 17:09

Should

monkeymonkey2010 · 23/09/2020 17:26

The only time i think people should definitely not be allowed to wear 'whatever they want' is when i see those hideous 'fashion' shows.....

Drogonssmile · 23/09/2020 17:35

My step mum wears dungarees at the age of 67 🤷🏻‍♀️ each to their own. Go for it OP I say! No one else's business.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 23/09/2020 17:50

I get similar.

Wasn't allowed jeans til I was 12. Now wear them all the time, much to her chagrin.

Really wanted a smart trouser suit when I was 18. She said I'd have to get a skirt with it, for 'interviews'.

Tbf she feels she's let herself down if she wears trousers. I'm the complete opposite.

Yellredder · 23/09/2020 17:52

50 and a dungaree wearer here! I know my mother hates what I wear but she knows better than to say anything!

NeedToKnow101 · 23/09/2020 17:54

@LunaNorth

They’re marvellous, thank you, *@NeedToKnow101*.

And yours?

They're good. Thanks for asking Grin
