After today's accouncement - planning to ask for remote learning

After these new lockdown restrictions and increase in cases, is anyone planning to not send their kids to schools and ask for remote learning.
After today's announcement I am thinking of doing this.
YIBU - To do this
YANBU - It's fine if works for you and the school

My two had full on teams lessons when we had full (!) lockdown. They were miserable and exhausted from screen time. They are so much happier with their friends at school, the change is huge. Mine are teenagers though.

PopsicleHustler · 22/09/2020 17:17

I am vulnerable and 2 of my children are also classed as vulnerable. Am currently in a lot of pain with a pregnancy hernia and I literally die every day from the school runs. Thank God I work from home. If I could continue teaching then from home I would but I think they are doing really well being in school. .... Just gonna lay it by ear for the mean time. But it is something I would consider.

Margo34 · 22/09/2020 17:23

You've already said you've got Twinkl, well here is the National Curriculum www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum. If you've got the time to remotely educate your child yourself, then do it but don't expect a handhold from the school. Prior to lockdown v1, there's always been the choice to attend school or be home schooled, sounds like you've just decided you don't like that choice and want a different choice that isn't currently feasible.

Rumbletumbleinmytummy · 22/09/2020 17:26

Schools arent far from doing it anyway. Atleast in my area. DD had two lessons about when they start homeschooling again today.

greengreengrass14 · 22/09/2020 17:28

Remote learning will happen anyway if there is a case in the bubble at school.

This is what we are preparing for from one day to the next.

I don't think it is necessary to ask for it,

What you need to do is make sure you have computer, internet, supervision at home etc.

Biting the bullet is not easy, but easier I find than the situation in March because I for one have prepared for it and it is no longer different and difficult territory.

It is going to happen sooner or later, you need to prepare and not ask.
No point. The schools know this.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to think that the attentions of a highly trained professional can be substituted for by a work plan and a parent in their spare time.

Perhaps you’d like to come and check my teeth OP, no reason why you can’t cover the skills of a dentist too?

Coffeeandbeans · 22/09/2020 17:30

Look at the stats first before making decisions.

Codexdivinchi · 22/09/2020 17:37

Just stop with the bloody fear mongering.

Livelovebehappy · 22/09/2020 17:38

What you’re suggesting is home schooling, so of course it’s a decision for you and your DH, and what works for you, so YANBU. What you do won’t affect the schooling of others, as you will be home schooling. Had you said you wished to withdraw them and have teachers accommodate them by schooling them remotely, then my answer would be different, as teachers would not have the resources to split themselves in this way, and it would be unfair to expect them to do so.

Coffeeandbeans · 22/09/2020 17:41

We have to live with this virus. We can’t all shut down for the next months. If you are vulnerable you need to take extra care. But my child needs to go to school for his sanity. His mental health is more at risk than him being seriously ill from Covid.

Bathroom12345 · 22/09/2020 17:44

I really dont think its going to work. And honestly, I dont think its fair on your children. What are you frightened of? Children are the least at risk of this virus

Orangeblossomrose · 22/09/2020 17:45

Many people are whining away here with their POV but fail to realise that several brilliant English secondaries (one thing we are actually world-beating at) are already providing this option for parents who are rightly prioritizing health. The teachers simply switch on the zoom/teams/suite with cam in their class and teach away. It might not be on the front page of the Times / your social media feed but think of some famous English schools for girls and boys, and they are doing this right now !

Howslifenow · 22/09/2020 17:46

From a teacher's perelective do they think the schools are safe to work. If my employer asked me to work in similar conditions I would have been apprehensive and anxious.

OP posts:
beaverbill · 22/09/2020 17:48

Not a chance can teachers facilitate this. If you want to remove your child you must take full responsibility for home education. Plan it. Resource it. Deliver it. Assess it. It’s your choice so your responsibility

Howslifenow · 22/09/2020 17:50

All of you proposing to send kids, are you WFH or going to work.

Seaswims · 22/09/2020 17:56

If your school is run by the local authority you will be fined for taking your child out of school. I know our school will only set home learning for children who are isolating with no exceptions.

SleepingStandingUp · 22/09/2020 18:01

How old is your child op?
If you're planning to educate them with DH in your free time, what will they be doing the rest of the time?

stovetopespresso · 22/09/2020 18:01

yeah op you need to chill

AllWashedOut · 22/09/2020 18:03

Testing was never going to work which is why, I assume, the government never invested in it fully and why they ignored the teaching unions. I was never possible.

That said, I think if children are not in the vulnerable category there is no reason why you wouldn't send your kids to school. The disease is benign in children. Any vulnerable adults including teachers should SI. We have to live with this disease spreading and protect those for whom would be very ill if they contracted it by shielding them.

Margo34 · 22/09/2020 18:05

Safer than working on a covid ward, yet people do that job too.
ohthegoats · 22/09/2020 18:08

Who do you think will be providing the home learning?

My school is already 8 staff down today, no child who is supposed to have 1-1 support had 1-1 support today, so teachers are running around without any support trying to get through the day. Usually working face to face with children from 8.30am - 3pm, without any break from them. After that they have to mark and prep stuff for children who are in class.

We can't wing anything at the moment, the children are still being reminded of behaviour for learning, anxious children, behaviourally challenging children are still in school, we have to be prepared for every second of the day by 8.30 each morning.

I'm working at home now, sending my resources for tomorrow through to the printer. I'll be in work at 7am to sort them out. The printer is in the staff room so we're not allowed in there unless it's our designated time. Can't get anything printed during the day at all.

I don't have time to provide learning for your child. Use Oak National Academcy, and ideally deregister your child so that the school doesn't end up responsible for your child's progress.

ohthegoats · 22/09/2020 18:10

'Simply'.

I don't have a webcam on the computer in my classroom. We spent all the money on soap and green paper towels. And there is no more.

Ceilingfan · 22/09/2020 18:13

I havent voted, because think this is completely down to the individual.

I asked my DC and both want to stay in school, they both have a new appreciation for the importance of school, especially my 11yo who has just gone into y7.

So you do what is good for you and your children.

Sally872 · 22/09/2020 18:13

Of course if your school offers remote learning you could ask to take this option. Don't really see why you want the opinion from people who do not have that option. Huge drip feed.

emilyfrost · 22/09/2020 18:18

Why did you even post, OP? If you’re so sure YANBU?
