I'm 52, and generally wear jeans, biker boots, a flowy linen shirt or T shirt, leather jacket, and jewellery that I make myself.
I also have platinum hair, which sometimes gets a temporary pink, or blue, or green layer on the underside. I like dressing like this, although I do scrub up well if I decide to dress up a bit.
Summer time, I wear flowy skirts instead of jeans, and sandals instead of biker boots, but the rest is often the same (except the jacket, I get too hot in the jacket in summer).
My late mum also wore jeans until she died, she wasn't bothered about other people's opinions.
But yes, back in the 80s/90s there were definitely a number of people spouting those ideas about what women should wear and when. I recall challenging someone when I was about 30, asking where those ideas had come from, and why they were so important. They couldn't answer, so I said to them that it was all ridiculous.
Because it is ridiculous. I also think it's sexist and misogynistic, all about putting women in their place. These ideas are also tied up in the idea of being "ladylike", which can also be safely ignored.
