How does York compare to Wimbledon in terms of attitude?

Has anyone lived in both areas? Is York a bit more down to earth?

JoJoSM2 · 22/09/2020 10:34

What’s wrong with attitudes in Wimbledon?

Pootles34 · 22/09/2020 10:36

I've not lived in Wimbledon but York is friendly - a good mix of people, but most people are nice enough.

Hingeandbracket · 22/09/2020 10:36

Christ on a fucking bike.

AriettyHomily · 22/09/2020 10:40

Really? What on earth is wrong with Wimbledon?

Livelovebehappy · 22/09/2020 10:43

Never lived in Wimbledon (but curious to know what sort of attitude Wimbledonians have?). Although I don’t actually live in York, I live near enough to visit regularly, and love it.

contrmary · 22/09/2020 10:45

Not lived in Wimbledon but I've always people in York to be quite pushy and rude. Maybe they're fine with other locals but they loathe outsiders and aren't afraid to show it.

Literally nothing, I haven't said anything bad about Wimbledon

Attitude to what?

I life in Yorkshire Yorkshire so have visited York many times. Also spent quite a bit of time in Wimbledon. I like both.?

Wheytaminute · 22/09/2020 10:59

What happened to my post.. Crikey.
York is cheaper. Has a lot of history and local places of interest.

Wimbledon is pricey to buy property, but easy into central London.

thecognoscenti · 22/09/2020 10:59

It would help I think if you could clarify what you mean by 'attitudes', OP.

Florencex · 22/09/2020 10:59

I lived in Wimbledon for eleven years. I didn’t notice any kind of common attitude and I never felt loathed as an outsider.

JoJoSM2 · 22/09/2020 11:06

You’re clearly implying something. Not sure what, though but keen to find out Smile

This is gold already Grin

Twisique · 22/09/2020 11:09

I assumed that the OP liked the attitudes in Wimbledon and wanted the same in York!

southparkroses · 22/09/2020 11:12

Sorry about my wording, I was distracted.

Just wanted to know how to the two places compare

Eh? I'm not a 'local' but I lived in York for many years and never experienced this?

OP - York is nice. Different bits have a different feel. The centre feels very different to Poppleton, for example. No idea what you mean by 'attitudes' tbh.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2020 11:16

So is York. Google suggests that Wimbledon is about an hour to central London by either public transport or car (surely not, it's about 10 miles), whereas York is just over 2 hours away, but clearly a much faster train, as over 200 miles.

Given that York, being expensive for Yorkshire, but probably dirt cheap cf Wimbledon isn't much longer journey if you're only going occasionally, it might be worth the risk for the considerable saving and avoidance of whatever attitude you might encounter in Wimbledon that the OP implies that she's trying to avoid.

Itsmybirthday19 · 22/09/2020 11:18

Well I live in Wimbledon and we're all bastards.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2020 11:19

Just wanted to know how to the two places compare

According to what metric?

Number of tennis matches per year?
Number of horse races per year?
How much you could rent your house out per week to attendants of the above?
Number of pissed up people who drown in the river each year (hint, York is likely to be way ahead on this measure, unless there's something about Wimbledon that I'm unaware of).

FullTimeYummy · 22/09/2020 11:19

Attitudes to what? Mowing the lawn after lunch on a Sunday? Covid restrictions? Homosexuality?

LunaNorth · 22/09/2020 11:19

There are no Wombles in York.

screamer1 · 22/09/2020 11:20

@LunaNorth 🤣

BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2020 11:20

Well that's it settled then, the OP should stay in Wimbledon. I simply cannot comprehend how anyone survives without the Wombles.

VirginiaWolverine · 22/09/2020 11:21

I live in York but have never lived in Wimbledon, so it's hard to compare. If you tell me what you find the attitude is in Wimbledon, I might be able to be more useful. I don't think there's an overwhelming single attitude to things in York. It depends on where you live, what work you do etc.
