Children on scooters- AIBU

I’m really not sure if I’m just fed up of WFH and now everything is irritating me but since last Monday, there have been a group of 5 children scootering past my window for up to 3hours a day, literally just up and down continuously from 9am.

They are scootering up and down the street shouting to each other and it’s driving me (and BigDog) slowly mad

Am I just being unreasonable to expect relative quiet during the day? I really don’t expect silence but this is incredibly annoying especially as my office is right in the window so it’s all I can hear

And no, I cannot move my office, there is nowhere else for me to go

Sounds a bit rubbish for you but it's reasonable noise to expect during daylight hours.

Brunilde · 22/09/2020 11:52

Yeah you're being a bit unreasonable. I can understand why you would be irritated but it's nice they are outside exercising.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 22/09/2020 11:53

Tbh that would drive me mad too.

Shouldn't they be in school?

stealthninjamum · 22/09/2020 11:54

I can understand why it would be irritating but unfortunately it's not unreasonable behaviour.

SalmonEile · 22/09/2020 11:56

@ZeroFuchsGiven I guess if they finish school by 3 they could be playing out til 6 ? Depending on their ages and where OP lives
The dark evenings and changing weather will soon put an end to that

The op said from 9am.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 22/09/2020 11:58

Ok fair enough, it must just be WFH fatigue, I will try and remember that the next time they scoot past

Alexandernevermind · 22/09/2020 11:59

You know YABU. Too many kids spend all their free time indoors in front of screens, it's good that children near you are getting fresh air and exercise.

SalmonEile · 22/09/2020 12:00

@ZeroFuchsGiven Ah my apologies.
I dunno then. Homeschool kids?

Kanaloa · 22/09/2020 12:03

It is annoying but I’m afraid it’s just one of those annoying things you need to put up with. YANBU to think it’s annoying but you would be unreasonable to say anything. I do get it though, the kids opposite me roll their scooters up the pavement followed by a massive rattle and bang as they bump down the pavement. It can be irritating.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 22/09/2020 12:04

@SalmonEile That sounds like my style of Homeschooling.

"Go out and play" Grin

TantrumsAndBalloons · 22/09/2020 12:05

I wasn’t going to say anything to them, I was just wondering if anyone else would find it annoying
Somehow, after school you expect noise and children playing out, it’s must be because it’s during the day when it’s generally quiet

OP posts:
BlackeyedSusan · 22/09/2020 12:06

Yabu but yes it would also drive me batshit

SalmonEile · 22/09/2020 12:07

@ZeroFuchsGiven 3 hour PE lesson hehe

@TantrumsAndBalloons you have my sympathy I lived somewhere there were kids out screaming outside the door all day in the summer it was maddening but they weren’t bad kids or doing anything wrong - just loud , so I couldn’t do anything about it

Banyantree1990 · 22/09/2020 12:10

Kids can’t win! We have a whiny neighbour who’s always banging on about modern kids being lazy, on screens all day, being fat etc reminiscing about all the stuff he got up to as a kid running free in The streets but as soon as a kid is out in our street on a bike or with a ball he’s complaining about the noise. Perhaps he shouldn’t have bought a house next to a primary school was my last suggestion to him...
YABU. Of course children can run around outside and make noise in the daytime.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 22/09/2020 12:10

To be fair I realised in the last couple of months how annoying people actually are on my street 😂
Now I have to see them every day

Banyantree1990 · 22/09/2020 12:10

Give them a break, they’re living through a bloody pandemic, it’s not their fault you’re WFH.

Sunnydaysstillhere · 22/09/2020 12:13

If you can't beat em (as in with a big stick!) joined em op.... Blow the wft cobwebs away!!

SabrinaSalem · 22/09/2020 12:19

Poor you, OP. This would drive me mad too. Made worse because there's nothing you can do about it because of course kids have the right to play outside. It's not their fault, but equally it's not yours.

Can you invest in noise cancelling headphones? Or just earplugs?

TantrumsAndBalloons · 22/09/2020 12:19

I am giving them a break
I haven’t said a word to them
I was wondering if anyone else would find this annoying, I haven’t been stood in my doorway glaring at anyone who dared to make a noise 🙄

OP posts:
Legallyblondeee · 22/09/2020 12:20

Eeeek sounds like you live on my street the kids have been out every day this week zooming up and down and playing. DD included! Fear not OP it’s going to piss it down for about two week now! Enjoy your peace 😁😁

LindaEllen · 22/09/2020 12:42

I mean, there's the obvious question of either a) why they're not in school, or b) why they're not being supervised if they're not yet of school age.

Could you perhaps wear some ear plugs? Or play white noise in your 'office'?

Unfortunately this is likely what daytime noise is generally like - it's just that you're not here normally to notice it, and it's only grating on you because 'home' and 'work' have been mixed, which is not always ideal. I bet it wouldn't annoy you in the slightest if you weren't trying to work.

FWIW I've worked from home through choice since 2012 and yes, sometimes things annoy me too, but I just have to remember that I am home, it is a residential area, not a place of work, and I have to adapt as such.

LindaEllen · 22/09/2020 12:45

For example, I'm working in the garden today as it's quite sunny, and over the weekend next door have placed several wind chimes around their garden. I am ready to break in and shove them up their .. well ..

But if I was sitting outside relaxing, and not working, they wouldn't bother me!

Actually maybe they would, they're SO loud, and four different sounds!! Haha.

awmum2b · 22/09/2020 12:47

Outside my house now appears to be a scooter zone...I absolutely hate repetitive noise and was starting to loose my mind, they were going until 9pm. Felt like a total kill joy when I asked them to move on, which was all very polite and the boys happily obliged. They might not realise that it is annoying someone and takes it being pointed out?

I also found getting my 2 year old a scooter and her going out to join them puts a dampener on their fun ;P (not at 9pm mind!)
Maybe you should get a scooter and go and join them! Good exercise I believe.

Notathomenow · 22/09/2020 12:49

I get what you mean with the rumble of the scooter up and down all day. I am pleased that they are playing outside and get that they are only kids. But that and the slam, slam, slam of the ball against our fence for hours on end can drive me mad too.
